Certain A/V Programs hog disk I/O (clickme)

The thing that gets me is not so much resource usage in memory or cpu time (but more important that memory kB), but how the real time scanning on a antivirus app slows down my computer. With any antivirus program besides maybe AVG and NOD32 with a few exceptions everything from loading control panel icons is slow (not turtle slow, but still slow like a older computer) after using the computer for maybe a couple of hours after a fresh reboot. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but Avast for instance while the new version being light on memory usage takes forever to scan all the icon files or load a file on first load when opening a folder in explorer filled with icons, and just makes anything I/O lag out. Since I keep all my installed apps in 1 folder with a icon view it drives me nuts to sit there and have to wait while the damn real time protection is scanning them when I load it up. I've tried almost all the A/Vs, and avg + nod32 are the only ones that don't take 2 minutes to scan icons or silly stuff like that. If I didn't have this issue, I'd probably be with KAV/Avast. Anyone have similar woes/solution/possible explanation? I really need a explanation about this..it's driving me nuts that I'm the only one who sees this. Thanks in advance, dave.

I am using avast! 4.6 with WinXP SP2 (P4 2.4 GHz) and don't see any unusual lag at all. For example, when I open Windows/system32, it takes about as long to see all the icons as it usually does (maybe two seconds). Windows/Program Files opens instantly for viewing the program icons. It was the same with NOD32. It sounds like something is hanging up on your machine, but I have no idea what it is; any other security apps running?

Yes, it takes a while for an AV to scan all of the files that you are requesting the usage of, some AV take longer than others. Many users don't realize how many files are requested when asking your computer to do even the simplest tasks. If there is one thing that using a pc has taught me the past 6 years, its be patient! If an good AV takes a while to scan every single file then so be it, I don't care; I would rather my pc be slowed down a little by a VERY thorough scanner than speeded up by a scanner doing a half-a$$ed job. I wholeheartedly agree, and I am presnetly using PCCillin Internet Security on my laptop, McAfee Internet Secuirty on my desktop, and Panda Titanium on my office system. ALso I use Norton Systemmworks (is that slow..) on an older system I have... I have KAV 5 but only for on demand... It's really sad, but sometimes one has to forego excellent detection (KAV) just to use the darned machine. (Real Time Basis).

::) Yep, here we go again. I (spouse did it actually) recently installed another memory board to my machine (128MB). I thought I would give AVG 7.0 a try again. Sad to say but this program once again slowed my machine noticeably, thus went back to utilizing AntiVir/PE. I am by no means a tech. expert, but I do know what does and does not function well on my machine, AVG and AVAST both do not function well. I no longer care to find out why either! I now unabashedly utilize what ever program functions well. I still do however knock AntiVir/PE for having in my opinion a lousy down loader capability.

Thanks for the replys guys :). To answer your questions I do have ALOT on this computer with my 80gigs almost full to the brim. I am attaching a html report of my system's installed programs + screen shots of my task manager. I can tell you right off before you ask, that I am 99.99% sure this isnt a conflict with another program like spyware, or 2 programs conflicting that are not compatible together. I am leaning towards my slow 5400 RPM WD, but I'm not jumping to conclusions. Anyone know any tricks for a A/V not to scan icon files or somthing? This is my main concern. I will try out avast again tonight and report back, but I can't get over it. It seems more like my 550 K6-2 now that is is dragged behind by my hard drive. Keep in mine in the screenshots that I am running alot in the backround, and have very minimal things at startup. I reguraly run TUU04', Have diskeeper on a smart schedule and have done every trick in the book to get this running like it should. Thanks, and if I've missed anything (which I probally have) tell me, and I will provide screenshots, etc. Thanks for the response great forum guys I will register soon ;-)
