Create the following key in the registry and change restricted.com to the actual top level domain of the site you want to restrict. This will disable the ability of that website to install software on your computer.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\restricted.com]

Under the sub-key create a new DWORD value called "*" and set it to equal "4".

Restart Internet Explorer for the change to take effect.

Note: This setting can also be applied on a user-by-user basis by modifing the same key under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive.

I would like to create .reg files to do this automatically for web sites known to install Gator and comet cursor and other nasties.
Could someone here possibly tell me how to figure out which sites to include in this list?

I know about this tweak, but would'nt it be much more convenient to enter these sites in the Restricted Zone in Internet Options/Security, and disable everything there?

You might also look into the Hosts file: http://www.smartin-designs.com/hosts_info.htm

Good luck,

Yes, but this is for people who visit my site. One stop solution sort of. Download this .reg file and merge it and you block a list of sites known to install spyware from being able to do it to you.

This one was actually brought to my attention by someone at http://www.winguides.com/forums/ , but I just discovered there's a thread going here as well: http://www.security-pro.co.uk/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=privacysoftware;action=display;num=1015812506

Tony, thank you very much. I knew about IE-Spyad, but never checked it out until now.
Not quite what I intended, but I realize using it would STOP those browser hijackings I've running all over the net fixing.

The specific page for the fix Mike mentioned is here http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1014/.
I use this method myself along with restricting a few others the same way. I prefer it over a large list in my hosts file or restricted zone created by someone else. I use this http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1013/ method to block my kids from downloading anything on their computers.

All the above methods in this thread work excellent depending on preferences.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the registry tweak. *I haven't had the Comet Cursor auto install for quite awhile but I applied the registry block just incase.

Ahmad, great to hear from you again! *;)

Cheers,
