What Do You Think Is The Best Download Manager

I am Curious as to what people here at the site use and think is the best all round download manager. I use Both Internet Download Manager and Flashget but i am curious as to see if there is something better.

I've used Download Accelerator for years (after removing the spyware) and I enjoy it. It allows me to manage what files I have downloaded and set them scheduled to download for later. I'm sure some people would say "Stay Away" from it, but after removing all the extra crap from it, It is a very good program.

You could try Freshdownload (http://www.freshdevices.com/) or Leechget (http://www.leechget.net/en/), both free with no ad/spywarefree. Those two i like + Massdownloader which is good too. Leechget has more option's than Freshdownload, but i somehow like FD more.

I did try LeechGet - it has a problem in that it automatically creates 3 network connections for downloads. Multiple connections can improve download speed in some cases but also consume more server resources and can result in your IP address being banned by some sites (like The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/faq.php#c6)) so it is a feature best used with caution.

GetRight has lots of options and is spyware/adware free (it just nags you to register) so would be a better choice for the advanced user in my view.

I will always bow to P2K but , the problem you suggest is not really a problem at all . Set it to whatever you like . Simple enough . And I believe in Leechget as I use it . I found it to my liking . You can set the number of connections you want, default is 3. with firefox you can choose to use leechget or firefox downloader to download a file with just before the download starts, the choice is yours.

I am using FreshDownload right now, lots of configuring options, for me a critical must have is the ability to set the date/time of the downloaded file to match the date/time on the server.

After reading gerardwil's post and checking out the web site I will be giving rueDownloader a shot. I prefer to use and support open source software anyway.

Actually, I would stay well clear of Download Accelerator Plus because of all the spyware bundled with it (including VX2 variants and Dataminers). :o But other than that, the best one to use in my opinion is Internet Download Accelerator. Good updates, fast download, alerts of errors and non-resumable downloads, choice of speed to suit dial-up/broadband users... :P

I highly recommend this program if you want to download lots of things, or if you want to download particularly large files from the internet. :)

FlashGet is the best download manager and you can confirm it by using version 1.72 build 128 or later of FlashGet.
It has a Batch download feature and a built-in Site Explorer which connot be compared with other download managers.
It also gets date and time from server with each file. It's got a toolbar too.

Although it's not actually a download manager, Shareaza does a good job as one. I used it to download the PCBSD and Ubuntu 5.1 ISO images, 677mb and 617mb respectively. Did this with my old 98 box using dial-up internet service with a one hour connection time limit.

Another advantage of a download manager is the ability to re-download certain files on a regular schedule, at least Star Downloader (http://stardownloader.com/) lets you do this. It can be set to keep the download links when they're finished and just click on "re-download" when you want to update the downloaded file. I use it to update F-Prot for DOS and AntiVir version 6 (don't like version 7) and automatically send the files to the proper folders. Combined with a few simple batch files to unzip the archives, it works almost as well as the updater that comes with most AVs. The ability to set up multiple categories for the downloads and assigning each one a unique destination saves a lot of file sorting later.
Star Downloader also has a "download basket" (actually a normal sized movable icon) that stays on top of your work if desired. You can drag and drop almost anything on it and it downloads it. Works good with most any kind of file, images, music files, PDFs, and other file types that a browser would normally open instead of saving it to disk.
If there is a disadvantage to using a download manager like Star Downloader, it would be that it tries to use all the available banwidth, especially of you use dialup. When I have more than one download running and try to browse the web, it will either badly slow down the browser (Mozilla) or stop it from opening anything at all (IE6). I usually pause the downloads right after it establishes the download links and gets the file info, then resume them later on. IMO, the AV integration feature and a pause button that lets you resume the downloads hours or even days later are more than enough to justify using one.
While a download manager might not be that much of an advantge when you have high speed service, it's a lifesaver if you're on dialup or are stuck with unreliable internet service.

for now, I am using Star Downloader free. I can resume my interrupted download...but there are some site/or programs/files :dry: that do not support resume..and even if it resumes sometimes I got corrupted download even if the file size is complete. Also, there are some programs that couldn't be downloaded using this download manager....but when i just use the built-in firefox downloader it can be downloaded but the problem is if the file is big there's a possibility of interruption and that I cannot resume because it has no resume feature. :P :-[ :wacko:

In conlusion, download manager is very useful if you have slow internet connection, your connection is fast but the file you want to download is very big and that's where the resume function can help where only a donwload manager can provide. 8)

Flashget is the download manager that I like and prefer. Previously it was known as Jetcar upto the version 0.75. I am using the version 1.71. Its resume feature is very powerful so I get the file always. It integrates very well with the Firefox through Flashgot extension and works well too. Other features which I like a lot are:

I have tried Free download manager and star downloader. Leechget gave lot of memory read errors on my two systems. GakeGet proved slow and buggy, though looks beautiful.
I tried FlashGet and liked it most though it seems a bit slow than FDM and LeechGet on dial up( but might be too early to say as i used it just few times).
The biggest thing is that it is easily integrating with Opera that is my default browser, so I am very happy with it so far, however I wil still see how it works in future.

Thanks. Just few days back I found out that I can integrate any download manager in Opera from opera tools. preferences, advanced, downloads, selecting file type and then edit.
And finally also I found out that LeechGet was giving me errors due to GesWall as it can,t run in GesWall. I have written to GesWall support and they promised to add some download managers in next version or so. Untill that I will use Star Downloader free that i integrated manually in my Opera. It runs well in GesWall. With the new version of GesWall, I hope I can use LeechGet. It is so nice taht I wonder how it is free. I am still using it out of GesWall protection and it seems faster.

Every sixth months or so I find myself reinstalling everything on my computer for one reason or another. Each time I do this I try to pick the best applications to install that will keep my computer running flawlessly while using as little RAM as possible (of course, always far from flawless). I make sure I always install

+Adaware SE Personal
+CCleaner
+Google Toolbar & Google Desktop (Desktop, though, has been unreliable crap lately--there's nothing more annoying them clicking on a file it has found to learn it no longer is in that place and Desktop is no help...so back to the tried and proven Win file search...
+Firefox & way too many plugins/addons/whatever--it seems like I need them all, but I don't...
+Internet Explorer because Firefox is to flightly--the same goes for IE
+Download Them All
+Flashget
+Picasa - even though I don't use it as often as Windows Picture & Fax Viewer
+an anti-virus program -- now it's Norton Anti-Virus 2005SE packed conveniently in Google's new Updater - this version doesn't get in the way like most other programs do -- Google Updater saves a lot of time on these complete reinstalls...
+Windows Media Player -- which I've been trying to dump for a more streamlined program like Media Player Classic or VLC Media Player, but just haven't been able to make the leap - I've put so much time into finetuning WMP it's hard to just dump it...
+Spybot Search & Destroy which -always- disappears after running a few times...and it's never really found any spyware for me???
+TuneUp Utilities 200X - great all-in-one cleanup program

And Photoshop & Office 2003 (I installed the beta of 2007 and thought it was crap-I like to know where features are when using these programs-hopefully MS fixed a lot of what I thought were issues. Same goes for Vista--no thanks for now...

Lastly, a Download Manager - which always seems to be a different application each time.

This time around I was using FlashGet to download a trial of Photoshop (329MB). Not too difficult a task. FlashGet slowly (~40 KB/sec) downloaded the whole file then somehow lost the whole thing at 99%. At this point completely over downloading and my current dl manager I set out to find the "best" download manager for my type of computing. I do a lot of things at once--too many, probably--but that's not going to change. So I started downloading and running several dl managers all working on the same file, Photoshop. It was definitely an eye-opener to see which programs could hang and which would hang. All the programs are listed below, best performers for my particular test listed first:

+++ Paraben's Download Manager (120KB/s) - AMAZING SPEED, comparatively. Never heard of it before today, but it's my new dl mgr. It was one of the last programs to start downloading and it was the 1st to finish.
++ Orbit (90KB/s) - this one swiftly and quietly downloaded with no problems. I've never heard of this or Paraben's before today--makes me wonder if there are even faster programs out there? For now I'll stick with these first two and uninstall the rest.
+ Internet Download Manager (70KB/s) - another great program. If I had to complain, I'd say this one goes overkill with "status" windows and other status indicators--like three at once, I think...all different???


+/- Download Them All - couldn't handle the large file--I stopped it several times after restarting with a new download. DTA is really better at downloading a bunch of small files at once. Firefox wouldn't be complete w/o DTA.
+/- FlashGet -lost all 329MB at 99% then stopped at 66% after dl'ing at 40KB/sec. It never finished. It did, however, pop up to download all the other dl mgr's I installed after it... I guess this one's okay it not pushed too hard???


- Free Download Manager - this one kept downloading the wrong file...instead of the exe file, it would download a tiny index file and say, "completed." After a few futile attempts to get it on track, I UNINSTALLED. These things need to be easy...

i tried many download manager and i presently open to try new download manager. i settled down to free download manager. i try the newest version of flashget (v1.81) and i really slow. i can easily recognize the speed because im on dialup. when dialup connection is concern, i really look at the scheduler funtion and/or event funtion. i like free download manager because of this. i yo encountered index.php file. maybe because free download manager not support it. you can use the built-in download manager of browser. i know this is the weakness of free download manager but i hope this will be correct soon.

i try this download manager. its fast.. but this software is not supported in their site. an abandon program. and the download manager is really really like reget deluxe.



i try also wellget and the interface is like flashget 1.73. but the option is not intrusive like flashget. fast also.

I'm really satisfied with GetRight at the moment.

But I think there won't be any differences between them in 1-2 years. There are only slight differences between managers. The situation was completely different 2-3 years ago, as you remember. There were fundamental differences of use and function between managers.

If you have tried all, you can easily notice that GetRight, Flashget and Free Download Manager have almost the same funcitons and the download speed provided by them is almost the same! :D

Orbit Downloader used to be my favorite download manager, but not anymore. It has become somewhat buggy in latest versions, and I ended up uninstalling it completely from my system.

Now, I use the built-in download managers from IE and Firefox. On Firefox, I downloaded some extensions to improve its native download manager capabilities: Download Manager Tweak and DownloadHelper.

To download Torrents, I use uTorrent, and to download from P2P network, I use FrostWire.

Used to be a Download Accelerator maniac back in the day, when i had Dial-Up.
You could never finish a download without resuming.
I still remember i was downloading an Age of Empire II Demo, right after 98% the connection FAILED! OMGGGG
I almost died man!! It took me like 9999 Hours to get there. After that i found Download Accelerator and never had an isue. Now with Cable/ADSL i don't use download managers anymore

Still using Flashget v1.73, never failed me not even one byte. I think after that version the developers have changed. Never liked the newer versions.

The only thing it lacks is the ability to change cookies and post data prior to download. Anyone knows a download manager that has such ability?

JDownloader, really useful for automatically downloading from Rapidshare, Megaupload, and the like.

Other than that, I just use my browsers built-in downloader. Don't really need extra speed that slows down everything else.

Googles Chrome built in download manager is easy and reliable with this days high internet speeds i dont need any extra software add on for downloading

Firefox Integrated Download manager is VERY VERY good, when i download BIG files i always switch to Firefox xD
But i use Chrome every single day since first day beta :D

I'm also starting to like JDownloader a LOT because of it's auto downloading feature!!!

I used to have Internet Download Manager but it was conflicting with another program so I removed it. I haven't noticed any difference with the speed though.

Free Download Manager (Light) is the best I have used.
The torrent download feature isn't all that great but it does work. I prefere to use uTorrent for my .torrent files though.
