:) I have told before that the wildman was a world traveler. My adventures began at the ripe old age of 8. My father was a construction engineer. In approx. 1954 we left Portland Ore. (Grandparents lived there, Dad had proceeded us by about 3 months, an awaited housing accommodations to be completed.) and headed out across the vast ocean for the land of India. Dad helped build an addition to the Tata Steel mill at Jamshedpur. We lived there until approx. mid 1957.
Some time I must tell you about the trip, it is a fine example of Murphy's law.
Thanks

;D Please don't be shy. I know there are many of you who also have interesting stories to tell.
O.K. the trip: The trip to India was the first of many to follow: We were to leave from Portland Ore. and go to San Francisco Cal. (My aunt and uncle lived there). The day we were to leave, Portland was fogged in, needless to say the plane was late (Coming from Seattle Wash.). I being 8 years old gave the air line people fits with my question as to how long before the plane would arrive. Needless to say when it did leave (8 hours late) I was the first to board. We spent the night in San Francisco with my aunt and uncle, and left for the airport with only having had about an hours sleep. The nimrod from dad's office, who took us to the airport didn't know exactly where it was, so we were entering the front door as they were announcing last call. Mom and I did the mad dash routine through the San Francisco airport. The plane to me was huge (propeller job, Pan Am clipper, no jets yet). Off to Hawaii it was. Refueled, and off we were to go (mechanical problem, back to the terminal). Six hours latter we take off for Wake Island. Leave Wake Island and are about an hour out, I lookout the window an remark to my mom that the wing looks like it is on fire. The pilot comes on the speaker and states that we are headed back to Wake Island and we are to remove all sharp objects and place our faces firmly in the seat back in front of us. Fourteen hours latter we leave Wake Island for Tokyo Japan. Arrive in the Tokyo airport as they are announcing last call for our Air India flight. Mom and I do the mad dash through the Tokyo airport. Leave Tokyo and are head for Bannock Thailand. We are about three hours out when the pilot announces that he has been skirting a typhoon and we will be making an unscheduled flue stop on Okinawa. We leave Okinawa and head for Bannock, no problems this stop. It's off from Bannock and on to the last stop Calcutta India. Dad said we circled the airport for half an hour before we landed.
Thanks

A family friend who works for IBM in California with his family often invites my family to go and stay with them for a while in California however my parents always turn him down. Don't know if it is the cost or if he is just too busy at work,

:) Longboard: You are so very correct about India changing one forever. I have never forgot the things I saw. My world travels have taught me things that books and teachers could never have. I consider myself a very lucky man for having had the opportunity to have had these experiences. Those who have been to South East Asia can also attest, that these places will get your attention as well. The people I came in contact with have had an array of tales to tell also, and some of them would make you sit up an pay close attention. All the places I have been, I would try and get to talk with the people, and go where I thought there would be the real flavor of the place. As a child it was easier, once adulthood came along it became more difficult.

When I was very very young - about 6 or 7, I wanted to go to India, I wanted to see the Taj Mahal, the Ganges where I thought everyone lived, (maybe it could be considered they do?), and ride the elephants.
As I got older, read about it, talked to people who had been there, I started thinking maybe I couldn't handle all I had heard and read about - so....
What I would like to ask, if it changes you forever, do you consider that change good or what.... would you say?!?

Well....Looking at my own country outside my colony (I live in India) changed me completely. The Taj Mahal, Ganges etc. are great places, but certain areas are so disgusting I was thinking I should move to Taiwan when I grow up...No really, India has many good things, but lots of bad things too, trust me.
Take me for example...I don't belong to India. I don't like to eat the traditional Indian food, relying more on bread and pizzas instead; and I'm not all good at speaking the Indian languages, and prefer English most of the time; and to my pride am considered one of the best English speakers (and writers) in my school; and sometimes outside of it too.
No really, if you visit India and take a good look around a large area you'll have mixed feelings...

The most interesting places I have visited were Lima, Cuzco and Machu Pichu (sp.?) in Peru and Quito Ecuador. I spent a month in both both countries back in 1979.

:-\ This is hard to put into words. I was all of 8 years old when we arrived in India, and the first city (the one we arrived at) was Calcutta. To his dying day my father swore he did not do it on purpose, but on the first days excursion out of our hotel, we wound up in the "black hole of Calcutta". There are no words in any language to accurately describe this place, take the most poverty stricken place you can think of in the U.S.A. or Europe, and it would look like a billion dollars in comparison. This by the way is where mother Teresa had her mission. India taught me to never linger long at any pity party.
