Hello,

I've been thinking of Trialing Lookn'Stop for the Whole 30 day trial.. Before I install it, I have a couple of questions..

1. Is it XP Compatible? Is it XP Home compatable?

2. Will it stop the automatic checkpoints from working in System Restore? (Sygate did that to me..)

3. In a normal installation, if it is compatable with XP, will it screw anything up in Windows>

4. Is it low on system resouces?

5. Is there a yearly update/upgrade charge?

If I could get these answers I would appreciate it...

In answer to your questions:
1. I use XP Home with no problems (I use the enhanced ruleset.)
2. Cannot answer this one.... I do not use system restore.....
3. I have no conflicts at all with L'n'S and Windows XP Home.
4. On my system it uses 4,040 K......
5. Only upgrade charge for major upgrades.... All minor upgrades are free.... Current version is 2.04 and the way I understand it all upgrades would be free untill version 3.0 would be released at which then there would be a charge.....

I have tried at one time or the other just about every firewall out there. I love L'n'S and problably will never change. Frederic's customer service is excellent and IMHO you will find none better....

Hi Straight Shooter,

Nothing else to add, except for the 2.

System restore may be problematic in some circumstances and I don't think this is specific to one application but global as soon as an application uses drivers.

Consider the following:

1-An application is installed, Registry is updated (for drivers), programs+uninstall info are placed into c:\program files\applicationname, drivers are placed into c:\windows\system32\drivers
2-A checkpoint is created
3-you uninstall the application. Registry is updated, program and uninstall info removed, and drivers removed
4-you remount the checkpoint, registry will come back in a state where drivers were installed but the files are no longer there, so when you will reboot some drivers will be missing

Hi, I am also trialing Look'n'Stop and really like what I see.
I have one question though, I noticed that in the application filtering we cannot fine tune the application's protocols and ports. An example would be, when I allow Kazaa to access the web, it uses all protocols and ports instead of the one port and protocol that it really needs to be functional.

Is there any way that this can be done(allow only certain ports and protocols) or is it in plans for a future release? Thanks

Yes this is not possible right now and yes it is on the ToDo list for a future release.

Anyway, our view is the following: if you don't trust an application no port should be open for this application. If you open only one port (and close some other ones) nothing prevents this application to use this port to perform malicious actions.

Beside that, Internet Filtering rules contains a way to activate a rule only if one application is connected. But when the rule is activated any application can take advantage of the rule, until the
initial application disconnects and the rule deactivated again.

Thanks Frederic, point taken and understood. I just finished testing the software on a lot of the security scan sites mentioned here and passed all with stealth results. Thanks for a great product.
I'll just keep testing it for a couple of more weeks and then I'll take the plunge and purchase it.
