View Full Version : BOClean - time for a name change!

When I first heard mention of BOClean, I always assumed that it was limited to removing the BackOrifice program - only after spending more time at this forum did I find out about its more general trojan removal capabilities. For those new to trojans and other malware, the name probably carries less meaning - seemingly more suggestive of a personal hygiene product. :D
Therefore I would like to suggest that Privacy Software Corporation consider a radical name change. Given the increasingly crowded nature of the anti-trojan market and the ever-growing sophistication of malware, it would seem crucial (from a marketing perspective) to have a name that promotes aggression and effectiveness. As such, possible choices could include TrojanEmasculator, CrackerDecapitator, MalwareMurderer or CyberSlaughter. :)
To go with the new name, the product needs a new logo. A gold disc (http://www.nsclean.com/psc12575.gif) or toy horse (http://www.nsclean.com/newtro.gif) doesn't suit a real killer product - but Cthulhu does:
http://www.riseofcthulhu.altervista.org/index_file/cthulhu.jpg
This sends a clear message to crackers everywhere - trying to attack a BOClean-protected system will lead to gut-wrenching horror, screaming insanity and a truly gruesome end (perhaps ending up in the tender mercies of Shub-Internet (http://www.shub-internet.org/)).
(BTW, if Kevin or Nancy decide not to take up the new logo, please say so since Jimbo1989 is looking for a new avatar (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=57592) so could doubtless make good use of it). ;D

Not at all. I wonder why you'd want to ask that? I'm already official for MWTI.
Have a great day:)

You live in Singapore, might want to consider your view on what is proper is a bit skewed from the rest of the world. ::)
BTW used to live on Lermit Rd. near the Botanical Gardens, Russian Embassy was my next door neighbor, so I do have some perspective on this.

Fellow Creatures,
Either I dreamed it or read it somewhere but I think the next big release may have a new name :-\ I will investigate a little and get back if I find anything for certain. I agree this fine program has gone well beyond it's original namesake.
But....nevertheless BoClean=TrojanDefense ;D ;)

ETA on the release? Details?
Isn't it just the addition of a OD scanner?

Personally I think a downloadable 30 day no strings attached trial version would do alot more to grab peoples attention than logo and name changes
what harm could it do?

Well here in India, the word 'crap' is considered vulgar in my class...nadirah, there are much worse abbreviations than wtf, so don't get heated up on that. While people do use such words, they never mean anything vulgar. So don't take it badly, OK?

-{ Quote: "Personally I think a downloadable 30 day no strings attached trial version would do alot more to grab peoples attention than logo and name changes" }-Your definition and mine are probably different....but I feel their 30 day offer is to be commendable....even if some view it as "strings attached"
BOClean EULA (http://www.nsclean.com/boeula.html)
"If BOClean does not meet your expectations you are entitled to a refund of the total amount submitted if you return the BOClean install disk to the original place of purchase within 30 days."

Not sure but I think this is what I was thinking about.

Unfortunately Merc, that thread you linked to doesn't have any updated info since 11/04.
Doesn't seem to be any updated info floating around about upcoming changes to BOClean.

Yea, Nov. 04 that is the latest info I know of, but that was what I was thinking of.
.....Anti-Malware Kit...that about covers it....works for me ;D

I don't think "Anti-Malware Kit" is a very good name, but it's better than BOClean, which is terrible. Every time I see it, I think "body odor clean". Can't help it... (And no, kids, it's not because I have a body odor problem. :) )

Well, I knew what "BOClean" meant, having been familiar with Back Orifice, but it has always reminded me of "body odor". I think the name just plain sucks... And how do you pronounce it? Is it "bee-oh-clean", or "bock-lean"?

Right, ladies and gents
Those in favor of a name change: drop the vendor an email. IMHO quality from an app is what counts ;)
Anyway: this thread is closed from now on.
regards,
paul
