Hackers - Crackers

Does anyone know exactly why crackers and hackers became practically the same in the eyes of most. Because, the true definition of a hacker is actually someone who explores computer systems and networks, often for vulnerabilities and ways of increasing protections. So, most of wilders could call themself hackers.

Where as crackers are people who try to gain unauthorised access to a computer system....

Why did the two become practically one word?

I wouldn't go so far as to say that the people at Wilders could be remotely considered as Hackers.....

But I can well understand the reasons for some people being considered as Crackers......

I make no distinction between crackers and hackers because both use illegal means to gain access to anothers property. Two fish in the same barrel in my mind.

In the early days of the Internet and Networking, "Hackers" Were people who explored the systems and networks for vulnerabilities and weaknesses. The Definition of a hacker is someone who has indepth knowledge of the inner workings of a system or network. Crackers were people set to "Crack the code" Of getting into a system otherwise protected. The media got wind of a few security breaches in early networks and coined the phrase "The system got hacked by an intruder". That is how hackers got the be in the same category as crackers.

I was reading up on this last night. Apparently the media is largely to blame for the loss of distinction between hackers and crackers.

Well when CartoonBoy was little, he was in a car with CartoonDad. He pointed at some men on a large green paddock with flags on it. They were hitting eggs with sticks. CartoonDad then said " HACKERS "

He got home that day and he opened up the pantry and saw a box with writing he was to young to understandand. He pointed at it, and CartoonMum said " CRACKERS "


That's all I know.

I've been down in my La-bora-tory trying to concoct a way for JB to make some dinero on the Internet. It came to me in a flash. All he has to do is to send all of the threads that he started to Jay Leno or Dave Letterman. It would be nice to see the kid's name up in lights, which reminds me of another thread about filaments and dehags.

I thought: hackers want to get into yiour computer and steal information - and crackers crack app protections and make keygens, etc.

Both ways.. effect is the same...hackers target individuals and crackers target corporates (cracking their app).
