Well, I followed Menorcaman' advice in this thread http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=365582
-{ Quote: "Please do yourself a favour right now and check that TI detects your external USB drive after booting from the rescue CD or floppy. You don't want a nasty surprise come the day TI is used to restore your system partition/drive!!" }-and discovered that I can't maintain a stable boot from CD or floppy! Here's what happens:
1. It loads initially and I get the splash screen.
2. Then the black screen with 'loading please wait . . . '
3. The the graphical image appears
4. But after a few seconds the boot starts over if I don't move my mouse and immediately if I do.
I tried:
1. the quiet apci=off noapic with both the CD and floppy and it didn't make any difference.
2. Then I remembered that I had disabled the startup items but reenabling them made no difference.
3. I seem to be able to recover from within Windows but if I have to do it from boot I'm screwed.
System is Win ME 20GB (single partition) with an USB2 30 GB external (2 partitions) all basic IDE drives.
Using TI8 build 786. Please don't suggest I download the latest build because on 28k dialup that's not going to happen anytime soon.
FWIW, I am able to boot into Knoppix without a problem.
Any suggestions?
