Maintenance tools

What are some good maintenance tools to keep your computer running smoothly.

Right now i'm using: Diskeeper 8,Ace Utilities, Ccleaner, jv16 powertools.

I also use the same programs, except the Diskeeper... I use PerfectDisk...

Use also the Total Uninstall (http://www.martau.com/) to completely remove some programs that left behind some files and registry entries...

I think that only with these tools you can keep your computer running smoothly... ;)

I would use perfect disk, but it's only for Win2000+ or can i get a Win98 version?

I'm thinking about getting Tune-Up utilities... any good?

If you are fine with Diskeeper, stay with it and upgrade to version 9.0...

Tune-Up Utilities is a very good program :)

In my last reply I forgot to mention the Eraser (http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/) to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive, and NTREGOPT (http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/) that is a NT Registry Optimizer, but if you are on a 98 OS you can use the Registry Compactor (http://www.acelogix.com/regcompact.html) ;)

but now I think about it, the best thing to do is doing it manually (reg tweaking) and the plus is: you get to know your machine better. this is how I have done this in some time ago, but it was becoming too time consuming.

the rest was done with eraser, ccleaner, ... ...but tuneup utilities is quite nice too, I like the gui of system mechanic a bit better though.

Hi, if you use XP, turning off the indexing function, remote assistance & system restore will get you more speed, also make sure you've got the page file (virtual ram) optimized, the size depends on how much physical ram you have, generally the max should be no greater that 3 times the physical ram.

Check your start up entries for any that arent necessary, keep the cache's and temp files clean, a good free program is CrapCleaner, or WindowsWasher (paid).

I use a free program called REST2514, it was made for restoring files, but has a secure delete function that overwrites the free space in the hard drive.
