Hello-
On the subject of ending programs such as AV apps.
firewalls ect. before installing other programs,
updates(Sp1), drivers and so on.
I was wondering if anyone used a great littel
program called End it all for this purpose.
I use it often when installing,it's much faster than
using controll/alt/delete,when shutting down
running and background programs.
I know of new users who forget this simple but
important step and don't realise the problems it
can cause(after multiple installs i.e.)
If anyone else uses other programs like this let me
know. Thanks ;D

Hi brotherfreakshow,
have it somewhere on my system, but most of time i end things manually, which need to be ended, although there are people who reboot in safe mode for the same effect (almost).
Did you use it before installing PE?

Hi,
when I installed PE at least I took the safe mode which was the best method.
But this does not work with programs which need the msi (tried it several times -
installation aborted).

Hello-
I believe using End it all is a safe way to close
running and hidden apps. and background processes
without having to go in safe mode.
Your given a choice of closing or killing programs
when you close a program it's just like choosing
close or exit from it's file menu.
End it all sends a message to the program and
gives it 30 seconds to finish up before it closes it.
Using the kill option is like ctl+alt+delete which I
agree should be a last resort(not responding)
Also by default End it all wont kill any background
process. you have to remove it's protection by
selecting remove protection.

Hi brotherfreakshow,
If it works for you that´s fine :)
No reason to change then.
I just wanted to warn you because I have seen some people for whom it led to troubles.

Hello-
I am open for corrections and input on my previous
post if anyone feels I am wrong about the program
End it all.
In theory and pratice it works,as I often use the
program.
I am allways downloading and installing this and
that.
I would like to hear from those with differnt opinions
as I said before I am allways open to learning. ;)

Hello-
Pieter thanks for the info.
I am confused however the writer of that article
said that End it all is the same as control alt delete
but that would be killing the process and not just
closing it right?
The close program gives the program time to finish
up its closing procedures, and wont close if it's
not finished.
unless you use the kill procedure.
your opinion please?

To be honest, I never used version 2 of EndItAll. I know that the first version had to be tampered with in order to give some processes (mostly Windows) more time to close down. But that was under Win95, I think this has improved for sure in later Windows versions and could have been improved in the second version of EndItAll.
Like yourself, I prefer using the safe mode if possible.
In your case, as long as it doesn´t cause problems it is save to assume that processes get a chance to close properly.
You gave the answer yourself: it is the difference between killing and closing a process that counts here.

Hello-
Thanks for the discussion Pieter!
I enjoyed your opinions.
I would also like to state just because End it all has
worked for me, it could give other users problems.
Everyones systems differnt right?

That sure is right. Almost like people, computers become all unique because of the way they are treated and the data they are fed.
I moved your other topic to General Software and services and stay out of it ;)
So the discussion may take a whole new course.

Pieter

On this subject of using Safe Mode, I noticed earlier tonight on the NAV support site that they recommend using Safe Mode to install NAV 2002 but NOT for NAV 2003. Just curious...why would that be? Are there any other instances where using Safe Mode would be undesirable?
I usually shut down other apps first, but it didn't occur to me that using Safe Mode is probably the best bet, especially with so many things running in the background now (e.g. firewall, etc.).

NAV 2003 needs the Windows Installer on NT machines.
Windows Installer does not start in safe mode.
I think that is the main reason. There could be others that I am unaware of.

Pieter
