Asian Quake Floods Kill 11,300

Quake/Tsunami Death Toll Rises
27/12/2004
Simon Gardner
One of the most powerful earthquakes in history has hit Asia, unleashing a tsunami which devastated coastal areas of Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and tourist isles in Thailand, killing more than 11,300 people.

The tsunami, a menacing wall of water, wreaked death, chaos and destruction across southern Asia on Sunday. Up to 10 metres high, the tsunami was triggered by an 8.9 magnitude underwater earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

"It was a terrible sight," Jayaram Jayalalithaa, chief minister of Tamil Nadu state, said after touring areas of India, where 3,000 people were killed. "I could see dead bodies all around and the devastation is of colossal proportions."

Emergency services struggled around the region popular with Western tourists flying east for Christmas sunshine. Some areas were totally unprepared and tourists found their holidays turned into disaster zones while anxious families at home awaited news.

In Sri Lanka, where the death toll reached 3,500, corpses floated in floodwaters, while thousands fled their homes and cars floated out to sea. Idyllic beaches were turned into fields of debris and destruction. Around 750,000 people were displaced.

"I think this is the worst-ever natural disaster in Sri Lanka," N.D. Hettiarachchi, director of the National Disaster Management Centre, said of the effects of the earthquake, the worst for 40 years and the fifth biggest since 1900.

The worst-hit area appeared to be the tourist regions of the south and east where beach hotels were inundated or swept away.

Local media reported landmines sown during Sri Lanka's two decade civil war had been uprooted and spread by floods. Others used the mayhem to loot shops and houses, police said.

In Indonesia, where 4,422 were listed as killed, raging waters dragged villagers out to sea and tore children from their parents' arms.

Wailing relatives gathered around bodies in the south of India. Beaches were littered with submerged cars and wrecked boats. Shanties on the coast of Madras were under water.

"The whole area has been turned into a cemetery," Chellappa, a 55-year-old fisherman in Madras, said. Television pictures showed bodies floating in turbulent, muddy seas.

Nightmare Stories

Tourists had nightmare stories.

French holidaymaker Philippe Gilbert, at a hotel near Tangalle in the south of Sri Lanka, told private channel LCI:

"I've lost my granddaughter in all of this. I was swept away by an absolutely massive wave ... I was lucky enough to get stuck in some trees and was able to hold my breath," he said.

"This is one of the largest earthquakes ever on record. The situation in Sri Lanka is extremely serious," Peter Rees, of the International Federation of the Red Cross in Geneva, told CNN.

"I just couldn't believe what was happening before my eyes," Boree Carlsson said from a hotel near Phuket's Patong beach in Thailand. "As I was standing there, a car actually floated into the lobby and overturned because the current was so strong," said the 45-year-old Swede.

"Nothing like this has ever happened in our country before," said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand where the death toll was 310.

"Death tolls are likely to increase over time," Titon Mitra, emergency response director for the CARE aid agency in Geneva, said. "I'm sure the numbers will go up."

The earthquake of magnitude 8.9 as measured by the U.S. Geological Survey struck at 7:59 a.m. (00.59 a.m. British time) off Sumatra and swung north with tremors into the Andaman islands.

A warning centre such as those used along the Pacific Rim could have saved most of the thousands of people who died, A USGS official said. "And I think this will be a lesson to them," he said, referring to the devastated countries.

Pope John Paul said the tragedy made for a sad Christmas.

Sri Lanka'S Worst Disaster

Sri Lanka appealed to the world for aid, saying that one million people, or 5 percent of its population, were affected. The global Red Cross launched an immediate emergency appeal.

India feared a devastating toll along its southeastern coast. In the state of Tamil Nadu alone, an official said at least 1,705 had been killed. Rescuers were searching for hundreds of missing fishermen and thousands were homeless.

Television footage showed bodies, including young girls, being thrown into trucks in Madras, capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Hundreds fled to higher ground with pots, pans and other meagre possessions. People carried bodies in hessian sacks to hospitals where dozens of dead already lined the corridors.

In Andhra Pradesh, about 400 fishermen were feared missing and 200 Hindu devotees who had gone to the beach for a holy dip in the morning were feared dead.

Almost 500 tourists were stranded on a rock in the sea off India's southernmost tip, witnesses said.

In the Maldives, none of the thousands of foreign visitors holidaying in the beach paradise, was believed to have been killed although some had suffered minor injuries.

In holiday islands off southern Thailand, emergency workers rescued about 70 Thai and foreign divers from the famed Emeral Cave and dozens were evacuated from around other islands. Two Thais were killed at Emeral cave.

Officials said more than 600 tourists and residents were to be evacuated from Ko Phi Phi. The tiny island made famous by the 2000 film "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was flattened.

The Thai government ordered the evacuation of stricken coastal areas, which included popular beach resorts on the islands of Phuket and Krabi. Thousands were injured in Thailand.

Ring Of Fire

Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands, lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire where volcanoes regularly erupt.

The worst affected area was Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, where 3,000 were killed. More than 200 prisoners escaped from a jail when the tsunami knocked down its walls.

The earthquake was the world's biggest since 1964, said Julie Martinez, at the USGS in Golden, Colorado. "It is multiple earthquakes along the same faultline."

The tsunami, meaning "harbour wave" in Japanese, was so powerful it reached across the ocean to smash boats and flood areas along the east African coast.

Fatal lack of a warning system

Monday, December 27, 2004 Posted: 10:24 AM EST (1524 GMT)

DENVER (AP) -- The catastrophic death toll in Asia caused by a massive tsunami might have been reduced had India and Sri Lanka been part of an international warning system designed to warn coastal communities about potentially deadly waves, scientists say.

A 20-day-old baby has been found alive floating on a mattress in her parent's damaged restaurant in northern Malaysia after the region was slammed by tsunami, reports said on Tuesday.

The child, identified as S. Tulasi, was sleeping in a room at the restaurant when the huge waves struck on Sunday in the holiday resort of Penang. The swirling waters swept her parents out of the restaurant.

Luckily, however, they later managed to claw their way back to the badly damaged building.

"Thank God the mattress was floating in about 1.5-metre deep water and my baby was crying," the baby's father, A. Suppiah, told the national news agency Bernama.

But others were not so lucky. Fisherman Zulkifli Mohd Noor, 42, and his wife lost their five children to the tidal waves.

Zulkifli said his family was collecting fish left stranded on the seabed when the sea water was briefly sucked out to sea before coming pounding back in the tidal waves, the Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia reported.

"I did not for one moment think the dead fishes were a sign that a tsunami was going to crash into us just seconds later," he told the paper.

Malaysia's death toll from the tsunami stands at 60, with 100 others

Tsunami casualties airlifted to Singapore hospitals
------------------------------------------------
SINGAPORE : Several casualties of the tsunami that devastated parts of Asia are being airlifted into Singapore for medical attention.

Among them are American and British families who were holidaying at beach resorts when the disaster struck.

The first to be airlifted into Singapore's Gleneagles Hospital on Monday night was a family of four.

The family, believed to be American, was flown in from Krabi, a popular resort near Phuket in Thailand.

On Tuesday afternoon, a woman with an open fracture in the leg, and a British family were airlifted to Singapore on different flights from Phuket.

Both the British man and his son suffered leg fractures, while the British woman had a tear in the rib. - CNA

??? What can one say? Words are inadequate! I submitted a suggestion with CNN last night, because I knew of no where else to submit it. Here it is:

Those poor people had no advance warning, this does not have to be the case in the future. Perhaps they can come up with a flag warning based upon the same idea as with a hurricane warning, and the minute there is an earth quake and the slightest possibility of a tidal wave the flag(S) would be posted.

We are a large group of people, and if we all suggest that something like this be implemented, it could become a reality. I urge all to submit ideas like this to any and everywhere they think it will have an impact. I also agree we need to come together as a world community and provide whatever aid we can, even if it is just a suggestion like this or our prayers.

Thanks

I'll second slammer's suggestion! This is an unprecedented tragedy! I've been praying hard for all the poor souls, living and dead, affected by this disaster. But secondly, I just sent off a major contribution to my favorite international relief organization. A lot of us live in some of the richest nations on earth. The money we've spent on our computers alone would support a family in some of the affected countries for a year or more! It's time for the global community to come together and help those who most need it. So donate money or time or goods or prayer! Please do what you can for these poor souls! The victims of this calamity need all of that!

Within 15-45 minutes of the quake, certain countries in the pacific region knew of the impending Tsunami... why this information wasn't shared, I do not know.
edit: just thought i should mention... this was in the Indian Express [a respected daily in India] delivered to a firiend a couple of hours ago. It's from the centre page in an article about Questions...

Perhaps an advanced warning system will help in the future, however it took barely 2 hrs I think to reach india and less the other regions . Many may have moved perhaps off the beach but many would still not have survived well as many locations are only a few feet above sea level. Even whole atols and islands were over run by the waves completely. The wave travels at excess 500kmh .

CNN has confirmed that the undersea earthquake off Sumatra and the giant waves it triggered killed 80,427 people, and that number is expected to rise.

If some 70 % of those clearly over 2000 missing Scandinavians in that disaster area were deceased, it's enormous catastrophe to the whole Scandinavia. If we can proportion that number to US population, it should be over 20 000 dead during one morning. May God bless that the number of deceased will be as small as possible.

PS. The local number of deceased will still be clearly over 100 000 people.

Best regards,
Firefighter!

Dear Steve,

I'm so very happy that your friend survived this disaster !
I hope she will soon recover !!!!!

===

It was such a "strange" feeling: I had a few days a nice holiday. Every evening when we checked the TV in our hotel-room, we were shocked about this disaster.... :'( :'( :'(

===

Have we already heard news from our friends who live (or were on vacation) in these areas?
I'm sure that I'm forgetting some of them (for which I really do apologize!!!):
Have we heard from Subratam and his girl-friend, from Donna, from others.....
Does anybody know how they are?

please stop giving stats about deaths, towns vanishing....
If you can, please post only survival stories... like the girl who floated ashore on the door of her home to land in the middle of kraits and vipers, but came to be rescued unharmed in the Nicobar Islands... oOr the Hong Kong couple, when the wife floated on a mattress and the husband clung on to a branch, to be reunitd at the relief center.
Remember 9/11, when families were allowed to "grieve in private" and the "dignity of death" was maintained, and not a single body was shown on TV? Letus pay our respects to the deceased now... let us maintain their dignity...

I just saw an unbelieveable story on the news.

A small island, population 60,000, just 60 kms. from the earthquake's epicentre, somehow prepared themselves for impending disaster. When the earthquake hit, the people ran to higher ground immediately, knowing a tsunami would soon follow.

When it was over, 6 people had died....

Hmm... then where were you with your "rights" when 9/11 happened? There was NO news item back then, was there?
No TV crews barging in on the survivors with TV crews sticking cameras in their face... No CNN showing dead bodies... no BBC showing grieving families... No. When asked about this, a BBC exec replied that its necessary to show an endless stream of dead bodies and torn limbs to "convey the magnitude of the disaster"...

The conmen are out already, people have been trying to make money from this incident by pretending to be charities collecting money for the survivers.

I would just like to add on a side note that earlier in the thread No12 suggested a very good idea. The idea was that instead of talking about the dead and getting sad, why not talk about the survivers who live to tell the tale.

This was posted by a member of a small forum I attend . it was posted on the 30 th december . Its uplifting and the initial feelings after the event . It was in a response to a posting from some one who resides in another part of the world who was trying to understand how we deal with such in ourselves .

Hallo all,

I am from Malaysia. One of the affected country. I agree with Sue that disaster do bring out the best in human. Especially in the realm of spirituality.

There is now outpouring of help from everyone to the victims of tsunami. Every layer of society is suddenly aware of their own fragile human lifes. There is so much of outpouring of compassion in the country to the one affected. Charities, foods, clothing etc is pouring in to the victims. Human suffering brings out the compassion in us.

In the news, we heard of father losing sons, mother losing their daughters, grandfather losing their grandchild, husband losing their wife, family wipe out. It is indeed a great tragedy.

Our country had called off the New Year celebration in memory of the dead.

Such tragedy suddenly push you into Now. To let go of excess baggage and realise that life is precious.
tjkeat

I wanted to share this as its from one who is effected and an insight into how when all has been swept from us we have each other .

Greedy banks cave in

Banks and credit card companies today agreed to repay up to ฃ300,000 in profits they have made from the tsunami appeal.

They bowed to pressure after charities accused them of cashing in on public sympathy for victims of the Asian disaster.

The windfall arose because financial institutions charge a fee of up to three per cent on charity donations made by credit card on the phone or internet.

While the industry agreed last week to waive its fees for donations to the main Disasters Emergency Committee collection, it continued to charge individual charities, including Oxfam and the British Red Cross.

Today's climbdown follows urgent talks this morning between banking chiefs and the main aid agencies. Apacs, the industry body representing credit card providers, said: "The charges will be waived."

Stop Sending us Money, French Aid Group Says

PARIS (Reuters) - The medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) urged donors Tuesday to stop sending it money for Asian tsunami victims, saying it had collected enough funds to manage its relief effort there.

In an unusual step, the group's branches in France and Germany said they had 40 million and $27 million respectively, enough to finance emergency medical aid projects they were supporting in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

Their decision surprised other aid groups and drew criticism that it could undercut an unprecedented wave of private giving to provide relief to the region devastated by the Dec. 26 tsunami which has killed at least 150,000 people.

Article from SMH

http://www.smh.com.au/news/Asia-Tsunami/Tsunami-toll-tops-226000/2005/01/20/1106110882305.html

The unofficial death toll from the tsunami hit more than 226,000 yesterday after Indonesia increased its toll to 166,320, adding about 70,000 people previously listed as missing.

The various government agencies' lists of dead now include more than 38,000 dead in Sri Lanka, more than 5300 dead in Thailand and 16,383 deaths in India. There have been 137 deaths recorded in East Africa, 74 killed in each of the Maldives and Malaysia, 59 dead in Burma and two in Bangladesh.

On Tuesday the United Nations listed the number of dead in Indonesia at 165,493. The Indonesian foreign ministry said 92,721 bodies have been buried so far in Aceh, including 1408 yesterday alone.

But there was confusion over the new Indonesian figures with that country's social affairs ministry still putting the toll at 114,978 with about 24,000 missing, according to the Associated Press.

A spokesman for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Dino Djalal, was unable to clear up the confusion. "To be honest we don't have a set number, and we don't think we will ever know the exact tally".

About 3500 bodies were being collected each day in Indonesia.

There has also been confusion over the death toll in Sri Lanka, where the Public Security Ministry has counted 38,195 deaths, 7275 more than the National Disaster Management Centre.

Indonesia's health ministry said 617,159 people were still homeless in northern Sumatra, as aid workers warned that more must be done to get food to remote areas. In Malaysia, the chief of the US Pacific Command, Admiral Thomas Fargo, said American forces could wind down their relief efforts in the next month.

It is true that most of the world has a tendency to "throw" money at a disaster or problem, but, while you are sending money - send your prayers and good thoughts.

Sending thoughts of Strength, Courage, Health, Fortitude and Patience, along with your donation has an energy of it's own. If you believe in Prayer, that's energy, send it!

If the money doesn't get where it should, the Power of your Prayer or Good Wishes WILL go where you want them. All the people who sent money are and were doing it to help, to give strength, to show they care - those feelings can't be "kept" back or hoarded - so, even if you don't send money, send those people the Prayers they are going to need to make it through this time in their life, it will be spent where and how it is needed.

So, maybe, we can't BE there, maybe we can't control the MONEY or the corrupt people - we CAN send our Thoughts, Prayers, Good Wishes to Where and How they will Help and Heal.

You don't even have to believe, it's already been proven, Thoughts Are Energy - so, Send Your Energy!

Let the officials find a bank for that!! :D

8) Just curious, and please do not jump all over me, but just exactly how much have the other so called Muslim countries contributed? It appears as if the Western world are the ones who have once again come to the rescue. I don't know if any one saw it or not, but there was an individual warning a T-shirt with the picture of Osama on it, hate to say it but this is one individual whom I do not care to aid.

Thanks

Well wildman, it is my hope that we better not discuss anything about the Muslims, Osama Bin Laden or anything related to religious things. This thread is for all news about the tsunami disaster only. Please do not make any comments about the clothes different people are wearing.
Regarding that individual wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Osama on it, well, you must be thinking: Hey, this guy is wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Osama! This guy must be a terrorist or one of Osama's loyal sypporters! Better not aid him at all and don't care about him!

Who knows, that guy wearing the t-shirt with Osama's picture on it might not be a bad guy, he might not even be supporting Osama at all.
But, it is very difficult to tell if he's a just a innocent poor little guy wearing a t-shirt with Osama's picture on it, or if he's a terrorist and a loyal supporter of Osama. Yes I myself do think that this guy might be a little suspicious, but perhaps he's just one of those innocent tsunami survivors wandering about. I do not know if this individual is a good or bad guy.

Wildman, whether you want to aid this individual or not, the choice is yours.
Besides, what's so big about that t-shirt with Osama's picture on it?
That t-shirt might be just part of the individual's usual outfits.

;D Nadirah: My young friend, I do not condemn any religion. Just found it remarkable that the other Muslim countries have not provided more for their Muslim brothers. The individual with the Osama t-shirt is an affront to quiet a few people and does not invoke a desire to want and aid him. This is no reflection on the countless others who are in need and deserving of our aid however.

Please forgive the spelling errors, but I am vision impaired. I do try an edit my posts, but mistakes are bound to get through now and then.

Thanks

That Osama t-shirt must be frightening everybody away! No wonder nobody wants to aid that individual.
That Osama t-shirt really gives people the wrong idea. Time for that individual to start changing his clothes. ;D

;D I don't know about frightening, but it sure ticks me off. He needs to burn that shirt and obtain a better wardrobe if possible. How the heck did he get that shirt to begin with? I don't know, but I suspect he is not one of the good guys.

There will be no discussion here on why certain countries are helping or not. Also, anything religious in nature. Please, let's focus on the true nature of the thread, which is to keep people informed on this horrifying disaster and helping where we can.....

No offense intended.

Those huge rents in the earth have to have some kind of reprecussions, don't they?

The toll is likely to keep rising, unfortunately, especially while they are trying to clear up the land for the living. Very sad. :'(

Pictures show final moments of couple killed in tsunami,

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/02/23/tsunami-pics050223.html

Quoted form the article,

"I just picture my parents hugging each other and knowing it would happen and taking pictures. Just in case someone found the camera and it did survive, they'd have something to see.".

This was the last picture taken by the couple,

A shocking revelation just know being realized,

http://www.islam-online.net/English/News/2005-03/26/article04.shtml

It has been reported that in the worst hit areas, 4 times more women died then men. They are also facing terrible sexual abuse in the camps, as many have no male relatives left alive to protect them. :'(

Snowbound,
I must be under the misunderstanding that international military assistance is either not there to prevent widespread issues like this or is very understaffed to the point of being ineffective. :-[ The evil of some of my sex is beyond words >:( >:(

What an absolute nightmare. I guess these things are never dreamt of on the onset of such disasters and clearly the human race continues and never fails to amaze me. What people do to survive is incredible. Truely, there must be some gutless authorities too afraid to stand up and talk. If we can read this story, surely at least one persons eyes are seeing it for what it is. Lets hope this story reaches its destination. The Realist is >:(

It's a terrible "natural" disaster, really. Do you all believe that people should be there when Thailand is doing their clean-up jobs; when they are burying live bodies in mass graves? >:( Can't people be a little more sympathetic and give those scientists and residents of Thailand a well earned break, instead of holidaying in a graveyard? :( It makes me sick that people are holidaying in Thailand after a natural disaster. If everyone falls sick due to some disease, they will be the only ones to blame!!! >:(

Davo. {:No Smiley Face here, for appropriate reasons...:}

P.S. My condolences go out to every person who had perished in the Boxing Day Tsunami and those families and friends who are torn apart by this devastating tragedy. For Troy Broadbridge, who died in this terrible accident, everyone is looking up to you mate. May all my thoughts of this terrible incident lie within Trisha, who was hit hardest with the loss of her husband (Troy), who was a veteran player for the Melbourne Demons. God bless, and Rest In Peace, to all who have died and all who seek help in this untimely situation. :'(

That also took me aback when i first saw images of holidayers frolicking in the ocean while only some distance away mass graves were being dug with grieving families everywhere. ???

Just goes to show the mentality of some people who seem oblivious to the monumental suffering that is going on around them.....
