View Full Version : How to scan e-mails ?

Hello,

I was wondering if it's possible to scan 'individual' emails, like in Outlook Express and Webmail ?
I run Avast!...and you know when you want to scan certain files - e.g.
gifs, pictures and the like, you right-click and select "scan"..........

Well, I'm a dum dum and tried this with scanning emails, but by right-clicking,
no such option appears.
Tried to find the Outlook folder but I could not find it. ???

Could someone please tell me if and how to scan emails ~ preferably before
opening ?

Thank's a bunch !

Hello Nat68

Right Click the 'a' Avast icon in your system tray
A screen with 'Internet Mail' will appear
On left hand side of screen (you may have to scroll) Left click 'Internet Mail'
On right hand side of screen Left click 'Customize'
In tab marked 'POP' tick 'Scan Inbound mail'
If required tick 'Insert note into clean messages' Left click 'OK'
In tab marked 'SMTP' tick 'Scan Outbound mail'
If required tick 'Insert note into clean messages' Left click 'OK'
Then close that screen

This will put a note on all of your e-mails if you require that.

Regards

Rosie

Hello Rosie, :)

I have done all these settings. And thank you much for posting this. I double checked and they are all still the same as you described.

Hi Nat

Does that mean that it all works ok now?

You should see an 'avast' icon appear in the task bar of Outlook Express when you 'Send and Receive' mail

Rosie

Actually I should have rephrased my post. Of course the AV scans in-and outgoing mails automatically. I was just wondering if one could also do so
as an "extra" task, so to say. Like a double-check, if you can understand what I mean.

Well..my settings in AVAST! are all set up and running smoothly...mails are scanned - with conformation message :) ........but I suppose you cannot scan them individually.

Alrighty then.
Thank's ! :) :)

Yes Rosie...it works all fine.
Please see my other post. Because I think I should have explained a bit better what I really meant. :-[ ;D

Hi Nat,

I see what you mean now, I don't know if you can re-scan e-mails individually, as they have already been individually scanned, when they are received.

However, you may like to check this out on the Avast Support Forum at

http://forum.avast.com/

Best of luck

Rosie

Hi,

First of all:
I don't have Avast so I cannot tell you much about it.

More in general:
Are there scanners that can scan Outlook Express emails on-demand (meaning: when you do a full system scan for example)?
Not all AV's can do that.
I know at least one that can do it: KAV Pers Pro 4.xx

Cheers, Jan.

And that confirms what a "retard" I really am *lol*.
I have no idea what made me think one could re-scan if it's already scanned. ::)

Sometimes my mind is racing in all different directions and trips occasionally at the same time. Haha.
Oh well.....I will read the forum as soon as I've got the time.:P

Thank You Rosie ! :)

Hi Nat,

Maybe not rescan individual emails....but I think you spoke of having "scan for viruses" as an available option in
windows explorer context menu...yes? Here's a program Rezjor (security member and software author ;) )
designed to extend avast! Antivirus functionality.....

avast! External Control 1.6 (http://www.excessive-software.tk/).......NO install, just extract and run! 8)

You could create both a download folder on you desktop by right clicking and select "new folder" (call it what you like) to download the zip.file, then navigate - start/all programs/accessories/windows explorer then close the "My Documents"
tree and open "My Computer"/Local Disc "C" - and highlight "Program Files"....leave it highlighted....go to - file/new
and click "folder" and name it "External Control".

Now back on your desktop, double-click the folder you downloaded the zip.file to and double click Rezjor's program....
on the left you'll see "extract all files"....click that and the window will ask you "where" you'd like to extract those
files/file to - select "Browse" and navigate to the folder you created on C:\Program Files\External Control, highlight
to select and click "extract"....close to finish. At this point to make life easy you can "right click" the executable
and select "Pin to Start menu"....then just open it and investigate. 8)

Here you'll find additional avast! User FAQ'S (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=4818.0).

I personally don't run avast! but this sure looks versatile....give it a whirl! ;)

PS - This is what you question in context menu, yes...?

There is a programme ( I use ) called Benign. http://www.firetrust.com/products/benign/
It allows you to see just what has been taken out of each email . It scans all incoming for viruses, worms, scripts, web bugs, privacy threats and other security risks, without affecting your email. . Its a one off payment licence .. there is a free download trial.

another product by the same peoples is called Mailwasher http://www.mailwasher.net/

Thank's GF and SC ! :)

@SC: Your program sounds like a great one. Though I couldn't buy it right now. :'(

@GF: And for Your suggestions, I'll have to get Winzip for it first.

My To Do List gets longer and longer.........:P

Not needed Natascha, XP will take care "precisely" as I described.... ;) -{ Quote: ""I'll have to get Winzip for it first."" }- Extract all "copies" the files inside the zip to the directory folder you specify.

Your welcome Nat. Just follow the prompts and you'll shorten that "to do" list considerably. ;D
