View Full Version : 1.3.03 update kills Spy Blaster

I just installed the 1.3.03 update on Spyblaster 2.01 on W98SE box and now the list has disappeared and the program is unusable. There are at least two others with XP and ME at DSLR security forum with the same problem! What's going on here???

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,5586052~root=security,1~mode=flat#5586122

I don't know if this is significant, but I already had the update. I got it on Jan 3. Tonite, a friend emailed me and said there was an update. So, I opened Spyblaster and clicked on update. The list was there at that point. It took forever to update (usually is very fast on cable modem) and while it was, I remembered I already the 1/3 update. Anyhow, it finally finished, but didn't show anything added. I closed the program and thought no more about it until my friend emailed me and said the update killed his Spy Blaster. So, I opened Spy Blaster again and found no list! Perhaps something has happened since I first got the download on the third as the download then was ok.

Edited to say that my friend (who started the DSLR thread on this) just told me that he too got the runtime 9 error on his ME box. I did not get this error on W98SE.

Heres a screen shot of what happens. This happened to me after running live update. Nothing downloaded, and a runtime 9 error shows up, in a error window. Hope that info helps.

I'm kind of curious about this myself now because I know I checked yesterday, 1/7/03, and there was no update. Now, on 1/8/03, there is an updated listed there for 1/3/03, and given what these others are saying, I'm reluctant to download that update so as not to trash the program's ability to work. What's up, Javacool?

Only as extra info for javacool, no problems on my win2k box.

Ladies and Gents,

Apologies - something has gone wrong when uploading the files to our server :-[. All is well now. Please uninstall - and reinstall the software, and update after doing so.

regards.

I'm not so sure it is fixed. I just uninstalled and reinstalled Spyware Blaster. I then hit update and saw an upgrade to the current version and the 1.03.03 update. I chose only the upgrade. However, I got both the upgrade and the update! I then hit update button again and there was that nasty 1.03.03 update saying I needed it! I didn't touch it! Because this is what happened before. I already had the update, updated again when I saw it there and that killed the program.

So, if this is fixed then why do I see that update sitting there telling me I need it? I'm showing that the 1.03.03 update is already installed, but it tells me I need it...just like before. So, I'm not convinced it is fixed. I'm tired so I don't want to mess with it further as it is now 3AM, but I think if I click on that update that is waiting, I will again kill Spyware Blaster.

Mine's good, too (had to do a restore a few days ago and it wiped out the update - just checked it and got them again and it worked fine). Pete

Just checking in to say mine is working too. Because I never tried to d/l the updates while there was the problem, I was able to just d/l them now w/o having to uninstall/reinstall. And yes, it does say 1/3/02, instead of 1/3/03, but it changed from 75 to 78 and I'm sure it's the right one.

Yes, it is the right definition file - the year will be corrected in the next update (hopefully in 24 hours or less). :)

(I'm sorry, I can't see how to add a second attachment to the post). Guess I need to go read up on posting here! :) Don't have time now so here is what I also see and I feel sure that if I click on this update it will kill Spyware Blaster again. I uninstalled and reinstalled AFTER the problem was fixed. So, do I have a different problem? I never got the runtime 9 error that others got.

Hi Mele20,

Looking at your screen-shots, you downloaded the update of definitions, but did not get the info about them.
So, at the moment you do have full protection, and that will not change even if Spywareblaster crashes again.
Of course it´s up to you if you want to try and get the info as well, but I see no harm in trying.

Regards,

Pieter

The definitions info update simply updates the information in the "More Info" section in SpywareBlaster v2.0 and up. In your case, it seems as though you did not get this update, but got the original definitions update, so just go ahead and download it. :)

And this update will not kill SpywareBlaster - that issue has been fixed. ;D

(BTW, in the future if the database somehow gets deleted - possibly through an external malicious program that might want to target SpywareBlaster - you do not need to uninstall and reinstall. Just download the latest updates. In this case, the problem was with the update files on the server, but you could have simply run the updater after the problem was fixed and it would have successfully downloaded them.)

Best regards,

Thank you, Javacool. I've been gone all day. Just got home, did what you said and everything is cool. :) I love Spyware Blaster. I also appreciate the tip that it not necessary to uninstall and reinstall the program if the database were to disappear due to a malicious program targeting it, etc. That is good to know.

The particular issue in this thread has been resolved - it sounds to me like you may not have the latest version of the MSINET.OCX file. If you follow the instructions here for only the MSINET.OCX file, it should install a newer version: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=5169

Let me know if that does not fix the issue (it is also possible a firewall is causing a conflict with the update process).

You can also manually download the definitions for now from:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/sbdatabase/sbdatabase.dtb
and
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/sbinfo/sbinfo.dtb
But I would greatly appreciate if you could try the method mentioned above before doing so. :)

Hi Javacool,
Thanks for your quick reply.
I downloaded what you said to download, turned the machine off walked away came back and checked for updates again before I installed MSINET.OCX. And it worked this time, no troubles like I was getting before. I didn't have to update MSINET.OCX.
I now have Database Info: Date: 1/9/03 Items: 79
Thanks for your time and the info.
