Beat and Destroy the Spam: SpamPal

Spam is an evil that is concerning everybody (I think).

I have tried so many Anti Spam Programs, expensive shareware and free/donationware, none of all these programs was doing the job well.

This week I have tested SpamPal v1.10 and the results are amazing!

To get a lot of Spam I have surfed on all possible "Spam-dangerous" websites, like porno and warez-sites, especially these sites are those one who surprises us after the visits with tons of Spam.

The predictable results: lots of Spam!

SpamPal filtered ALL Spam, never seen before an Anti Spam Program who did the job like SpamPal, 100% filtering without even 1 false positive....

Whow!!!!!!

My personal rating of SpamPal on a scale from 1 to 10: 10+

The best of all: SpamPal is free/donationware.

There is also a new, very promising plugin available vor SpamPal: the "Bayesian" plugin.
It is a very new plugin currently undergoing development, which uses the new but increasingly popular tactic called Bayesian filtering to detect spam.

I have tried a combination of the bayesian filter and using spampal (which uses blacklists).

I found that using spampal added little improvement to bayesian filtering.

Bayesian filtering appears to be the future. Everyone from Mozilla, to Microsoft (who actually hold a patent for this!),spam assisin and various projects are starting to use that..

My personal opinion is that SpamPal don't really need the bayesian filter technique at this moment because it is already doing the job extreme well.
But because Spam & Co. are not sleeping bayesian flitering might be in the futere a solution to fight the Spam, that is f.e. the reason I use SpamPal together with the (beta)bayesian filter plugin.

For spam I usually use Mailwasher with Cloudmarks Spamnet as a back up, I also use NOD32's pop3 antivirus scan on my six accounts, this requires setting up different ports & is a bit of a pain -

Today I found another little free tool for Outook users that does not require any additional mucking about & appears so far to work fine in conjunction with Spamnet adding Bayesian functionallity to spam trapping.

I have take a fast look on Spammunition, but IMO it is not as far destroying Spam in the way SpamPal does.

Biggest limitation is that it only works with Outlook, SpamPal works together with:

Mail Warrior
Mozilla / Netscape 7
Netscape Communicator 4
Opera
Outlook
Outlook Express
Pegasus Mail

Besides that, Spammunition fully depends on bayesian filtering which is still a BETA technique, SpamPal uses excisting blacklists who are updateble, SpamPal CAN use an bayesian filtering plugin for extra security but is not fully depending of it.

I know everybody have his favorite program, I have no doubt that a lot of people are satisfied with Spammunition, but IMO SpamPal is a more allrounder with a lot of promises for the future like:

-Support for IMAP4 mailboxes.
-Support for more secure POP3 authentication methods, e.g. SASL (aka Secure Password Authentication in Outlook).
-Setup Wizards to take the pain out of configuring your mail client for SpamPal.
-Checking incoming mail against the spam catalogue in Vipul's Razor.
-Support for SMTP.
-Making SpamPal run as an NT service.

Hello Smokey, Thanks for the welcome.

My possible problem with Spampal is setting it up as I have the NOD32 pop AV in line this is set as follows:
Incoming mail server 127.0.0.1 for all accounts & The SMTP servers relevant o the various accounts. in the advanced configuration I set the incoming Pop3 ports to say 7500, 7501 etc for the relevant servers In Nod 32 I redirect these ports to the account Such as 7500 to pop.myaccont.com, 7501 to pop.myrealbox.com.

When reading the set up for Spampal I cannot see how to install it in this setup. Probably me as I am non-techy :-[ I would love to try, maybe I'll take another look but any advice would be welcome.

BTW I have used Outlook proper for years - business & home so I am kinda attached to it, though I do use other email progs as a backup & for interest.

I wish I can help you, but because I never used Nod32 it is for me difficult to give the right solution.

When you can't find the solution in the links above, try the official SpamPal forum http://www.spampal.org.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl , I am sure they can and will give you the right configuration for SpamPal in conjunction with Nod32.

Thank you for providing the info on SpamPal. I have been looking for a product like this. I am using it with four e-mail programs I am testing: the bat!, Becky2, Pegasus 4.2 and Calypso. It is working great on all four. Currently, I am also trying the bayesian plug-in and am getting ready to try the url plug-in. I used to use Mailwasher, but frankly this is a superior product. I am not having any problems with false positives and have not lost any legitimate mail.

I would be interested in your opinions of the Email client tests.
I use Outlook (proper) mainly for historical reasons but am always on the look out for new possibly better clients.
Not interested in their news capabilities as I use Gravity - After trying many other News clients Gravity is still the best IMHO. ;D

Glad to hear you are satisfied with SpamPal! ;D
One of the biggest advantages is, that it works with so many email-progs together.

Without the bayesian filter SpamPal is already doing a great job like you noticed, and with the plugin options (bayesian, url, word) it is unbeatable ;)

Positive reactions just like yours is the best advertisement for SpamPal! :D

For all the girls and guys who are thinking I have stocks in SpamPal because I'm so lyric about it: the program is freeware. :)
