Ok I want to buy myself a radar detector and I've heard a lot of positive things about Escort XRS-9xxx series and they INTELLIMUTE technology wich reduces false alerts by monitoring the RPM of your car.
What I wonder is whether I should purchase the OLD Escort 8500 Model (the 2001) or the new Cobra XRS-9300. I wonder which is has a greater sensitivity, greater range and greater accuracy. I know that the original Escort 8500 does false a lot since my friend has it so the people who say that Escort 8500 is false alarm free are lying.
So now the question is:
Is Escort 8500 better then Cobra XRS-9300 when it comes to detection, range and falsing or is Cobra XRS-9300 equal to Escort 8500.
And I am talkinga bout the vanilla Escort 8500 not the new X50 model. Since what I will be buying is the Escort 8500 Vanilla and not X50. My friend wants to sell me the Escort 8500 for $150 so I have to choose between Cobra XRS-9300 for $70.0 or the Escort 8500 for $150. Is the extra $80 really worth it when it comes to Escort 8500?

Also does the cobra INtellimute actually works? Does it effect the range?

Hi,

I have had the 8500 x50 (duh) for about 6 Mos. Very satisfied. Have had quite a few different makes and models in my traveling days and find this one to be the best. I can pick up Local Cops using KA at least 1 to 2 miles away. There are a few things that I do not care to skimp on and this is one of them. I use mine as a tool not as a savior. Mostly for the places where they hide to catch you doing 35 in a 25 zone. I did a few comparison checks between diff. units (independent testers) and found this one to be the best. Don't remember the sites. I googled for them. I could have gotten the 8500 (bare) pretty cheap also but figured the extra $ was worth it. On a recent trip on the NY Thruway doing 75 in a 65 zone I easily avoided 8 hits in less than 80 miles.

Know you didn't want to hear about the x50 but I'm telling you anyways.

Drive on, big ed

Hey bigc,

I guess I should have known better. It's kinda like recommending a pickup truck. Chevy, Ford Or Dodge. What was I thinking? :)

Sorry,

I got the 8500 for $170 but then I sold it on Ebay for $190.0 and Got the BEL RX65 Professional Series for $210. :)
REason why I got Bel RX65 is because:
1) Escort and BEL are now the same
2)RX65 has all the inards of X50 PLUS KU band and Discreate KA scan which allows it to react faster.
3)Has VOICE alerts and SWS voice alerts. It's kind of cool since sometimes a beeping sound from a radar might get ingnored (long trips) but a beeping sound along with a voice is more noticable.
4) As sensitive as X50 and I could not find X50 for that price.
5) Has POP alert which original 8500 did not.

NOw I also discovered that it can do KA US and KA INternational I really don't know what's the difference, it comes on default with KA set to international.

Ok we need a HUGE DROOL ICON!

Shoot, that is a great car. :o

The cops would be the last of my worries. If I could afford that car and the fuel for it I could afford a ticket or two. :)

Now I am trying my best to figure out what the hell is this KA international and KA USA and why did it come preconfigured with KA international. :) IF anyone just decided to take it up and use it I guess KA will be one band that would not be detected while he or she was driving in the USA.

Ok btw great timming with the bump on the thread since I just got my RX65 today and still had no time to test it out. Just been fooling around with the programming.

So do they use pop there or not yet?
What band is mostly used? K?
I know that most of NE uses K, where some state cops use KA.
X is used in NJ, and now they got a state approved K band.
Laser is used mostly in MA highways and NJ highways.

Reading this thread reminded me of "The FZATmobile" letter in Dan's Data letters #95 (http://www.dansdata.com/danletters095.htm) (two-thirds of the way down). Well worth a chuckle... :)

They use several bands on the radar, and laser close to the larger cities. personally I don't use a detector anymore. I don't drive over 75/80 and we can get away with that. ;)
