View Full Version : C & D disks running "unusually slow"..

Hello, I am trying to fix what continues to come up as a "red" problem area on this PC when I do an on-line scan at PCPitstop. (The only thing showing in red is that "...drives C & D are running unusually slow".)

I have not found the cause for this. However, in doing my regular cleaning last night, I discovered something new in the "disk cleanup". There was a "more options" tab. When clicked, it produced a window having 4-5 buttons, each of which would permit me to delete unused and/or obsolete programs. (Since I had already cleaned the PC up via ADD/REMOVE, I saw no reason to use any of these buttons.) The last button showed me that, in "System Restore...Hard Disk" tab, the "System Restore disk space use" is set at 587 MB max.

My question here is: What does this "587 MB max" mean? Could this be what is causing "C & D drives to be unusually slow"?

I am running WinME with IE6; have 320 RAM and a dial-up 56K modem.

(1) Click Start
(2) Click Programs
(3) Accessories
(4) System Tools
(5) Click on System Restore
(6) Click Settings for System Restore

I have it set for the active partition of the HD only and at 3% (569 MB)
But then again, I always got the same warning you do.
Is your HD 5400 rpm too?

Regards,

Pieter

Hello,

If you don't use it, you might disable the system restore.

A Defrag before the test should also help.

Try these tweaks :

-click on system files\Fixing and tick "unactivate synchrone buffer validation. OK And reboot

-Check your disk are activated DMA.

- Edit the files Mshdc.inf an Diskdrv.inf located in \Windows\inf.
(make a copy before in case you make a mistake)

In Mshdc.inf, loolk for the line [ESDI_Addreg]
and add this four lines below (copy/paste no mistake !):
HKR,,IDEDMADrive0,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive1,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive2,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive3,3,01

In Diskdrv.inf, look for the line [DiskReg]
and add this four lines below :
HKR,,IDEDMADrive0,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive1,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive2,3,01
HKR,,IDEDMADrive3,3,01

Safe and close.
Go to the peripherics manager\Drives and suppress your
HDDs. Reboot. The new drives will be installed.

- open REGEDIT
Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
New Dword value DWORD name ContigFileAllocSize
Valeur 200 (Hex)
Reboot and now run the test again.

Sorry my OS in not in English, tranlated literally.

Sorry,
I do realize you are all trying to help; but I cannot make any sense out of what you're telling me to do.

Pieter, doing what you suggested does not bring up the information window you described.

Jac, I don't understand any of your post. It is too technical for me. Sorry.

Sorry, my English is not that good when it's a bit technical. :'(

Should help if you could apply.

Hey Mot

I found a site for you, I do not run win ME myself so I can´t help too intensive....but

I hope you can do it .....read every word and go taking a look at the contents/ settings.....before you make a move.

Here Mot, more of win ME tweaks, some of them might be same as above

http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html

It is recommended to back up your registry first. And Virtual memory should be tweaked right way.

go for it ;) TRY THIS FIRST, it´s more clear
