Yet another poll. I'm curious abt the number of people who actually use dedicated (one function or main function) pop up killers.

I figure using Adshield (http://www.adshield.org) and a hosts file counts as a combination? ;)

Popups, for me, are one of the most annoying things on the Internet, so I've compiled a little list to help others:
Some popup blockers.
All of these are 100% pure freeware, no trial periods. Some of these
do more than just handle popups.

That's the problem with this type of polls (beyond the fact that there are more alternatives than I can list options), almost everyone "uses a combination".
Do Host files actually prevent the popup?
I was under the impression it would pop up, but would display a broken unloaded page..
I'm not sure I would want to download and use something specific to just kill popup though..
Adshield is nice (i've used it), but I don't think it's main function is to kill popups. Banner replacement and killing is another poll.. :)

Here´s some more reading (and a similar poll) :

Using the hosts file alone will never stop all popups since it does not block anything that is on the same server.

Hi Pieter,
I also use the hosts file, and I was wondering whether the hosts file provided in your link is more comprehensive than S. Martins host file.

Hi Douglas,
It appears to be a very old version of S.Martins hosts file.

I use Spyblocker.I tried free popup killers but I like Spyblocker better. It stops a number of different nuisance/security threats.I guess it is a multi-function program but payware also. That's the only program I use for popups. No combos here.

Reviving this poll (since it was lost in a non-poll forum section)... :D
I use a free one: AnalogX POW! (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm), however, it never sees any pop-ups because my primary pop-up defense is really tight security settings for the Internet Zone in Internet Explorer. (Active scripting disabled, along with Java and ActiveX)
I add any sites that need those capabilities into the Trusted Zone. I have maybe 30 sites in total in the Trusted Zone at this time. I add to this a Hosts file (SMartin's (http://www.smartin-designs.com/downloads.htm) and Hpguru's (http://asp.flaaten.dk/download/pafiledb.php?action=category&id=2) in a combined file), which blocks thousands of sites that host pop-ups, and also IE-SpyAd (http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD) (which basically adds a few thousand sites into the IE Restricted Zone - also known sources of pop-ups).

Seriousl;y if you turn off actie x and active scripting (VB and javascript in particular) and java that should kill most popup ups.
ITjere are CSS popups but those are still rare.
IMHO the name of the game is to allow functionality wihile restrocting vulnerability.
If you "live like a monk" figuratively speaking , i.e use a plain text only browsers, don't accept html mail, don't download programs , etc, you don't really need that much security software.
Here's an example.
I'm often amused at the extent users of outlook for example take to secure their email, with regards to web-bugs
Some people block outlook from accessing remote port 80 using a firewal. Others use third party mail proxies to strip off offending html ,.
The ",monk" approach would be too simply not accept html mail OR better uet move to something more secure to Thebat!, poccomail or pegsaus
On the other hand if you like to live dangerously, then you definitely need protection.

i use popup manager , website is http://www.endpopups.com
it is quite accurate in blocking popup
however, i feel that the number of illegitimate popup windows now decreases, compared to two years before
maybe webmasters realise that having popup wont do any good for the surfers

I use IE-Spyad which I installed prior to purchasing ZoneAlarm Pro. But, I have ActiveX controls & Javascript turned off however, some sites will request that I turn them on and I have a choice as to whether or not I wish to comply. ZoneAlarm Pro has a built in pop-up killers - end result no pop-ups but sometimes the occasional ads [depends where I surf] will line up like little soldiers at the bottom of my taskbar waiting for me to open them. I simply right click my mouse on each, and close them without viewing or them ever appearing on my screen. The latter also happened before installing ZAPro.

Hi there :)
When riding Opera, well... no need for further comment.
Otherwise, I let WebWasher do the job.
When experimenting with other browsers, I still use ATGuard - still such an amazingly useful soft', even with the firewall option disabled.

There are dozens of sites offering hosts file for download. These 3 are fairly popular.

Pieter (or like minded folks who also know stuff),
Great tip and info here. Thanks. One thought in case you can help. As I use AOL to browse, do any of the free blockers mentioned work within AOL? If I use AOL and the open IE seperately, its too slow. I installed googles toolbar, which is great if you are in IE, but does zip when in AOL. Any tips would be great.
Thanks

It's hard to say. I've seen some popup blockers give special instructions for AOL users, but there are other methods, that i find it hard to believe would fail even if you are using AOL (not that I know much about AOL).

Hi chockachan,
I found two that explicitly promise they work for AOL:
http://www.panicware.com/popupstopper-popupkiller.html (AOL 8.0)
http://www.exitkiller.com/ (AOL 7.0 and 8.0)
There will undoubtedly be more and I can´t tell you from first-hand experience how effective they are, but others might.

Just sawyour note as well. The other methods. Can you elaborate sport? Did you mean my settings? I have them on 'High' and 'Block', as in the forum mentioned by ohters, but someof the pop uos dubbed "Messenger Services" scamming stuff seem to sneak in. Or did you mean something else? IThanks.

Messanger spam is a completely different business. For that a proper firewall blocking the relevant ports or just switching off the messanger service is sufficent.
About "normal" popups as a result of visiting websites..
I could be wrong, but I think AOL works via a proxy system? So some of the popup blockers which work the same way can't function.
Other methods - well one that I'm sure will work involves disenabing Javascript .er.. active scripting in IE
Switching to a browser with built in popup blocking <i>should</i> also work for AOL users, Mozilla, Opera etc.

It's good , but try blocking their IP address in your firewall and see how many times a day it calls home ;) .
I like to use a browser built in popup blocker , such as Crazybrowser which has it's own blocklist , Outpost firewall blocking active scripting and popups and various merged HOSTS files , seems to cover 99% of all crap including popups nicely. ;D

Hah! Great question! We cannot tell you which of all the layered defense is doing what by now but we do use Maxthon which blocks ads. The interesting thing is that we get an option to block certain popups and others are just dis-allowed as if it is an intelligent blocker.
What do you people do who have complete popup blocking and you go to a website that has a legitimate (non-ad) popup that you may wish to view?
Be seeing you.

That only occurs the first time you use Firefox. It's a feature to tell newbies, what is happening.
type about:Config in the address/location bar.
Look for privacy.popups.firstTime when it is set to true, it will result in a popup whenever a popup is blocked then switch itself off to false.
