Trend Micro Online scan is constantly recommended for health checks and malware removal - but exactly how good is it? How does it compare with the better 'regular' AVs in terms of its detection rate? Is it perhaps intended more for those who have been a bit careless in their protection habits, or does it represent a worthwhile adjunct to things like KAV and NOD?
Any thoughts on this?

Its good, but i recommend that you use BitDefender,McAfee or F-Secure instead for really thorough check. You can find them (and lots of others) on my site www.security-ops.tk
PS: McAfee requires you to register or sign-in with MSN Passport in order to use it.

For speed and detection I would suggest RAV ONLINE SCAN. www.ravantivirus.com

One good thing about Trend Micro Housecall, at aleast at the UK site, http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/housecall_launch.php , is that it can run in Firefox.

So not exactly a ringing endorsement for Trend Micro! But I guess it has its uses.
