Since there have been some questions about the expected new version.

We are however notifying you (our customers and the general public) that we have entered into the late stages of beta testing. Except for some minor polishing and some last minute initial bug fixes, we are nearly done and should be ready to release Ad-aware 6 to our customers mid January 2003 and to our freeware users at the beginning of February 2003.

I hope I don't get crushed here, but I am very glad to read this.
I know that AAW really has to prove itself after all the nonsense during the past year or so, but I am sure going to give it a chance. After all, it was the first major spyware cleaner.
It can never hurt to have more than one anti-spyware app. on your computer!

Douglas,
No one will crush you for posting that ;).
That said: Until AA v6 has been released and proven doing the job, I for one would recommend against using the actual version - it might havoc a spyware infested system.
Let's see what the Lavasoft future brings!
regards.

You´ll have to do that before installing version 6 anyway, but nobody said you have to. Paul just reminded us that Spybot handles new spyware programs better then Adaware 5.83.

You can check with Adaware 5.83 after you used Spybot S&D.
They won´t bite each other. (The programs, that is ;D)

Hi TEL,
For the moment: rely on Spybot. As for AA 5.83: Uninstalling is an option. Merely scanning - but no cleaning is another one.

Wouldn't advice adware to my worst enemy - an app able to wreck a system :P - by design ::). No software can trash a winsock better than adawarez. I prefer spyware on my pc rather than being shut off from the net for good :P

caligula,
I agree to a certain extent, but please remember it is the spyware messing up your winsock, not Adaware.

Pieter

Pieter,
Sounds like: "it's the virus infecting your system - don't blame the antivirus that should take care of it". No way: an antivirus should take care of known viruses - an antispyware should take care of known spyware. All those using adwarez simply cannot. Blame: Adwarez. Isn't there logic in this? 8)

That´s the extent I agreed upon ;D
When you buy/install something to take care of things for you, it is reasonable to expect it to do just that.
Unfortunately spyware is beginning to evolute into more and more complex programs. (I´ve seen spyware that made me wish I had installed a simple virus ;) )
The statement from Adaware is saying the old program can´t cope with the new malware.

Pieter

Snakes alter your winsock, but it's the improper removal that messes it up ! ;)
I've added a warning over a month ago on my spyware and tools page about any use of Ad-aware other than for scanning purposes until release ov version 6.0 which hopefully will be able to deal with newer snakes that do alter your winsock.

Hello All,
I've been an Adaware plus user since version 5.6 and have also been using SpyBot as my backup. But since no Ref file has been released I've just been using Spybot. I do plan on upgrading to the new version of Adaware when it is released but it will no longer by my primary spy-ware defense. Now thanks to Spybot and SpywareBlaster the need to rely on one program is gone.
It's a shame that this has happened, I think even if the 5.83 version could not have removed new spyware that an updated version with the remove option turned off and new ref files put out could have been done. By turning off the remove and giving a link to the forum for help with removing any spyware would have addressed this issue until version 6 was released. As it is using version 5.83 will not find any new spyware so you wouldn't even know if you're spyware free.
Just my two cents ;D
