I have done almost all tweaks on my puter and have got real good performance; virtual memory, modem speed etc.
http://www.pureperformance.com/
http://www.modemhelp.org/
http://speedguide.net/
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/Bandwidth.asp
http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/4534
http://www.inboost.com/speed-tweaks/computer-tweaks.html
This all is something you individual have to experience mostly by yourself but there you find real good help on these sites too
Go for it ;)

Hi Krusty,
Have you checked out the best software (IMO) M$ ever made: http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/BootVis.asp
Together with the tips on this site: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm it could enormously increase your boot speed.
Regards,
Pieter

Hi Pieter
Hhhhmmm, arenīt those just for XP ? I have 98. And it doesnīt take much time to boot this machine.....maybe 30 seconds....I have to confess I do not really know what exactly is for example Himem.sys but I added it on Config.sys file together with EMM386.exe as I was adviced....they should be the very first 2 lines on the file. APM ( power management) is disabled....defragmenting is customized...but the best tweak really indeed is virtual memory [Vcache] on System.ini file, MaxFileCache, MinFileCache, ChunkSize, the values must be calculated for every amount of memory ...my puter has 192 Mb RAM so my Vcache looks like this way:
[Vcache]
MinFileCache=24576
MaxFileCache=24576
ChunkSize=512
But one more remarkable thing is , that I have made slow ( read VERY slow) 56 k modem connection atleast 200 % faster ! And without any soft neither hardwear. Just studying those sites :) .
best regards *Ari*
ps. you can make your fast connection even faster too

Too bad, I was under the impression you were using XP as well. Not much to gain in increasing my connection speed.
Most download sites canīt keep up anyway :D
I did use DRTcp to check if it could be improved.
What really helped (for surfing) was implementing a hosts file and using Adshield.

Pieter

Hello Pieter!!
Would you mind giving me a quick description of what BootVis does? I went to the link, but it was just the legal agreement to proceed to download. What does it actually do? Sounds very intriguing. I have XP on two boxes (at work and on one drive at home) and am very interested. Of course, XP boots fast anyway, but as you said - life is short and every second counts!
Hope 2003 is Good To You!

Anytime John :)
Bootvis runs from the Local Settings\Temp folder.
The first time you run it you should click Trace > Next boot + Driver delays. The program then prompts you to reboot and monitors all activity during boot. This includes everything you check in the left pane.
The second time you click Trace > Optimize system
This time it will make some changes in your registry and optimize the bootsequence.
After that itīs time to see how much difference it made. I would suggest you repeat Trace > Next boot + Driver delays to see how much and how time was won.
I will include a screenshot.

Pieter

I have cold beer ;D
but seriously; tweaking right way it makes CPU idle, cooler. Itīs up to virtual memory.
There are some cooler softwares ok but havenīt tried, maybe īcoz this really donīt need one. CPUīs temperature is stable...around 38 celsius....up to 40. Not sure what it should be for the best performance, the lower the better right ?

Krusty
have tryed every trick in the books an my vmemory wont accept tweaking....very very odd.....
not sure what the best temp is....38 sounds about right........for overclocking I use a cooler.....when pushing over 900,000 bps.....I don't do that these days....as Peiter said the websites can't keep up...........
