ps. 98lite customises the Windows98 Explorer shell, accessorises and accelerates the Windows98 Operating System and can remove Internet Explorer.

Oh, Ari!

It's great!! I run the sleek version on my Windows 98SE and have for about a year.

LitePC is from Brooks Software way down under........

I was first introduced to them by using the freeware "ERADICATOR" that PROVED Internet Explorer could be "non-integrated" from the Operating System. It was used as evidence against Microsoft in the DOJ suit. Microsoft had sworn under oath, that the browser could not be "unbundled" from Win98 and ME. Brooks proved it could be done and done very well. The prosecution used Brooks software to show just how easy it was. I guess Microsoft hadn't planned on the Dept. of Justice knowing how to use Google! Brooks is working on an Eradicator for IE6 now.

But, LitePC ---- they have several modes you can use it in. Some things require the use of the HTML rendering engine and you can get rid of the browser while keeping the engine. There is an even sleeker version than mine called, MicroPC or something like that. One of the guys in our office uses it and it is veryyyyyyy fast. It's all based on the old 95 Explorer (windows explorer) vs. the 98 incarnation. There is no question 95's Explorer was very, very fast and of course many believe more functional. Lite PC can get Win98SE all the way down from BLOATware to a respectable size - and make it much faster no matter which "lite" you use. I highly recommend it.

Last I knew they were trying an XPLite, but were having a nightmare because of XP's need to communicate with Microsofts computers and the ever-changing problems regarding the service packs. But, it sure would be nice.

Thank you John for your answer

The very first question might be concerning back up, if you like to get old 98 back, how is that? Just removing "Lite PC" brings back old OS ?

Have a nice weekend

I believe the latest version has all options available, so that you can have or have not, IE, OE, shell integrations, etc.
I used 98 lite from the time of its first beta release. I eventually had a screamingly fast, rock solid 98SE, that never crashed on me once. The only reason I switched to Win2k was because 2k has limitless resources, and Netscape was turning into Netscrap. I couldn't get Opera to work on half the sites then, so I switched to 2k and used some of the different browsers that used IEs engine for a while.
Now Opera is solid and I anxiously await Win2k LITE!!!
Comeonnnnnn Shane.
If you enjoy a little adventure with your computer, try 98 lite. If you are nervous as H*** about screwing your computer up, then don't.
If your hard drive is big enough or you have a CD burner, get a Imaging program and back up your C drive, so you can go back to it.
I really like Acronis right now, but there is a free one thats pretty good to, but I can't remember the name right now.
Old age. :-[

I can vouch for that. I haven't had one crash since using that product. BSODs are a thing of the past!
In my mind, it has to be connected.

I looked over the litpc site and it sounds very attractive. One question...does anybody know if it has network capabilities. Or, maybe I should wait for the xp version to come out, since that's what I'm running now.

It would be nice to have a lean xp without the licensing nonsense and the various little communication programs that took me forever to get rid of.

Hmmm...... I wasn't networked then, but I think you can use it. The last time I saw 98lite, what Shane had done, was make options out of everything and put them in the Windows setup section, so you could add or remove at your pleasure.
I like to network using NetBeui instead of Netbios over TCP and you should be able to install that and ICS or a proxy program if you don't have a router.
As for the licensing crap of XP, no way around that which is legal.
I imagine Shane cannot personally answer questions today because there are so many users of 98lite, but I used to email him and get answers all the time.

Question: is 98lite autorun if put on floppy or cd ?

Got myself a laptop that already has 98 installed but the kids totally messed it up.....an can't get into windows. 98lite would be great for it if I could install it without having to use the os thats already on it.......can not even open....can't get pass the logo screen.

Okay, it's all beginning to sink in. It's hell to be so tech ignorant that you can't read simple info and understand.

Let's see if I finally have it straight. LitePC is a Windows modifier. It isn't the full version of any Windows product, but a small program that can rid Windows of the Microsoft bloat. Did I get that right? I only had to read most of the LitePC site for it to sink in.

I have xp home on my machine, so I'll have to wait anyway. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Yes. The best way to install it is a clean install.
You boot to a 98lite floppy or CD (it is a small program) and use it to install Windows off the CD or if you have a split partition, you can copy WinXP to the d:partition say, and it will run faster.
The full set of directions comes with the program. Read the read me.
When 98lite installer runs, it asks if you want to install certain things, so if you want, IE never sees your C drive.

Hey, don't feel bad about not being able to figure it out from the web site. It does kind of assume one already knows a little of what it does before getting down to what it really is --- in people-speak. Great product though....everything root said is absolutely 100% true!

As far as the XP version - he's having some trouble. Apparently, he has a lot of the bloat out but not to where it enhances performance all that much. There is just SO MUCH in XP. I was reading Fred Langa tonight and he was writing about when the original Windows 3.0 debuted in 1990--- it was on four 5.25" floppies; a little under -- get this -- 5MB!!!! Windows XP????? -- a little under 500MB!!

The other problem is the tethering. There's little that can be done there within the bounds of the law anyway. Apparently we'll always be tethered for certain critical apps to Microsoft's computers in Redmond.

You just have to love threads like this. The discovery, the comments and information, and finally the big payoff, and we all learn a lot in the meantime...

How cool is this! 8)

Thank you Root for taking part of this session.
When I bought computer and win98, they just forgot to tell me that I need to download alot of programs to keep up whole system, and running it properly. I see M$ products like old hotrod vehicles with rusty bodies and with old engines no parts available, so I have to improvise the most of it; making custom hotrods. I wonder I surfed alot before I learnt anything even about firewalls ! Ok, I was hacked and cracked so I had to start learning. [ grc.com,Wilders.org]

back to topic: MSN messenger did not run after removing IE, so I had to redownload IE. No other problems. Next time I will install " Clear Lite" , if only I need to do format C someday (again). ;)

Did you try Trillian before going to such drastic measures?

Haha. Drastic measures; that's good....

What is the free trial litepc thing. Why do people pay if there's a free version? DOes it have missing features? Will I be so amazed that I'll just send money anyway?

Where do people get Win98 drivers now that M$ doesn't support 98 anymore?

Hi. I'm not familiar with the trial version, but I'm sure it's crippleware, just to give you a taste.
Updates can be found here.

I guess there will be no more after those. >:(
