View Full Version : Which security prog. is preventing site opening?

Q Section

Hah! Now we have gone and done it! We have so much layered security we cannot tell which programme is disallowing a site to be opened. Specifically www.customize.org. It is not the browser's protection (we are not using IE), it is not the firewall or it's plugins, it is not a setting in IE>Internet Options>Security, it is not SpywareBlaster, it is not the AV programme nor the AT programme. Anyone have any ideas? We cannot even ping their site.

Of course the site may be down but it is not likely. Why? Sometimes when we are here on Wilders and we are viewing page one of a thread clicking to follow onto page two gives us a "The page cannot be displayed." Upon "Refresh" we can get it sometimes.

Q

the actions you are reporting is happening at several websites.....I have also experience it....an suspect it to be an "on-purpose" injection....that prevents certain users with certain security from entering the website...as yet I have not discovered what is doing the "preventing" that "what" may well be something used for hijacking or by ad companies....perhaps if by webmasters.

The website you post is fairly clean.. Adclick is present at the site....an also this:
<<<http://c4.maxserving.com/iserver/clip>>>>...

using a host file......perhaps
(I entered without any issues)

"It is not the browser's protection (we are not using IE),....it is not a setting in IE>Internet Options>Security"

You secret guys confuse me sometimes :)

Anyway....IE 6 SP1\high Internet Zone setting\accept NO cookies, latest IE-Spyad(it's not showing as restricted site)....reached the site with no difficulties @ this time.

Q

blocking the site maxserving does not prevent "entering"..nor does blocking the adclick servers..

also at the site are:

<vapaa.dc.inet.fi>

< deskmod.com>

<deviantart.com>

<artuproar.com>

nothing exceptional at the site..........so its doubtful that its your security blocking you...........

if you can't ping their site then it's likely that it's sopmething to do with your ISP either blocking deliberately or accidentally that site or more likely a range of IP numbers that include that site or having a misconfigured dns server

try it via one of the anon proxies you will find listed on google and see if it works then

We are using a browser that uses the IE engine but.........the browser has settings that make it considerable more secure than IE.

Having spoken with the people who run the ISP connection and not finding anything wrong we now have rebooted into another drive and another OS. Guess what? Same problem! About the last thing we can think of is the router. We will next check it.

Any one else with any more ideas until we come back?

Can you do a favour? Go to http://customize.org and then click on several items in the left column and see if you can make the links. We can get to the homepage but not the links. We were originally trying to get to the Rainmeter skins.

** Rainmeter is a feature rich system meter with support for multiple layers of png images (just like Rainlender). It can measure all of the basic system statistics such as physical ram, virtual memory, swap, and hard drive space. When coupled with MBM5, it can measure system temperatures and fan speeds. Rainmeter also has the ability to display the time as an analog clock with second, minute, and hour hands. Also available as a Litestep module.

To everyone:
A big thank you for all your assistance. We have just now found the problem. It is that if we try the main page as "www.customize.org" as found in Google or the links on the left side of the page as in "www.customize.org/list/rainmeter" it does not work but if we manually take out the "www's" and then then try it, we get any page we desire.
-{ Quote: "Good Golly Miss Molly....is all he want was the SKINS..." }- Yes we already have the main programme and we were looking for some skins.

bigc73542 - which browser are you using? Apparently it does not have the www problem for some reason.

Notok

You know, I've been noticing this kind of problem now and again, with or without changes to the local system. I've kind of been wondering if there haven't been routing issues going on somewhere..

Marja
October 28th, 2004, 03:14 AM
So have I, Notok, I thought it was a glitch in my system. Glad to know it is not, but not happy to "not" know what it is!

Is there a way to test all that out? Out of curiousity of course? :)

Notok
October 28th, 2004, 03:34 AM
You could do a traceroute to find out where the signal is stopping: start > run: cmd [enter] then type "tracert yahoo.com" (or whatever site you're going to, you don't need the www), this shows you all the computers your request has to be sent through to retrieve a webpage.. if you didn't know about that before it can explain a lot of things. It only takes one of the many stops between you and the site to break a connection, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, yada yada.

The issue has been so sporadic with me, though, that you'd probably have to get the timing just right.. most of the time I can just hit 'reload' and it'll come up just fine ???

Marja

Like I just tried to reply on another thread, using post reply, instead of quick reply - I kept getting www. limpysquirrel.com, after a couple of other places I know I have never been to, anything but, wilders'. I gave up! Too Tedious!

I thought it was the weather earlier today, lightening and TV stations going off here and there this afternoon, but, we forget that all these "waves" we ride to communicate are not infallible, either.

So, maybe it was the lunar eclipse??? Works for me, at least for tonite! :D

Thanks for the traceroute idea, Notok!

Houston There Is A problem!!!

Well Boys and Girls.....it appears there is an issue upon us......

lyncknot "all" the posted links work well for me......however, that does not same to be the case for you and others.....SO WHY NOT!!!!
Today I deliberately surfed around........trying to duplicate the issue.....

1> Google is imo defintely attemping to force people to use its translator......,.I kept getting german and spanish search results.....an google knows the search is in the U.S.......

2) other people are experiencing the same issues listed here.....on many differant websites.....

so why is it I can use ALL the links posted....an others can't......BigC as well as Ron was able to use ALL the posted links........an there is absolute no question that our system are not the same...not even the same OS

oh by the way....didn't you guys notice the Trace Route that was posted on page one???

These days I don't use the internet enough to be concerned about whats going on.....its very meaningless to me...other than just being curious......but those using the internet should be concerned......obviously something is not right

TheSnowGuy

To reiterate -
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has no record of http://www.customize.org
They do have a record for http://customize.org
Also whois.publicinterestregistry.net has the same record for both. Perhaps when Google's spider originally searched it found the address with the www's but maybe the website changed their address in the meantime to not have the www.

After further checking we believe the people at customize.org changed servers/hosting companies and all the DNS servers are not updated yet. Probably we will not see any problems at all in about 72 hours or less.

Just an intelligent guess.
