Hi, I have just installed FileChecker because I like the idea.

When running the tutorial, however, I see that the recommended scan interval is 1 to 5 seconds. Isn't it too much for the system resources?

Hi Yinda,

Welcome at Wilders.
I´ve got File Checker running at an interval of 5 seconds, checking 8 files every time. For a very short burst it uses 1% of my CPU time and almost no memory. Could you give us some of the specifics of your computer?
I´ll give you mine in exchange ;)
Pentium 4 1.4 GHz
384 MB RIMM
Windows XP Pro

Regards,

Pieter

Thanks Pieter,

It is not necessary to give your configuration in exchange ;)

Mine is Pentium 3 450 MHz, 320 MB, W98SE, not the same ? :-[

My question was theoretical: I have not yet started scanning. But every 5 seconds !

Regards,

Dhat

At the speed computers operate a lot can happen in 5 seconds. On your system File Checker should be able to operate without any noticeable delay.
Even if you were to choose a 1 second interval.

FileChecker can run using only 1% to 4% of CPU with scanning set to 1 second intervals. :) (The 4% mark was recorded on a 233 mhz system, so I don't think you'll have any problems.)

However, it should be noted that this depends on the number of items in your watch-list. Obviously, the more items, the more processing time FileChecker will need to use (but 100 or so, or even more, should not put you above that 4% mark on a 233 mhz system - I have 500 items in the watch-list on a 1.7 Ghz system and FileChecker only uses 2% of the cpu at all times).

It was more of a test, really - I put almost any program or file that could even remotely have anything to do with system safety or security in the watch-list (that includes a very large number of dlls in the Windows System folder). ;)
