Very interesting. It was thanks to his Shields Up program that I found how badly configured my firewall was, and managed to stop trojans finding their way onto my system.

People often focus on antivirus software when a properly setup firewall is just as, if not more important.

I'd agree - an interesting interview. I had to chuckle when he said "...especially these days now that ZoneAlarm has become a bloated feature-overloaded corporate monster compared to the many much smaller and leaner pure personal firewalls..." though.

In fairness, many other firewalls are going the same way - and in part due to features aimed at countering the newer leaktests (DLL/process protection, application launch control, memory space monitoring, etc).

TPF is the biggest example ;) - but Outpost, Kerio, Sygate and others have all had features added to counter techniques like DLL injection (to take one example).

To my mind, real "bloat" would be adding separate features like anti-virus scanning, spam filtering or data encryption (ZASS would be a good candidate here). These are, in my view, unrelated tasks and best done by separate products - the firewall should simply handle network traffic security.

I enjoyed reading the interview very much.

I have great respect for Steve Gibson who has done tremendous work to show up the inadequacies of the Windows OS and without his early efforts, goodness knows what sort of mess we would be in by now.

I thought his comment about taking just 30 seconds for an unprotected system let loose on the internet these days to become infected just about said it all.
