Hi crew! It's nice to see those funny cave people pics and Capt'n Crook fatal way of (...) :o
Hey, in spite of all the hurdles placed in my way by Air Canada, I have finally managed to return to San Diego.
I've been forced to camp out at the Chicago Airport for 24 hours due to the best mismanagement displayed by the airlines. Clearly they have been perfecting their management techniques for some time >:(
While on a preliminary ecological survey, Fire-Ant sighted an Apatosaurus at a nearby watering hole.

Hi Captain,
I hope your delay is short.
I like the dino animation and the water and cloud reflections are well done!
How are you able to do this from an airport?
Have a safe journey.

Thanks Devinco! :) Nay! I haven't done it at the airport! If I had a laptop with me I would not complain much. All I did was crosswords and long walks! :(

Probably but I can tell you I was so upset about the whole thing that I tell one of their employees that they will never see me again. I can wait 2, 3, 4 hours but 24 hours is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too long! :o Especially when you move a lot. I had to stay there to make sure I will be in the next plane.

Hey Captain!!!
Come back!! Oh, boo-hoo! I never get to see the Captain anymore, all I do is keep stepping in dinosaur p**p. It gets all over my paws and fur and I REFUSE to give myself a bath after that!!
I need something like an elephant!! But, I haven't seen anything like that here. Do you suppose maybe their is a pre-historic cat that doesn't mind cleaning up Dino P**P, Devinco!?
Hey!! Where did everyone go???
Marja
November 2nd, 2004, 01:28 AM
WAAAAAH!!!! I WANT MY MOMMMMMMMY!!!! THIS IS SOOO GROSSS! I CAN'T STAND IT,EEEEWWWWWWWW!!

Devinco
November 2nd, 2004, 01:28 AM
Hi Marja,
Sorry I'm a modern cat. I don't clean dino p**p.
But if you take a swim in that Apatosaurus' lake, I can give you a lift to our next destination, wherever that may be.
Marja

I am afraid I am going to have to throw this baby out and KEEP his bath water, as much as I (shudder!) hate to get WET!!! This is the worst WET ever!!!
Marja
November 2nd, 2004, 01:42 AM
Aaaaah, look at 'im!! I can't kick him out! I guess I'll go to the lake, unless I find a good spot of sand, the little tyke is just too cute. Yea, that's the life!! (sigh)

Don't blame ya, Devinco!! Should have went to that inter-active museum in Chicago, they have one there, don't they!!? Those sound so much more fun - than the REAL caveman days have been!!

Hmmmm, I'll call a scientist to invent another time machine and send this dinosaur back to where he came from! This dinosaur's size is way too big for us to handle! ;D
If we were to adopt him, we would have to bring him home and take care of him!
But, his size is too big, I don't think he can go through your house door either. ;D ;D

Interesting thread, you all. I want to travel too! To go back to 17th Century France, to the Blois Castle near the Loire, with which I feel a deep connection for some reason. Twice I have been there, and both times I felt eerily fused with it- not as a former resident, but more in the sense of how a local villager might perceive it, the grand chateau which was the center of my known, and also unknown worlds or something. If you're going that way....
Marja
November 13th, 2004, 03:58 AM
I think that is one of the times we are going to! You can find the Time-line at the beginning of this thread, I think? Will have to check? ;D
First, we have to find BigC's time, he wants to see The "first spark" of Life. I think he means "intelligent" life, maybe not? BigC??

I am sure Uguel would say you're welcome to input and travel anytime, GalC. :)

I'll wax poetic for a second:
The very spark of life itself, and the forever undiscoverable circumstaces of its genesis which just underscores its complete unknowability to lowly humans, is like the concept of infinity- totally beyond human comprehension except very abstractly- and these great imponderables are what constitute God to me, for lack of a better word. The "is" that is and was and shall be forever... truths way beyond our mortal reach... I just respect those perpetual mysteries and view them as the nature of the divine itself. Heavy nuff for an early Sat. morn? LOL. :)
Marja
November 13th, 2004, 05:57 AM
If it's beyond our comprehension, it won't really matter what time or day it is, will it?

Hi Galcoolest! :)
As you probably saw, we are travelling to the different periods of time we agreed to go to as discussed on the first page. I would be delighted to have you travelling with us! Just make yourself comfortable and enjoy the scenery. Your comments, ideas or creativity are welcome too. ;) As you probably notice, our main purpose of travelling is to satisfy our curiosity and for plain fun as well. We might sometimes talk of something "serious" but we do it without taking ourselves too seriously. We respect each other views and try to post something that is pertaining to the topic. For brevity, I do not draw the whole crew in the every adventure. I tend to choose a member or two
as the stars for a given period. In the first scene Devinco was starring, this second one Fire-Ant and Ritaan are, and the next scene will have someone different... So, you would like to go to 17th century France to the Blois castle...Mmm...let's see where we have to go before...Ok, these are our next destinations:
1. The earth BEFORE the beginning of life.---we will return
there to speak about how things might have begun---
2. The Jurassic Era

I'm cool with going to Blois any time before the French Revolution (cus the nobility and social structure around there changed forever then, and the castle wasn't the cool focus of everything any more, but a hated reprsentation of the (then) loathed past). Clues to the evolution of humans' large brain
A birth defect gene may be key to the evolution of the large brain of humans
The human brain may have tripled in size over the last 2.5 million years. Despite having bodies only around one-fifth larger than chimpanzees, our brains are around 250 per cent heavier. This dramatic expansion, during our evolution, is thought to have paved the way for language, higher thought and other unique aspects of human mental capacity.
Now, for the first time, researchers - working independently in two US universities - have uncovered a gene which may have contributed in the evolution of the human brain. That gene, ASPM, was linked in 2001 to a disease called microcephaly, which can cause a 70 per cent reduction in the size of the human brain, and associated mental retardation.
"People have studied the evolution of the brain for a long time, but they have traditionally focused on comparative anatomy and physiology," said Bruce Lahn, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute geneticist at the University of Chicago in Illinois. "There really hasn't been any convincing evidence until now, of any gene whose changes might have contributed to the evolution of the brain."
Lahn and his team in Chicago, and evolutionary biologist Jianzhi Zhang at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, independently hit upon the idea that ASPM might have played a role in brain expansion, after a study linked the gene to microcephaly in 2001.
By comparing human ASPM with a version of that gene in animals, both investigators have shown rapid changes in the primate lineage leading to humans. Differences in ASPM between apes and humans might therefore explain the relative growth of the cerebral cortex - seat of abstract reasoning and higher thought.
Scientists completed the draft version of the chimpanzee genome last December, providing more of the kind of raw data that makes these comparative studies possible.
Loss of function of abnormal spindle-like microcephaly associated gene (ASPM), to give it its full name, is linked to the brain-shrinking birth defect which crops in somewhere between four to 40 per million live births in Western nations. The genetic defect causes a massive reduction in the cerebral cortex, creating a brain similarly sized to that of our 2.3 to 3 million-year-old ancestor Australopithecus afarensis, of which the fossil known as Lucy is the most famous example. Lucy may have had a brain less than 450 grams; today, normal human brains weigh 1350 to 1450 grams.
To test the idea that changes in ASPM led to increased brain size, Lahn's team and Zhang both set out to look for signatures of accelerated evolution, by comparing it to versions of ASPM in other animals.
Lahn, co-authors Patrick Evans, Jeffrey Anderson and colleagues compared the DNA sequence of ASPM with six other apes and monkeys, each sequentially more primitive in the primate family tree: chimp, gorilla, orangutan, gibbon, macaque and owl monkey. The findings were published online in January 2004 in the journal Human Molecular Genetics.
Zhang, who details his study in the December 2003 issue of the journal Genetics, chose to look at ASPM's sequence in most of these monkeys. Both he and Lahn also compared the gene to that in many other animals, including pigs, whales, dogs, hamsters, bears and others.
The researchers looked for ‘positive selection’ as evidence those alterations in ASPM were often advantageous to human ancestors.
Positive selection is when changes to the DNA sequence of a gene are frequently also translated into changes in the amino acid sequence of the protein that gene codes for (as opposed to changes that make no difference to the protein). If natural selection does not favour changes to the gene, fewer will find their way into the protein product.
Both Zhang and Lahn's team found evidence that changes in human ASPM had been sped up by natural selection. There was also some less-pronounced evidence of accelerated sequence evolution in great apes. There was little evidence of accelerated change in that gene of other animals tested.
According to Lahn's team, the highest rates of positive selection were seen in those lineages which led to great apes and then directly to humans from the last common ancestor with chimpanzees. "These are periods when hominoid brains underwent dramatic expansion in size, as well as growth in structural and functional complexity," the researchers wrote.
However, ASPM's beneficial effect on brain size may have reached a limit, says Zhang. The fossil record suggest that the main period of expansion started 2 to 2.5 million years ago and ended around 200 000 to 400 000 years ago. "The episode of rapid evolution in ASPM had ended by 100 000 years ago, and the gene is currently stabilized in modern humans," said Zhang.
“Big brains are related to strong social bonds, high levels of intelligence, intense parenting, long periods of learning, and ability to deal with volatile environments,” added Zhang. “Exactly which one was the initial force driving the human brain expansion is unknown. In comparison to the great apes, early hominids lived in more open and dry areas, which made it difficult to escape from predators and find water. Thus, the brain size expansion may be related to the ability to cope with volatile environments, as some people believe. But, there is no definite answer yet."
Now we should look for genes that might explain the shape of the human brain, not just its large size, commented neurologist Christopher Walsh at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Walsh was part of the team that, led by Dr Geoff Woods at the University of Leeds, linked the ASPM gene to microcephaly in 2002. "Primates have very big frontal lobes, necessary for social interactions, language, and cognition… genes were probably also subject to evolutionary selection to regulate the shape of the brain," he said.
"Neanderthal man had a brain that was about the same size … but was shaped differently – more upright, and less football-shaped," said Walsh. “A genetic change may explain that difference, and ultimately we may discover a family of genes responsible for regulating different aspects of human brain structure.”

Physicists around the world starting to belive in possibillity Big Bang was a product of strings.
In string theory, the strings collide over small but finite distance producing a "short circuit" The Big Bang..

STRINGS!!! Strings!! How can that be???
Strings are for cats to play with, or packages that cats can rip apart! STRINGS are not for any universes!!
Hey! Look out your window!! I see the universes and they don't have a single or double or triple STRING!!
Strings are for cats!! Dinosaurs are for Fire-Ants! LOL!!
OK, maybe guitar strings are the universes's strings! Yea! the guitar's make the noise with the strings, then BANG! A rocker hits you with a bottle on the head and you think it is the universes's "BIG BANG" song!!

I don't think it's possible to explain universe in few words. In string theory, there could be as many Universes as ther's grains of sand on our planet.. We humans don't trully understand own sollar system.. What was the mechanism to form the Sun and planets around our star.. What is the deffinition of "life" and "inteligence" Is there higher force or even Singularity (artofficial inteligence, and maybe our next toppic) that controls Supersymmetry (In theoretical physics string theories require Supersymmetry).. If our own universum expands, when it will reach it's maximum? Will it start to shrink again to form yet another Big Bang? Hell we no nothing about Earth or our oceans to begin with.. I know this one... ;D 8) Well it was a great big ball of fire... ;D One of theory is that when our sollar system formed, earth and other planets were bombarded with comets. Dirty snowballs.. (not "bown balls" Cochise.. :P ;D )
It's been belived (many different theorys there too ) that one of those gigantic comets collided with earth chopping big slice of it that stayed in earth's orbit forming our moon about 4½ billion years ago.. As earth cooled the volcanoes errupted great amounts of carbon dioxide, steam, ammonia and metane into the atmosphere. Amminoacids took care of creation of first primitive cells. Those primitive life forms on their part started photosynthese (using sunlight) to convert carbon dioxide and water to food, energy and oxygen..

Well ladies and gentlemen we are now slipping through time towards the very begining of the universe. We don't know exactly what to expect but I do know we will have to watch out for the magnetic pull of any black holes that are anywhere in our region of space they could create a worm hole that would take us to a completely foreign universe. There is no telling what we might encounter there.

our reserv power is at 100% the main hydrogen inverters are at 85% due to the chemical laden water we were forced to use in the inverters but hopefully it will be diluted enough bt then to be able to give 100% if needed. I don't forsee any problems, but you know how unpredictable time travel can be

(SPACE.com) -- Incredibly massive black holes had fully matured just a billion years after the birth of the universe, according to two separate studies.
Scientists already had strong evidence that black holes grew to gargantuan heft early in the universe. Several have been found to pack the mass of hundreds of millions of suns or more. But now scientists are pushing the limit of how far back in time they spot such objects and improving the firmness of their measurements.
In a study announced today, a black hole catalogued as SDSSp J1306 appears to be about one billion times as massive as the sun. It is 12.7 billion light-years away, meaning the light just recorded -- by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory -- took 12.7 billion years to reach the vicinity of Earth.
The universe is thought to be 13.7 billion years old.
A similarly massive and distant black hole was studied recently with the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton X-ray satellite. The object, SDSSp J1030, is 12.8 billion light-years away.
"These two results seem to indicate that the way supermassive black holes produce X-rays has remained essentially the same from a very early date in the universe," said Daniel Schwartz of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Schwartz was involved in the Chandra study. "This implies that the central black hole engine in a massive galaxy was formed very soon after the Big Bang."
The Big Bang is the leading theory for the origination of the universe as we know it.
Black holes can't be seen, because light and everything else that gets too close to them falls in and becomes trapped. But as gas approaches a black hole, it is superheated, making it glow in X-rays.
To find and measure black holes, astronomers examine these X-rays, along with the gravitational influence of a presumed black hole on the galaxy in which it resides. The results of both studies were reported in recent issues of the Astrophysical Journal.
The black hole in the Chandra study is producing energy at the rate of twenty trillion suns.
How such massive and energetic structures formed so quickly remains a major puzzle for scientists. Mergers of smaller galaxies and their black holes may have played a role. Researchers suspect that black hole formation and galaxy development go largely hand-in-hand, but they cannot say which comes first.

(YAWNNNNNNNNN) OH! Excuse me, I and the Pssst! team have been packing for days on end! We want to make sure everything gets thru the Black Hole with us. Does anyone know what they wear on the "other" side of the Universe?
We, of course, can shape shift, but, it is sooo much fun to don the clothes of our hosts! I have had to put my paw down quite a bit, there's only sooo much room in the den!
Shorty, also brought some tapes from space.com, where they have the SETI channel? It has some great images and stories! You should check it out!! http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/blackhole_sim_020130.html
He found another place with MPEG's of all kinds of space anomalies! I tried to read it, but, only got through the first paragraph before I slipped into a kitten nap!
"A gravitational field may cause a single point source to appear with multiple images. For a spherical field all of these images will occur in the plane defined by the observer position, the center of the lens, and the source. These images cannot appear in other locations because this would break the principle of conservation of angular momentum along the photon orbits. Therefore all images of a single point source will appear on a single great circle on the observer's sky."
I think it's somewhere around this place, OH, here it is!!
I have to do it the baby way, still haven't got the hang of it! :-[

Do you think they are working gold mines or something?? Here's a picture that came with it!
Seems a strange place to raise chickens and sell eggs, don't it, Sirs?

While we're here could we visit the Lost city Museum
The Lost City Museum was built by the National Park Service to exhibit artifacts that were being excavated from Pueblo Grande de Nevada. These Anasazi Indian sites were being threatened by the waters of Lake Mead as it backed up behind the newly built Hoover Dam. Eventually, when the lake was filled to capacity, about five miles of sites had been inundated or undercut by the water.
The Civilian Conservation Corps assisted in the excavation of the sites and the construction of the museum building. The building was constructed of sun-dried adobe brick in a pueblo- revival style. The museum also served as the park headquarters for the Boulder Dam State Park that was established at Lake Mead.
The museum is currently owned and maintained by the State of Nevada as one of its six state museums. Program include ongoing archaeological research on the remaining Lost City sites, school tours and outreach programs, changing exhibits and archival library and collections research capabilities. Special public programs are held throughout the year.

Rita I think the idea of visiting the museum is a lot better idea than wanting to go to the houses of ill repute. There is nothing there I want to take home with me! :lurking:
