Hi Evry1!!,
Now i'm a person who likes there freeware programs, an' I could be considered a freebie freak!! but I don't care....hehehe!!
I'm postin' here, b'coz I have a question, as the title says 'Wot Else Will I Need Or Consider Gettin'??' OK, here's the scoop, I already have some security/privacy programs on my comp (which I Luv), but I'm postin' here to ask u guys if definately need, or need to consider gettin' anythin' else to prevent/secure/protect etc... (As Long As There Freeware Programs)....I'm all ready usin' the followin' programs (All Of Which Are Up-To Date): 8)
AVG FREE Edition
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3
Ad-Aware SE Free Edition
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard and...
EMS Free Surfer mk II (Pop-Up Blocker)
I've Already read about the program PG (Process Guard), that sounds good, but I wanted to post here, an' read about wot u recommended, before I make any discussions....:)
Apologised if i've posted in the wrong place.... ;)
Any response iz, as always, greatly appreciated....cheers
Thanks (Regards),

If you don't mind spending a little cash you should consider Tds3 info here (http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download) it is a really good antitrojan program, probably the best imo. you can download a trial version if you like.

with the programs you have listed and the ones we mentioned you are on your way to being pretty secure. I also want to mention that to really enhance your security you should consider useing an alternative browser such as Opera 7.54 or firefox 0.93 much more secure than Internet explorer.

Hi Again!!!
But wait, I just had a thought...
doesn't RegistryProt do the same thing as Spybot's TeaTimer (but monitorin' registry changes), or all I mistaken with that theory??
Please reply back....thanks

Good list. Here's a few thoughts....
You might add the free ewido (http://www.ewido.net/en/) to your toolkit. It is now downloading with a "suite" that will cost after 60 days or so. But, after the trial, the software just defaults to regular ewido. Excellent program.
The AVg antivirus program is fine. In fact, I use it exclusively. You will hear all kinds of varying opinions on this, but AVG's paid version for enterprise is excellent and well thought of. The free version is given away simply as an introduction to their enterprise services and is updated regularly, the same as their paid products. It doesn't get the recognition it deserves because it is free in a very competitive consumer marketplace for AV programs.
Naturally, at Wilders, (who hosts their forums), you will read lots of positive reviews about Australia's DiamondCS products (http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=home). Some of their products are indeed very good. It's interesting because here in the USA anyway, they are not very well-known and are not on too many radar screens. Wilders is their "base" and to be honest, Process Guard (especially), and maybe TDS3, deserve wider recognition. But, don't feel that you must own all of their products to be "secure"...........I like them and think they do good work, but some here have their entire inventory of products and encourage people to do the same. That's okay as long as you don't feel as if you truly need them all. I don't mean to offend any of their users here - I am just trying to be honest. With that said, I truly believe the DiamondCS products mentioned above deserve more publicity, marketing, and respect here in the United States. On top of that - they're good people.
Javacool's products are top-notch free utilities and I would add SpywareGuard and MRU Blaster to your list.
I am trying a new beta version (4.53) of Ad Muncher (http://www.admuncher.com/) and am extremely impressed. It seamlessly removes every kind of pop-up, text ad, floaters, you name it. Plus, it has an easy-to-use anonymous proxy as a bonus that can be turned on and off at will. It doesn't get any easier than Ad Muncher and it does much more than "munch" ads. It is truly a solid security tool. It's $25 after trial, but from what I've seen so far, it's worth every dime and is a new addition to my own must-have list.
I noticed you don't have a secure Password Manager/Form Filler. I use Roboform Pro (http://www.roboform.com/) which I couldn't surf without anymore. Strong encryption of all your information in the Pro version. Lesser DES encryption in the free version. For a simple manager of passwords, take a look at the free KeePass Password Manager (http://keepass.sourceforge.net/). It's an open-source project and is very a nice piece of software.
That's just a few thought. By the way, Welcome To Wilders, LJM Master. Stick around and you will learn a lot from many knowledgeable people here that are all - you will find - very willing to help. This is a great place loaded with friendly, helpful people from all over the world.

This is what is set up on my system and they all play together nicely:
1. Nod32 Beta – Anti-virus.
http://www.nod32.com.au
2. Zone Alarm (free) – Firewall with visual outgoing alerts.
http://www.zonelabs.com
3. Spyware Blaster (free) – Spyware Prevention.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
4. Spyware Guard (free) – Real time scanner for Browser Hijack prevention.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
5. Spybot Search and Destroy (free) – Spyware removal and protection, with registry monitor. If running the above 2 programs, your system should remain fairly clean.
http://beam.to/spybotsd
6. Adaware (free) – Spyware removal. What Spybot Search and Destroy doesn’t pick up, this will.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com
7. Script Defender (free) – Script protection.
http://www.analogx.com/contents/dow...tem/sdefend.htm
8. System Safety Monitor (free) – Registry change monitoring.
http://maxcomputing.narod.ru
9. File Checker (free) – Monitors important ".exe" files of various programs.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
10. Mozilla Firefox (free) – Safer Web Browser - try some of the exploit tests in the "Polls" section here at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php it's scary stuff, enough to have most sensible people start looking for better solutions. The programs I listed should be enough to thwart these current exploits.
http://www.mozilla.org
11. Proxomitron (free) – Proxy. This allows a program (local or remote) to sit between your web browser and the Internet at large, to monitor everything and change it if you want to.
http://www.sankey.ws/proxomitron.html
12. Kye-U's filters (free) – Rule Sets for Proxomitron giving greater protection against exploits.
http://www.kye-u.com/proxo/forums/i...topic=131&st=0#
13. Ewido (free) – Anti-trojan. I do NOT use the active file scanner, it slows my system down to much.
http://www.ewido.net/en/
14. Mozilla Thunderbird (free) – For email. I don't use it because I only have Hotmail.
http://www.mozilla.org
15. Mail Washer (free) – Spam email filtering. Again I don’t use it myself, as I have Hotmail.
http://www.mailwasher.net/
16. FirstDefense – ISR – Total System backup. Use this when you have first installed a fresh copy of windows and all your stable programs, do this BEFORE you have transferred your data onto the system.
http://www.raxco.com/products/fdisr/
17. Netgear ProSafe Firewall - Hardware firewall.
http://www.netgear.com.au
The above will give you a very tight system. Ultimately it comes down to safe practices, and it is always best to practice and think of safety, otherwise it will remind you and it won’t hold back in doing so... it's a bit like gravity, very unforgiving...
Hope this helps...
Cheers ;D

That's a good list, Blackspear. It made me realize that in my post I failed to mention ZoneAlarm. I am still sold on the pre-5.0 versions (3.7 and up).
I also agree with you on not using the active scanner in ewido. It slowed me way down as well.

:-\ I would also like to know what you would recommend for me.
I currently have:
Anti-Virus - Norton Anti-Virus 2004 Pro (trialware coming to an end though)
-> considering trying Avast! next
Firewall - ZoneAlarm (free) v4.5
Spyware Prev. - Ad-Aware 6.0 (considering Ad-Aware SE)
Spyware Prot. - Spybot-S&D v1.3
Ad Remover - AdMuncher(trial)
I also have About:Buster and HijackThis. I am also considering WinPatrol. Would you also recommend RegistryProt and TDS-3?
How long is the trial period for TDS-3? I am also trying out different registry cleaners.
What else should I get (hopfully with no conflictions)?
Thanx so much for your time and advice. As always, it is truly appreciated :)

mismis29 if you will look back through this thread the information you want is in the different post's, the programs listed are efective on most machines. Most all of the apps listed have a trial period or are free. I would suggest that you trial a few that you don't now have and see how they work on your computer. I would recomend regprot, process guard, and tds3. Tds3 has a thirty day trial. regprot and process guard have a free version.

Ok, here's what I'm considering:
ZoneAlarm v4.5 (already use)
Spyware Blaster (already use)
Spybot S&D (already use)
Ad-Aware 6.0(free) (already use)
TDS-3 (or ewido)
ProcessGuard
SpywareGuard
AdMuncher(free) - or some other pop-up/ad remover (Already use)
RegProtect
CCleaner - or other registry cleaner (Already use)
HijackThis (Already use)
About:Buster (Already use)
And of course, some kind of anti-virus.
I'm also considering some sort of startup manager like AutoStart Viewer, Startup Inspector, etc.
BTW, I have to admit that I'm like LJM Master - a freeware junkie ;) If I can get a really good freeware product , then I'm happy. Before I spend money on something that is not freeware, then I have to know if it is the best and that it is absolutely essential.
Are there any conflicts or programs here that ultimately do the same thing and are therefore not really needed? Is there something missing?

That's something to consider since I've read that Firefox can be more secure than Internet Explorer. I do have the Yahoo! toolbar that can block pop-ups, but I have disabled that feature because I'm using AdMuncher. The pop-up blocker in Yahoo! doesn't always block pop-ups, thats the reason that I like to use stand-alone pop-up blockers - they can be configured whereas Yahoo! cannot. Since I have been using ZoneAlarm as well AdMuncher my surfing is fairly quiet. Besides, changing browsers is a little scary for me, since I've been using IE for as long as I can remember :-\
All I know is that I believe I need some extra protection because I have this feeling that some nasties are getting in without me knowing it. Sometimes I think my surfing is a little TOO quiet! ;)
Anyway, thanx for your help. I'm always happy to get your input :)

I was just wondering if any of these programs that I have listed (or anything else for that matter) will be affected by WindowsXP SP2?
In your opinion, should I get SP2 when it becomes available (I have XP Professional and appararently not available through Windows Updates until the end of August)? I've read a lot of posts about this new service pack and I'm not sure if I should get it or not. It seems that many people are having real problems, while others think it's just a waste of space.
According to my 'System' info., these are the specs for my computer:
Microsoft Xp Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 1
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
240 MB RAM
Not that great of a system, I know ::)
I like to use my computer for games as well, so I'm not 100% sure that SP2 would be good.
Sorry for getting off topic. I know this topic is for another forum, i just thought I'd ask since I'm here. Feel free to move it.

I have SP2 installed on more than a dozen machines now, only problem encountered was ZA 5.1.011 locked up 2 systems, removed it and reinstalled a 4.5 version and no more problems.
If you have a Broadband connection then you can download a Pro IT version, or you can wait until it comes available through Windows Update. Microsoft are rolling SP2 slowly output across their servers to balance the load...

IE is way safer then firefox in winxp sp2, it also comes with a spiffy popup blocker. Adaware se and spybot s&d should be plenty to take care of your spyware/adware problems... basically stop clicking on all those flashy ads...
of course an antivirus is a must... nod32 is very good and i would also recommend kaspersky but if you want free then avg is a good way to go.
For firewalls I use outpost, I definately prefer it over zone alarm, but again if you like free then za will do the job. I choose to run only my av and firewall on startup... I'm not a fan of using up a bunch of resources.... ie running 2 programs JUST to monitor you comp INCASE you get spyware...

Ditto what Blackspear is saying about FD-ISR. In my opinion a good, easy-to-use backup program is the most important security program. If despite all of your efforts and shoshing your pc full of protective software, you still end up getting infected, what is better than "going back in time" to a point before you were even infected? :D

I am considering using Foxfire but I do not like the fact that downloads are directed to the desktop. Is there a way around that? I am also concerned that some of my software that I use frequently will not function with Foxfire such as Print Key, iNTERNET Turbo and Flashget. I wish there was some way of knowing in advance which programs will work as before. Also does Winamp work with Foxfire? How difficult is it to replace IE with Foxfire?
I'd appreciate any info...:)

Firefox can be configured to downoad files to any folder you desire. You configure your options in the download manager area.
Extensions such as flashget, etc are easily installed on Firefox.
You can use Firefox as the default browser or use IE as the default browser.
Use any media player you wish.

I am considering using Foxfire but have some concerns. First off I do not like that downloads are placed on the desktop. Is there a way around this feature?
Secondly I wonder how much of my software will not work with it properly. Is there any info reguarding what will or will not work with Foxfire? Espically programs such as Winamp, iNTERNET Turbo, Flashget and Print Key and Winzip.
And how difficult is it to install? Do you have to buy software to remove IE first?
I'd appreciate any info.

Everything will work.

Easy to install. You buy nothing and don't remove IE.

Tools-->options-->download. Select either "Ask me where to save every file" or "Save all files to this folder (selectable).

The answers in order are
1) works - foxytunes rulez with it.
2) don't know, but it looks like a scam, firefox runs very fast on dialups anyway
3) works ,with some tweaks
4) works
5) works

It comes with a installer, easy as pie. It will ask you where you want to install the program, what you want to install. that's it.
-{ Quote: "

No, of course not. You can run both IE and "foxfire" together.

eh, i dunno bout firefox. i have it and after i installed it. still having IE^ as default. it changed stuff on my system. when i went to view a doc or html it had the firefox emblem on it. and winzip failed to work anymore. so i right clicked on the file and chose to change it back to IE6 and no problems. winzip worked again and the only other prg i had to reinstall was nti cd maker somehow it wouldnt boot up gave me a incorrect install or something. reinstalled it and it works. thing is i only installed firefox never told it to do anything. never set it as default or nothing so why then did it just decide to change the way i viewed stuff and make winzip and the other prg fail.? i had the arguement wuith someone else on here before. i still have the firfox on here but i am really thinking strongly about gittin rid of it. i cant have that thing changing things on me without me telling it to. i mean it wasnt all the difficult to fix, but my point is, why should i of had to do it at all.

Is this unchecked in Firefox? IE has a similar place to check. You should be able to uncheck the one in Firefox and check the one in IE and everything will be normal.
Tools, options, general in Firefox. Tools, internet options, programs in IE.

-{ Quote: "now i have AVG, should i be disabling norton?" }-I would keep Norton over AVG if you still have a license for it. You may want to take a look at a few websites such as:
http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/about/index.xml
and
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
in regards to how each product compares.
You could always use AVG as a backup on-demand scanner.
Hope this helps...

All depends if The Trooper is running Win 98 or not. If the answer is yes, then as far as I'm aware its A2 or nothing.

Hiya deefilly,
Let me tell you hunny, FireFox rocks my world. I had some problems with it at first since I switched to it from IE and didn't know crap about it. But it when installing it, it asks if you want to import from IE. Personally, I said no and went and got all the information and Plugins I needed for FireFox on FireFox Central (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central.html).
I'm going to have to disagree with MAL123, IE is not safer than FireFox, I saw an actual testing of the two and IE is filled with nasties floating in pixel world just waiting to empty out into your computer like a drain. Sure FireFox isn't PERFECT, but it stops alot of things like a net, therefor letting clear things go down the drain. People catch my drift? :P Or am I being too metaphorical?
PLUS, FireFox Comes with this cute all in one Popup Blocker and searchbar thing with the Search Engine of your choice, so no more downloading browser search engines or typing in that awfully long website name to research. :D
Hope that settles doubts with FireFox. I'm a FireFox fan all the way baby! http://www.mozilla.org/images/product-firefox.png
Take care and play safe!

I downloaded spyware guard as you suggested, and then updated the protection list. The list had an update date of 1/22/04? Is this still a good program?

(http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=78484) Each product has a simple sentence of what it does, the links provided to each piece of software will give further explanations. I also advise that the basic/minimum setup is just that, very very minimal, and if you try to go everywhere and anywhere on the internet, prepare to have problems and lots of them.
You mentioned SpwareBlaster and elsewhere removing Spybot Search and Destroy. SpywareBlaster is prevention software to prevent Spyware programs installing in the first place. Spybot Search and Destroy has a small amount of prevention, though its main purpose id removal of Spyware, Malware, Adware etc…
Hope this helps…

As a victim of identity theft himself, John W. Scherer, CEO and Founder of Video Professor, is leading the fight to protect others from a similar fate.
Appearing on numerous national broadcasts, Scherer has embarked upon a one-man crusade to stop identity thieves in their tracks. By increasing general awareness and exposing the tactics used by identity thieves, Scherer hopes to encourage the public to take the necessary measures to prevent future attacks.

Just wondering in this day and age, what are considered 'safe practices'. Silly question I know, but I am on my PC (with ADSL) all day everyday and have just replaced the other puter with a brand spanking newbie and want to look after the system as much as possible. (I am using AVG, ad-aware)

Read this link, especially the post written by Blackspear.

Keep in mind that a set of security softwares is always a PERSONAL choice.
Alot has to do with your behaviour on the internet, degree of knowledge/experience, degree of paranoia, personal taste and your wallet.
If you have any further questions feel free to ask.
Watch your post for awhile other members might reply as well.
P.S.: stupid or silly questions don't exist, only answers can be stupid or silly.

Thanks ErikAlbert, my question is probably more in the context of behaviour (surfing, research etc), with a limited amount of experience or knowledge on the latest nasties out there and how they work. Hence, some current tips on the safest way to browse would be be great. Also, with ADSL, am I secure when I shut explorer or shoudl I turn off the whole system?
I am currently reading up on this site re all the comparative security software combos, and why people have what they have.
Cheers,
