An enquiry to the post in the forum of Update Alerts>MS v5windowsupdate.microsoft.com (thread closed).

I have used v4 updates for ages, and always manually downloaded criticals when i wanted. Now always redirected to v5 for automatic updates, which I dont want.

Can anyone say for certain that v4 is taken out of circulation?
Any way of getting back to it somehow, if not how to get criticals without
Automatic downloads?

Yes, I have the same questions.

V5 kept asking me to install something which I refused.

When I log on to V4 it is still there but I have got them all.

Yup .... v5 has replaced the v4 ... but you can still manually download updates ... see the link in Ron's post above.
