Hello guys, i have been refered to here by a dutch forumboard who isn't able to solve the problem i have with my history. The following occurs for a while now:
In history in IE everytime i start it My Computer is being displayed in the list, refering to all the things i have done on the puter the last time since i logged on. I can see all my files i have been to, all the emails i have read (even the ones protected with a password). When i delete this item it shows up again everytime i have worked on the puter and start IE again... this has becomming very annoying and i can't get rid of this. Does someone has a solution to this problem?
thanks,
arja.

Hi Jane,

Welcome aboard. Could you maybe give some additional info on what you already tried, so ýou won´t get any double advices (e.g. MRU Blaster) ;)

Regards,

Pieter

MRU-Blaster doesn't currently cover that item - it is part of the IE History (which you can clear through the Tools>Internet Options menu).

You cannot disable the "My Computer" logging in your IE History - but you can disable your History altogether. Go to Tools>Internet Options in IE, on the main screen, adjust the "Days to Keep pages in History" option to 0 - this will prevent it from storing that data, but will also disable IE storing any information on sites you have previously visited.

Nice to meet you all also!:)
well, about my system, it is a very simple one: windows XP pro, 320 mb mem. I have runned a virusscan, downloaded powertools from jv16 and runned the regcleaner. Got an other firewall ( i had norton, now i have zonealarm) but nothing changed.
One of you is telling me that it is due to the days I keep the history, but i also know that it wasn't there before.. It occured a week or 2 ago.. Also something odd is that I can't seem to find a tool to repair IE. Not in "software" and not in accesoires --> systeminfo.. Is this common in XP?
I hope i provided the info you need to help me out.

ps and the problem is: this piece of history shows everything that has been done on the computer and refers with paths to it. Bc, if i have run a programm, it gives me the full details ín IE, my emails are shown in IE (popmails, even the ones protected by passwords) and so on.. is this regular then? It is not that i have to hide so much, it is more that i find it very annoying. especially my emails.

It should always be kept in there - it may have just gotten wiped out by something else before.

Entirely mutual, jane :)

BTW In XP it is not possible to repair IE the "old way" through
Add/Remove Software, so that´s no fault on your system.

Pieter

Is that displaying the "my computer" part in the IE history XP related or should it be IE related? I mean on win98se i don't have that item in the history, only the other visited sites etc.. Not that i mind, but it surprised me. Wrong setting maybe?

Hmm, not just XP, Jooske.
Just checked my Win2k IE5.5 computer at work. I shows the same entry :o

Pieter,
I'm using Win2K, IE 6 SP1.
I don't have this issue. And I can't create it !!
Maybe an IE update may solve the problem !!

bill ;)

It is possible there is some setting we are overlooking...

While I have not personally ever come across a machine that did not display the "My Computer" history, I do not doubt it is possible.

I'll keep looking.

Fully updated now bill, and still that entry. Could it have something to do with the "open with" (excuse my English) instructions, because it obviously only contains files that can be opened with IE.

Same here with W2K sp3 and IE6 sp1
As for content that can only be opened with IE, mine currently shows a .txt file, but it does contain a link.

Yep, that theory can be discarded as well. I tried and mine now shoes an .exe I downloaded, a .doc and a .rtf

Pieter,
I don't have "open with my computer" in my shell extension.
Even when I choose "open with". "My computer" is NOT in there !! Everything else is, but not "my computer"
You should be able to take that out of there !!

Hope this helps !! ;)

kindest regards,
bill ;)

Bill,

Actually I meant documents in this entry should at least be of the kind that can be opened by Internet Explorer (not My Computer)

Thnx for thinking along anyway, :)

Umm why not run Systen restore since she is running Windows XP?

Yes that will work ;)

Remember this, when all seems well and you really think you would like to leave your puter this way and you be running Windows ME or XP do that system restore save point yourself. The OS only saves that last 5 successfull boots on it's own. So, if you want one say when you reformated. You must creat that one yourself to keep in case ;)

Hope this helpes.

As a very last resort ....
Go to DOS and type regscan/repair
