XMON: suspend?

We have NOD32 for Exchange (Exchange 5.5 on WinNT4sp6). We are trying to back up this server with Arcserve and, with XMON turned on, it is EXTREMELY slow. (12MB/min vs. 160+MB/min) Is there a way (command line?) to suspend/deactivate XMON during the backup period and reactivate it after the backup is done? Any other ideas? Thanks!
