how can I check the IP of the person I talk via YM?

welcome to the forum. create a p2p connection with that person, close all other programs and see the TCP connection by some program like NETSTAT.

nope, except for the occasion when that person is using a proxy. in that case we'll end up with the proxy server's IP. following my suggestion you'll always get the IP but beware of the fact that the person on the other end minght be using a proxy or a DHCP service, so no guaranty.
