Oops! I opened to your post and didn't see "up there".
I think you have good choices in your poll but too limited.
Lawrence Olivier is acknowledged to be one of the best all time actors.
I can think of several that rate very high, Tom Hanks being among them.
Robert Duvall seems to morph into the role he is playing.
There are many others to my way of thinking.

... I like Morgan Freeman (Seven, Shawshank Redemption, Lean on Me, Outbreak), Denzel Washington (Fallen, Devil in a Blue Dress, Courage under Fire, Training Day, Philadelphia). As my fav's ... some of my fav movies from them in brackets.
From your list I'd go with Tom Hanks without a doubt ... I didn't care much for his earlier days ... but he been on a roll for about the last 8yrs or so ... and can play any role ... even a one man show ... like Castaway or what ever it was called ... His good performances ( Philadelphia , Saving Private Ryan , Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Castaway, Band of Brothers) the bad ( Big, Splash, Turner & Hooch, League of Their Own)
Best single career performance - Edward Norton (The Score)

I've seen a lot of old movies, but I do not remember him. As for Weiss, I never watch anything on commercial TV to comment.

OH god, actors, there are many *greats*.
It's like asking who was the best boxer, tyson, ali, robinson, etc. etc.
But I am surprised no one has mentioned:
SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS.. I love that guy. ~....., do you hear it, the silence..... ~
Robert Duvall as Ron said I like a lot.
Brian Denehy
Jack Nicholson
man... I would get cramps from typing all the ones I like.
Even some of the *small bit* actors I love, as their roles are crucial to a good plot/story line and they don't get the recognition they deserve IMO.

PS: Sir Lawrence Olivier: "Is it Safe? Is it?" zzzzzZZZzz... ouchies, I felt that sitting watching. Could almost smell the enamel burning!!!

Oh! and whilst we're talking Actors......how dare Tom Hanks assume he could possibly compete with Guinness and have the nerve to attempt a re-make of a film that is a Classic in it's own right and could never, in a million years, be bettered with a re-make.......there are some Films that are 'Just are' and can never be re-made only by mis-guided Actors who are led to believe they are a 'Legend in their own Minds'.......So endeth the first lesson on Films.... ;D

Difficult comparison.
Lawrence Olivier is mainly known as a stage actor and many consider him the greatest of the 20th century.
Tom Hanks started as a "fluff" comedic actor but has since moved on to be one of the most versatile and personable movie stars in Hollywood.
My favourite Hollywood moviestar ever is Humphrey Bogart. Bogie is an icon.

Aaaahhhh Bogie. An easy choice for me! Sean Connery, Spencer Tracy, etc, etc, are also favorites. Stallone and Swartzenegger would have been great in Silent Movies.

Olivier’s performances were mesmerizing. Every line is crafted so well. I will never forget his portrayal of Hamlet. In fact, I have my TiVo record it every time it’s on. And every time I watch it, I sit fascinated at how he delivers those lines.
Hanks has matured to almost that level, but he has more range. His portrayal of Capt. John Miller in “Saving Private Ryan” to me is his best. I am not ashamed to admit that I am a blubbering idiot when he dies in the end. And isn’t that what we ask of our actors, to suspend our disbelief until the credits start?

Your right there about Tom Hanks 'Dying' in Saving Private Ryan....He 'Died' from start to finish in what must have been the most boring truncated film ever made...........to my mind, having been in somewhat the same situations, they would all appear to have a 'Gung Ho' Death-wish that no Squaddie in his right mind would have even considered.....sorry to say, the whole film had good intentions but...........?Sorry but poor old Tom only ever plays Tom. Then you get ACTORS like Alec Guinness who play myriad of roles in the same film, like 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' for example..... ;D Don't get me wrong, I love Tom, films like the 'Money Pit' etc., Brilliant...but not acting.

Place and date: Near Holtzwihr France, 26 January 1945. Entered service at: Dallas, Tex. Birth: Hunt County, near Kingston, Tex. G.O. No.. 65, 9 August 1945. Citation 2d Lt. Murphy commanded Company B, which was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry. 2d Lt. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to prepared positions in a woods, while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him, to his right, 1 of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. 2d Lt. Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, 2d Lt. Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate 2d Lt. Murphy, but he continued to hold his position and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards, only to be mowed down by his fire. He received a leg wound, but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his company, refused medical attention, and organized the company in a counterattack which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire wiped out many of the enemy; he killed or wounded about 50. 2d Lt. Murphy's indomitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his company from possible encirclement and destruction, and enabled it to hold the woods which had been the enemy's objective." }-

Errr!...Steady on guys....I think we where talking films and Actors here...what's Audie Murphy got to do with it?....granted he was the most decorated Soldier and well deserved to be but at the end of the day he did what he had to do, desperate times need desperate action, after his Company fell back Audie became pinned down and couldn't have moved from his position even if he wanted to, that's a life and Death situation and you either die or become a hero, my only point being that his Company didn't jump up and come charging to his rescue just so they might all be shot to bits did they?. Lets not get serious here Friends, remember, ALL films are made with 'Poetic Licence'.

What about DeNiro, Hoffman, Pacino?
It's hard for me to tell about actors a long time ago, they were really limited by the times and the writing. I really like Michael Caine, too. He cracked me up when he finally won the Academy Awards, he said, "If I knew I could have won for such a lousy movie, I would've done it a long time ago." :o Or something like that, Sean Penn is good, but, he is so hard to like! Maybe you aren't supposed to! I do love character actors, they just go along in the back ground for decades and you always remember them, even if you don't recall their names! What about Henry Fonda, or Jimmy Stewart, Gene Hackman?
Will Smith is really growing up and into his roles, he was amazing in "Ali".
Tassie's right, there are tooo many, and some times the good ones con't try hard enough - and the one's you never suspect- suprise the heck out of you! Actresses, too. (Actresses, not pin-ups, guys!)
