One nomination per user, please. Vote for something that will work well for most PC users, right out of the box. Keep in mind that the AV should run well with W98, W2K, and WXP. I'm going to set the lower limit of the CPU to 500MHz with 256MB of physical memory.

Remember, the key words are WELL-ROUNDED ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM.

TIA for your participation,
F.

Nod32 on 500 PC's over the past 2 years, and we have installed all but a handfull, very impressed with it...

I am a reseller, however, if it came down to profit margin being my motivation then I'd be selling Norton, I'll stick with Quality over Quantity...

Cheers ;D

Actually, the quality of the antivirus product is more important than the quantity of the antivirus. It is quality vs quantity, its the quality that counts, not the quantity.

This is what I said "I will stick with Quality (Nod32), over Quantity (Norton)".

Cheers ;D

Well rounded? How about KAV - in tests, it seems to detect just about everything pretty well...

As for the one I've had experience with, I think I'll go for NOD, because it can detect all kinds of crap with AH.

I'd say KAV or F-Prot/Command. More likely F-Prot because of your specs. NOD32 is a good AV with awesome potential, but I don't think well-rounded is the way to describe it.

Bitdefender may also be something to look into, resource usage is medium, it updates daily and in my previous experience it detected everything thrown at it.

Edit- sorry didn't see that you said 1 nomination per user...F-prot

I think Kav 3.5 is still available from the swiss site, this version runs very well on low spec PC's

I would recommend NOD32. Small footprint and CPU usage plus good detection.

Example with the Win32/Bagle.AH virus.

I received a Win32/Bagle.AH infected file by e-mail before the NOD32 - v.1.817 (20040719) definition update and before a number of other AVs had updated their definitions to detect it.

NOD detected it at that time using AH as probably unknown NewHeur_PE virus.

With the 1.817 update NOD detects it as Win32/Bagle.AH

At that time I sent the file to: http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Some of those scan engines aren't current. I wouldn't use that service as a comparative on-demand AV test between vendors.

I've used Norton for years. It used to be a 'well-rounded' product, however I've changed my opinion since I've seen it get smacked-down (read: service disabled) many times in recent months by different worms and trojans. It's simply too easy to disable Norton.

I installed McAfee v8 last night and was suprised to see it caught a downloader-iq trojan. But I didn't like the fact it used an ActiveX applet for the auto-update service, so I have to keep that enabled unless I download updates manually.

I installed Kaspersky trial v5 on my other computer last week (again replacing Norton) and it found a trojan right away. But it couldn't read the quarantined items in Spybot v1.2 (not that I want it to do so, it's just that the prompts were irritating).

It is hard to choose one for all those OSes. NOD32 works great on 98SE and is low in resource use and likes Windows 98. I'm not sure I think it is the best for a new box with XP and lots of RAM but you just asked for one.

What about Trend Micro's AV? You don't see much written about it. I don't use it, just asking.

If you want to buy an AV, I recommend NOD32...

If you want a free AV, I recommend avast! Home Edition...

Running it right now while waiting on NOD32 beta. Very nice and excellent detection I must say. Cleaned what KAV 5 suppposedly removed *puppy*

f123:

Please, keep in mind that NOD32 IS NOT GOOD AT TROJAN DETECTION If you use NOD32 then you would have to use another utility to remove trojans, that's a downside of NOD32

For me KAV 5.0 all the way :P

The point was that NOD already detected that new Bagle variant using AH before a lot of AVs got their definitions out. That is one of the reason I prefer NOD.

That's a poll, not a performance test. People like AVG because it's free and it does its job, not because it is an outstanding AV.

Also, to give you an idea of how accurate those peoples' opinions are, precisely zero of them voted for the (quite excellent) F-Prot, and over 500 voted for the resource-sucking pig known as Norton...

I have been using AVAST Home edition for a few months now. So far so good.

Like I said earlier, resource hog means nothing to me any more, it did a month ago when I was using a five year old system. If it takes a resourse hog to go for 5 years with a perfect record at Virus Bulletin then so be it.

I think it's great that other people use other AV, variety is wonderful, I don't care to convert one person to Norton, my ego just isn't into it, there are simply too many excellent products out there now and I recommend many other AV to people DEPENDING UPON THEIR NEEDS AND SYSTEMS. However, it's one thing to have an opinion and another to try to make others feel guilty for using the AV that they choose to. In my opinion there are too many people who feel because an AV is best for them, EVERYONE should be using the same thing. They probably also know what kind of car we should all be driving or what we should all be eating.

Ladies and gents,

Please lay back for a while - there's no need for anyone to leave. Just take it easy, and all will be fine ;)

Acadia, please check your IM over here ;)

NOD-32 if you just want to plug&play, although as already discussed, I'd combine that with an anti-trojan (TDS-3 is my choice as it is also among the best in anti-trojan suites).

If you just want one, KAV 5 should be at the top of your list, but you really need to configure it yourself, to make it run ok on older machines without being on the slow side (IMHO!).

It also makes life a little more difficult for the malware writers, just think how easy it would be for them to get round your defences if everybody used the same AV with the same weaknesses(they all have some!)
