Thanks Paul. I'm going to try disabling some more services. I've been using BlackVipers setup scheme, but it does not cover 135, 445, and 1026 the way this article did.
If you don't see me for a couple of days, that means I'm rebuilding my computer from the OS up and I'll be cussing you the whole time. ;D

OK! I killed 445.
I'm a little leary about killing 135 and 1026 as they have to do with COM. I am on a small lan and have long since done away with NetBios over TCP and am using NetBeui
This is Win 2k SP3. Does anybody know if I can get away with killing ports 135 and 1026?
I have heard if you do away with 135, you may not be able to boot. That would be a bummer. ;D

On my XP system, I did away with 445 a while back and left only 135 (plus svchost and System itself listening above 1024) and was very happy with that. I've stayed away from stopping 135, as I don't know what other software applications may need to query it (epmap) to find out the ports of those 2 other processes listening high.

If you try it, I'd be interested in your results. ;)
