View Full Version : SpywareBlaster 3.2 released!

SpywareBlaster 3.2 has been released!
New in this version:
-Firefox 0.9 support
-Various important changes and bug fixes
This 3.2 release provides bug fixes and enhanced performance.
The Mozilla/Firefox protection should now correctly detect profiles for Mozilla 1.7 & Firefox 0.9 and up.
NEW UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER 3.x
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.
SpywareBlaster 3.2 now offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution. Just set it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and enable the newest protection (other options are available).
As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, bandwidth costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates function remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.
Download the latest version here: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Enjoy! ;D

P.S. If you have any problems please don't hesitate to post.

Hi Javacool
Please bear with me on this one as I am new.
Could you tell how to install SpywareBlaster 3.2 please? Or direct me to an appropriate installation manual please.
I have recently installed Webroot Spysweeper (free version) to get rid of those CWS nasties and switched from IE6 to Firefox 0.9 (I have not upgrade to 0.91 yet)
So my question is do I have to uninstall Websroot Spysweeper (free ver) if I want to install/use SpywareBlaster 3.2?
Thank you for your advice.
Chew :)
P/s: please please please ...
This my system.
1) OS is Windows XP Home Ed (fully patched) but without SP. (it crashed the last time i wanted to upgrade to SP1).
2) AV is McAffee latest edition and up to the seconds update.
3) Browser is Mozilla Firefox 0.9.
4) Anti-Spyware/adware etc., is the free version of Webroot Spysweeper.
5) IE activated to High Security and XP firewall enable.

I just uninstalled Spywareblaster 3.0 and installed 3.2. After the trouble I had with version 3.1 I was a little leary but I didn't have to worry. Javacool did a great job fixing the bugs in 3.1. The istallation went very smoothly and was uneventful.

Nice job, Javacool! Everything worked from the start ... with one 'minor' problem: I had to switch from Firefox 0.8 to Firefox 0.91 before I really wanted to. For the best, I suppose, but support for the earlier version would've been nice.

Thanks, JC -- done with your usual inimitable flair, too, I see. We went from "Sorry I don't know when" to "Announcing ..." with no intermediate steps. Guess I've spent too much time over at avast, where "Hopefully next week" is more typical. ;)
And thanks for one non-change -- specifically, thanks for leaving the interface essentially unchanged, so we're not looking at a total stanger like we did a version or two back.
Best,
Mike

Since release dates rely on so many factors, I try not to release any predictions. ;) (That could change - but that's generally been my policy.)

Did version 3.1 take a long time to load?
This sounds like the result of an extremely large registry.dat, something that Netscape has been known to create on certain systems.
Can you please search your computer for "registry.dat" (without the quotes) - there should be one in an "Application Data/Mozilla" folder under your user profile. Then, check the size. If it's a few MB or more, you are probably experiencing that issue.
That said, I'd also recommend you take a look at either Mozilla or Firefox (both at http://www.mozilla.org) to replace Netscape 7.1 - Netscape is actually based off of Mozilla, but the newest Mozilla runs much better/faster.

I downloaded last night and everyting works fine except I am getting a conflict on the version between the setup.exe and the swb.exe. 3.20 versus 3.02. The main window has 3.2 on it so I figure it is alright but was just wondering why the difference.

Which version of Windows are you running on? XP? 2000? 98?
That error, I think it could be caused by fragmentation. You could try defragmenting your hard drive first then download spywareblaster.

Hi nadirah, I did as you suggested and defragmented before re-downloading version 3.2, but still no luck. I was able to download, install and run version 3.1 again from one of the alternative sites and thought I'd at least have that running, but when I checked for protection upates, it directed me to the 3.2 download again (which again would not work) so I'm back to square one!

JC: Did version 3.1 take a long time to load?
No, it didn't. The mozilla/firefox protection did take a few seconds longer to load than the others.
JC: This sounds like the result of an extremely large registry.dat, something that Netscape has been known to create on certain systems.
Can you please search your computer for "registry.dat" (without the quotes) - there should be one in an "Application Data/Mozilla" folder under your user profile. Then, check the size. If it's a few MB or more, you are probably experiencing that issue.
It's over 23 MB :-).
JC: That said, I'd also recommend you take a look at either Mozilla or Firefox (both at http://www.mozilla.org) to replace Netscape 7.1 - Netscape is actually based off of Mozilla, but the newest Mozilla runs much better/faster.
I'll switch to Mozilla eventually, but I'm not ready yet. Which will give me the best protection in my situation, 3.1 or 3.2?
Thanks,

Well that would be the problem then - it certainly sounds like Netscape has corrupted that file in some way.
If you try renaming that file, Netscape should create a new one that is a few KB in size. (You may have to reconfigure Netscape - however your profile directory should stay, so you can copy the contents to the new directory it creates).

SpywareBlaster 3.1 probably won't give you completely protection, considering that huge registry.dat file (it should be around a few KB, not 23 MB) could cause some problems.
If you delete it and start fresh, SpywareBlaster 3.2 will be able to protect you - however, again, you may lose your profile settings (see steps above).
That particular bug in Netscape is one of the reasons I'll continue to push you to try Mozilla instead. ;)

I have just downloaded SB 3.2 (did have 3.1). All seems well but I have just one query... after downloading and during setup, I got a message - something like WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 is a read only file - then there were the options; one to alter the file, to skip or to abort. I chose skip and carried on with the installation.
Was this the right thing to do? What does that all mean?
Any help appreciated in answering this query.

Re my last posting - I have answered my own question. I noticed the MajorGeeks download site says it is suitable for WinAll so I installed over my 3.1 version (after removing protection and then reactivating) as I always have done with your new versions and all is fine on my Win95 OS. I notice that the 3.2 version shows 3022 items as at 7/7/04 whereas the last June update also showed 3022 items (I thought). Have we actually had an update with the items?

Hi,
I have just updated from Ver3.10 to Ver3.20 on two Win98SE PC's. One of them went fine but the other gives the following error on running Spywareblaster. This was after uninstalling the older one and installing the newer version. I uninstalled Ver3.20 and reinstalled Ver3.10 and it ran fine with no such errors.
This looks similar to Shas's problem I think. Although it does not seem to affect all Win98SE PC's. The main difference between the Pc's is that the one with the problem is a slower PC. They both have similar software on them although the lower powered one has less of them.
Thanks for any help.

That "liveperson" one is probably relatively harmless, a heck of a lot of places use it -- Bell Canada for one, if I remember correctly. But of course it's a nuisance if you're trying to keep cookies to bare-minimum essentials.
That looks like an Ad-Aware "item" report -- probably about all you can do is let A-A keep on removing it (or else ignore it). Or if it really bothers you, set up your browser to never accept that one.

I haven't seen an answer to the questions about Mozilla yet. I have the same problem - uninstalled v3.1 of SB, installed v3.2 and now it does not recognise Mozilla (in my case it is Mozilla 1.6 on Win98SE). I can understand about FireFox as the application directory was moved between v0.8 and v0.9 but Mozilla itself still uses the same directory AFAIK so why does SB v3.2 not detect it?
Note: I also saw a crash at one point but I restarted and did the same again and all seems ok. Odd!

Help, have read the whole thread and have not seen acknowlegement of SB 3.2 failing to "see" Firefox installed. I have Home XP SP2, SB 3.2, ZA 5.0.590.043, avast! Home 4.1.418. I am using Firefox 9.1 PLUS the new security patch.
When I opened SB it shows for Firefox "207 items have protection unenabled", I enable all protections and it then shows zero disabled, I close SB and then reopen: it shows 207 disabled again.
My firefox 9.1 was a clean install and SB 3,.2 followed SB install instructions.

Hi,
For protection to be properly enabled, please close all open Firefox windows and then start SpywareBlaster and enable protection.
Let me know if that fixes the problem.

Java,
Already tried that (. Also so there is no doubt: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040626 Firefox/0.9.1 (note I installed Firefox security patch vs the new DL which does not update the version, although just turning shell to false does same thing).

Hi,
Well that's odd.
Can you please send the following files to bugreports@javacoolsoftware.com :
-profiles.ini (Should be under <user profile>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox)
-hostperm.1 (From each profile location referenced in that profiles.ini file - they should be under <user profile>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles)
Also, could you please check those hostperm.1 files for odd permissions, such as read-only?
It sounds like it is somehow not getting proper write access to those hostperm.1 files.
Thanks,

A friend of mine is having a little trouble with her new version of SpywareBlaster.
She has it set to automatically update automatically after she installed SpywareBlaster. She has given a small donation for the Option. The last few days she's been getting a small pop up upon booting stating that a update has been installed from SpywareBlaster, yet when she checks the amount of Definitions, they are always the same? "3022". Any ideas why she's getting this pop-up??
Hank: ???
LowWaterMark
July 11th, 2004, 03:30 PM
Well, 3022 is the current number of definitions in SpywareBlaster. The update date was July 7, though technically they were released with the new program version - 3.2, and there has not been a separate update yet. :-\
Is it every boot up? Did it start just when they installed 3.2, which was just released a few days ago so it sounds like it.

Thanks for the quick reply: Yes, It just started after she Installed the new Version. She was just wondering why she was getting these pop-up notifications about new Signatures when there where none.
Edit: Yes, I do believe it is everytime see boots up.

Hi Hugomon
After getting some advice from this forum I installed the SpywareBlaster 3.2, then installed SpywareGuard 2.2 on top of what I have now, such as McAfee AV (latest), Spysweeper, ShootTheMessenger and Mozilla Firefox 0.92 Browser(I don't use extension whatsoever and I have Windows XP home ed.).
Oh ya ... SpywareBlaster 3.2 will work with Firefox 0.9.0 and above. (I switched from FF 0.9.0 to FF 0.92 within the last two weeks while SpywareBlaster 3.2 was installed there. It picked the Firefox up immediately with no problem at all for all versions.)
I also installed the same setup for my g.friend except her OS is Windows 2K. The rest remain the same.
I think you should be fine as the programme is suppose to co-exist with other AV programme(s).
They give us NO problem whatsoever.
Hope that helps.

P/s: Just read the instruction carefully before you install them. Use the official sites to download. Also please scan all downloads before installation.

Hope you don't mind, very new user here. Spyware Blaster is awesome ! However, alot of people are having a conflict with another very good program and Spyware Blaster. Just read a dozen post on how they're trying to fix the problem. Seems when they set up their restricted sites section, ( on Spyware Blaster) and then try to run XOFTSpy, Xoftspy detects the registry files for SpyBlasters restricted sites. Thinking they have found spyware, they delete the entries, (say CoolWebSearch), when what they have really done, is eliminated the protection against the spyware. They are trying to change registies entries etc, to rid themselves of the spyware. All that's nec. is to set ignore entries, otherwise they are defeating the programming and inviting in the spyware. It's amazing the number of post i've seen by people who believe this is a new worm, regenerating itself after it's been deleted.

Xoftspy is not the only software that simply scans for the existence of a domain name in the IE sites list, without checking the value (ie. meaning that the sites are actually in the restricted zone, not the trusted zone) and then removes it/them. Those products really need to check the values otherwise, as you say, they are weakening people's protection, not improve it. Of course SpywareBlaster is not the only product to add restricted sites. Many others do as well and of course those can be targetted and removed just as easily.

Glad to hear it was a false positive. It's a machine on a LAN; I'm new here and not sure about how things are set up. I did manage to find out McAfee wasn't updating the defs automatically (it is NOW!) - and now SWBlaster will install BUT won't run - gives error message #1157, says MSVBM60.dll is missing? I've uninstalled, re-downloaded and re-installed; same error.

I Need some help please.
I am running
Windows 98SE Pentium III
McAfee VirusScan 4.0.1
AVG 6.0 Antivirus System
Spybot S&D Search & Destroy
Sygate Personal Firewall
I use Internet Exployer and am on a LAN system.
The two antivirus systems work ok together now that I have disabled the Mcafee VShield on start up.
I ran the immune scan on Spybot S&D and it cleaned a lot of stuff. It suggested that I get SpywareBlaster 3.2 if I wanted to control ActiveX.
I haven't had many problems with popups or viruses until recently. A popup came on and told me my system was under attack and I should run the free scan. I did the download. The only attacker it found was its own popup. So I tried to get rid of it. I installed the AVG 6.0, the Spybot S&D, and the Sygate Personal Firewall and finally got rid of the popups.
Spybot tells me I have Adaware which I have tried to get rid of and it still says I have it.
The ? Should I download SpywareBlaster 3.2?

Am running Mozilla 1.6 and had no trouble with SpywareBlaster 3.1 recognizing Mozilla. However, installed SB 3.2 and like several other posts, can not get it to recognize Mozilla. Have found several posts about fixes for recognition of Foxfire, but haven't found anything about Mozilla 1.6. Is there any workaround or procedure which will get 3.2 to recognize Mozilla?
Otherwise, SB 3.1 was a fantastic program and I would expect 3.2 to be even better...if I can get it to run with Mozilla.

hi there, I am pleased that a new version has come out but I am having the same problem as I had with the 3.1 and that is the error message, This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it. Which I have neither. I have visnetic anti virus protector which I keep update and do scans on a regular basis and I have done a thorough scan disk on my computer as well. I am running win 98se. Has anybody else had this problem? I would love to run Spyblaster again. I never had any problems with the older versions, they ran beautifully. I have Spybot and that runs alright. I have scanned for the coolwebsearch variant and do not have that either. If I can not get this problem fixed does anyone have the old version 2.6 which ran well. When the new versions came out I deleted that programme file which i am annoyed about lol.

Sorry all...once again I am new to this forum and to Spywareblaster as well. I did a search for info on updates but didn't find any. I just downloaded 3.2 version, went through all the motions then I tried to UPDATE it. I keep getting this error message. I have allowed every piece of Spywareblaster to pass through my software firewall (McAfee Personal Firewall Plus) and even threw my IP address into the DMZ on my router (Linksys) but still cannot update...it throws me the error. I even get errors on the Spyware Guard as well when trying to download updates. Is there a port I need to open up? or is the server down for updating?
Just wondering...thanks in advance.

Hi,
Apologies for not having read this whole thread ! :-[
I'm on W 98 SE, Dutch, IE 5.5 SP2.
I'm really sorry to say it, but version 3.2 gives me the same error message as 3.1 did.
I tried re-installing 2.6.1, then disabling its security-settings, then un-installing 2.6.1, then re-installing 3.2: same error...
Back to 2.6.1
I guess it won't be updated with new defs anymore....
Maybe if there is anywhere a list with new CLSIDs, we could add them manually but for me that is, at least for the moment, too much work (yep, I know about Tony's list ! ;) ).
Well, I trust that IE-SPYAD, IEClean, and other very highly tight settings will protect me... ;)
Still I would have loved to be able to continue to use SpywareBlaster.

Hi pumphy. First off, you're not going to help many people here willing to help you with problems involving cracks and other such illegal software. Secondly. SWB will not scan for or remove whatever nasties you have, it blocks spyware from installing to begin with.
If you still want SWB to work, check that your version of Firefox is high enough to meet the requirements.

I am running Windows XP, Explorer 6, McAfee 8, Zone Alarm, and am on a cable modem.
I have Spyware Blaster 3.2 setup in Scheduled Tasks to run automatically. Every time it starts, the screens goes BLACK - NO ERROR MESSAGE RECEIVED. It just continues on to begin the run.
Every time it finishes the screen goes BLACK - NO ERROR MESSAGE AGAIN. It just closes the program.
No other programs in Scheduled Tasks does this.
I have uninstalled (Add/Remove Programs) and reinstalled Spyware Blaster 3 times from different places.
It's kind of scary when your screen goes black. It's normally a sign that something is going wrong.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

I have the same problem only with Netscape 7.2
I did not find "registry.dat".
If I do find it, or if there is naother file causing the problem.
What is the fix, other than switching browsers?
Thanks.
{QUOTE-> Did version 3.1 take a long time to load?

Hello, all.....
Just dl'd SpywareBlaster today....manual update mode. Installed to Desktop, so I can easily see to remind to update.
I opened SpywareBlaster a couple of times, each time finding a green loading line opening something ( ??? )
What is this?
My understanding of SpywareBlaster was that once installed, it just attached itself to files and prevented spyware, etc, from getting in. It just sits there, and doesn't need to be turned on and off, right? And I update it now and then to stay current? Is that correct? If it is, what is loading when I open SpywareBlaster?
I run XP Home, just finished installing SP 2 (with some extra effort needed), then SpywareBlaster. I have not experienced any problems so far (one day), I just need to be sure that I'm handling SpywareBlaster correctly.
Thank you.

So, what you're seeing is normal.
The protections SpywareBlaster provides are set within the Windows registry, so the only way SpywareBlaster knows if its protections are set or not is to compare what's in its database against what's in the registry, which is done every time you open the program.
So, it sounds like it's all working fine.

Thank you, LowWaterMark. Yes, from what I saw, SpywareBlaster did appear to be installed right and running fine. From what you advised, I should open up the program regularly, both to keep it current with my settings, and to check for and dl updates?
I read the FAQs, etc, but not the stickies in the forum. Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions because I'm lazy and uninformed. :-\

{QUOTE-> Are you getting a download box at all with the option to save it to your hard drive?

No - it's http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html which is failing to load - just that gobbledygook.
I've now got a copy of v3.2 from someone else, so this isn't desperate now, though I notice further up this thread that someone else had the same problem. The sbdownload.html page is still failing to load (be delivered?) for me, though.
Does http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html open a page with links to download locations, or does it start downloading directly? If the latter, maybe it's something in our firewalls that's corrupting it.
thanks

I'm having two problems with 3.2. First is with the auto update feature as it generates a error message stating: Error connecting to update server. The server may be unavailable or there is a conflict with firewall software.
I've disabled the firewall software but am still getting the same message. I am using Windows 98 SE, IE 6 and a DSL service.
The second problem occurs when I go to access my email and IE 6 rapidly cycles back and forth between the email URL and the sites home page URL. The only way to stop this problem is to disable Spyware Blaster while I access my email. ??? ???

FAQ: Do I have to keep SpywareBlaster running for it to provide protection? (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/idx/0/005/article/)
DETAILS
SpywareBlaster does not need to remain running to provide protection.
After you enable protection for all items, you can exit the program and you
will still be protected.
But don't forget to run SpywareBlaster at least once a week to download
the latest updates and enable protection for them!

It isn't running as a service - in fact it doesn't have to run at all. SpywareBlaster makes various changes to the registry to enable its protection.
