Well, McAffee forces you to enable ActiveX, doesn't it? And Kaspersky boasts completely wacked out detection rates... I think the choice is pretty clear...

Nope, it doesn't. It is the non-enterprise edition that uses ActiveX.

Thank you. I stand corrected.
Btw, I've heard that KAV 5 might still have a few strange bugs...

Both are excellent malware detectors and both have very light footprints.
But McAfee Enterprise Edition is not sold as a home- user product. Therefore it depends on whether your company has a site license where you can use the product under the terms of the license.
I have tried the beta version of McAfee and it does not have the bloat of the recent Home versions, particularly the Security centre. It is very stable and it is a pity McAfee does not use more of the Enterprise edition in its Home product.
In the new version 8, behaviour blocking has been incoporated and a firewall; so resource/memory usage may be heavier than in v.7.

Both products would be top notch and if your company uses the product, trial both AV's and see which one suits both YOU and your SYSTEM best.

Bit more than boasting when they aren't the ones running the tests. ;)

It does have some idiosyncracies but I've had less problems with it than NOD32.

There is something funny about the way McAfee Enterprise 7.1 handles e-mail scanning. For more info: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=9082

Not sure, but how Enterprise handles mail is different from the consumer version (never used the consumer version, so don't know if that is still the case after over a year). As my use with 7.1 Enterprise has never displayed that type of behavior, it has always detected viruses when I run the retrieve mail command.

KAV 5 has been out of the beta stage for awhile now ;)
Further, bob_man, your personal observations on KAV 5 beta are not very helpful to newbies without some more detail about the reasons why you did not like the program compared to the McAfee Enterprise Edition.

i'd pick KAV over McAfee anytime. KAV has the edge in database though McAfee is not far behind. KAV has more unpackers and the database is updated very frequently. the service also is lot better than McAfee. both are superb products but KAV is better in my opinion. i'm using it and don't have any issues with it.

Interesting. For some reason, my McAfee Enterprise 7.1 just doesn't scan pop3 mails. Are you retrieving mails from pop3 servers or Exchange servers?
