Any other Opera users notice the banner doesn't display properly? The trouble is all this talk of browsers recently has made me look twice,I wouldn't have noticed a few weeks back :( Damn you all!! ;) :D

has anyone tried Phoenix ???

The Mozilla development project introduced a new, swifter Web browser, called Phoenix, to smooth over some of the speed bumps of its previous navigation tool.
The group, sponsored by AOL Time Warner-owned Netscape Communications, launched Phoenix 0.1 on Monday, improving on Mozilla 1.1, which was introduced in August to mixed reviews. The latest browser, which is based on much of the Mozilla code, includes a customizable toolbar, new design, improved bookmark manager and loads in nearly half the time of Mozilla 1.1.

"Phoenix is not your father's Mozilla browser. It's a lean and fast browser that doesn't skimp on features," according to the project page on the Mozilla development home page.

I have tested Phoenix v0.1, and it is very fast, and doesn't skimp "too much" on the features - for a bare-bones browser it is great.

However, those who have broadband connections may not notice as much difference as anyone with a dial-up connection (where the optimizations come through more visibly).

Can those on slower connections tell me if a difference is really noticeable between browsers?

Trouble is I'm on a 1 meg cable modem and I honestly cant say I notice any difference renderring pages, though with GUI differences I appreciate a small and lite browser.

So is speed noticeably different betwen, say, IE and Opera on a 56k dial up?

I'm on 56k and I use Opera and one of the reasons is because it IS faster. By how much? Hard to tell really, but it is noticible.
Opera has so many other benefits, as in security, I would use it even if it were slower.
If it were not for IE and OE, virus writers would be out of business, or at least have to work harder. ;)

I do use Opera myself, but dont notice any real speed difference, but I do admit that recently I have been using Mozilla more and more, the mail and news client is top notch, I'm hoping that Opera 7's mail/news will be some thing good, if so then Moz wil again be pushed back for emergencies.
