My husband downloaded a dialer and it ate up my system. I've been offline and struggling (with my limited knowledge of this thing) since the 12th. But, I'm back now, so beware!
Watch out for Online Party and Dream Dates.

Not wishing to sound cruel, but I hope the people who write and distribrute these filthy dialers will haemhorrage while they're having lunch, develop gangrene which will quickly go cancerous, commit serious offenses under the influence of nightmarish pain and die in *** chambers, only to be resurrected as zombies, and be slaughtered in abject and everlasting agony by Buffy, the vampire slayer. Failing that, I would hope they never get whatever's on their Christmas list. If that doesn't work, may they tread in dog poo and recognise it as family.

lol dialers are scams and if your useing a dialer its either for illigal content or you got a forced dialer that ataches itself to your computer and usealy hides 5 spots in your pc
1 start menu
2program files
3 in my docuements
4under settings control panel on the modem icon you might see a dialer hot sex ect ect
5 desktop
this is do to your internet setings and as for the dialer that killed your pc im very familiar with that one i been spam with it and theres a reason why hackers made it that way
your husband ran into matiral he should had not been looking at probly by acident a fake referal or redirected
if you look for the newby survival guide in this forum it explaines what your internet settings should be
just to make sure that this is the right hack did the dialer add 3 html files on your desk top as will and sometimes a zip file with out your permistion just poof it appeared your internet line got disconected a dialer appeard as well and your browser killed
page can not display
on reboot your computer is almost renderd useless trying to reconect to the net
hard drive crashs
then soon after your computer is perty much dead
if thats the one then your going to need a major reformat as well as clean install
and a viruse program like nortion with updated definitions to make sure its clean
reinstaling sometimes dont work its still in your computer thats why a major reformat might be the case
im a major porn surfer and threw my experince i come across fake links and referals that taken me to horriable places wher i wish i could bleach my eyes out
these bastards put there links up like collge co eds naked or collge cheer leaders gone bad ect ect
and when you click onn it you get takenn to horriable porn sites that are illigal and dowen right sick
some porn web master sick mofo
or some evill hacker sending you to a kill your computer web site
you need to secure your computer espechialy with your husband looking at adult matirial he will constantly run in to these sites.
dialers are scams thqat charge any where from 1.00 a minute to $50.00 dollars a minute to stare at a web site with normal if any content at all
that shows up on your phone bill

Thanks for sharing. I don't mind his voyeristic ways (as long as it doesn't interfere with our quality time), I just would like him to be more carefull with what he chooses. I know you can't be sure what you'll get, where, but I've noticed there is usually trouble of some computer sort, when he chooses titles with certain key words like: young, teen and college.
I have been to the newby survival guide, and I adjusted mt settings. However, if he chooses to download these things, I can't stop him.
I must say this was an intensive learning opportunity for me. I had to investigate my computers nooks and crannies to fix her. I discovered fdisk and format on my startup disk. After trial and error, I think I finally got it right. The biggest problem was tht all my files were corrupted, causing me to loose my drivers and all of the original stuff that was loaded on this old box four years ago. I'm sort of shut-in, so it was a real pain getting a driver for my modem.
Speaking of which, my win98 SE disk provided generic drivers for most of my hardware, but the disk kept 'falling asleep' during installation. I had to extract stuff afterwards and it still isn't acting right. Any advice?
I did get a copy of Ontrack's System Suite 4.0, it is really nice. What else do I need to prevent outside attack? I can't stop the old man (he pays for the AOL).
I'm thinking of starting a porn site of my own as revenge for the days and nights I had to spend toiling over this thing to fix his boo-boo, but that's what I'm here for I guess.
Thanks again!

System suite has a firewall and anti-virus. There is so much software available to stop this and that, worms and weasles. I can't figure out whether to get insecticide or a big trap (maybe some kerosine and matches). When this all started, I had Ad-aware, pc scanner, Norton Av 2002.
That's another thing, PC scanner told me that port 1025 was open. What does that mean exactly? Also, about ten of my IRQ's say they are being used by an unknown device. What does that mean? I need an end all glossary of terms and programs and all that computer stuff. I want to learn, but I get sidetracked so easily. ??? :P :-[ Thanks for any help I can get with any of this or previous query.

Hi crkit1,
About firewalls, I suggest you to ask questions at our firewalls-section.
I know that Root also has SystemSuite 4.0 on his system (I myself have only the previous version 3.0), and he really knows a lot about firewalls.
About that port:
1025: BLACKJACK - network blackjack, LISTEN - listen
I also suggest to ask about that one at the firewall section.
More in general (and please be assured that I really don't want to sound rude !): maybe the two of you have to have a little talk... But that's of course up to you.
You might for example consider to install the HOSTS file (free) from Steve Martin, maybe also with the separate file for blocking porno sites.
In case you are using Internet Explorer, I would advice you to install IE-SPYAD (free) from Eric Howes, and to follow his advice about how to set up your Internet Zone of IE.
And I also would advice you to install a good Anti-Trojan program.
But most of all (and again: I don't want to sound rude):
try to talk to your friend/husband.

crkit1, come talk with me in the firewall forum if you don't mind. I dont want to get off topic here.
We can talk about some free protection, its out there.
SystemSuites firewall is not the best, but the AV is pretty good. It actually catches everything I throw at it. :)

Hi crkit1,
I'm really very sorry to hear that about smashing the PC.
It's a sad situation.
In that case using the HOSTS file with adding that very long list of porno sites might NOT be the right choice, cause it blocks a lot of those sites....
And even the use of IE-SPYAD with the right settings for your Internet-zone in Internet Explorer as described on that site, might not be the right choice....
The use of an Anti-Trojan program, if you can afford it, might be better.
And also the use of SpyBot Search & Destroy might be a good choice.
If I understood you right, you were using NAV and are now using the Anti-Virus program that is build in SystemSuite 4.0 (that AV is PC-Cillin 2000).
If your yearly subscription of NAV is still OK, you might consider the use of both them. What I mean by this, is that you use the AV of SystemSuite running resident (that means it is running all the time), and that you use NAV for second opinion; in that case you have to stop the AV of SystemSuite temporarily and run the NAV on-demand (that means: you start NAV yourself). Don't forget, after NAV has done its job, to re-enable the AV of SystemSuite.
One big warning: never run two AV's at the same time !!!

Contrary to what you're hearing here, use of both S.Martins hosts' file, IE_SPYAD (and even AdShield) are all perfectly compatible with adult sites - to an extent.
All depends on which ones you pick (al4a.com comes to mind). While some of the pages will be blocked, there are such an incredible amount of pages to pick from that the ones that DO get blocked are only a minor annoyance, not a major stumbling block (the ones that DO get blocked NEED to be blocked for one reason or another).
Have fun!

FanJ- Everything I had before my hacking job is gone. My genius brother bought sys. suite for me and I reinstalled 98SE.
Read root's firewall stuff. That 'Howstuffworks' site is great! That is just what the doctor ordered.
Also, went back and set up protocol bindings again and internet settings etc.
I thank you for watching the thread, you and the other folks are always a big help to me, even when I am just cruising the forums. Thanks. ;D

Fun1,
You might be right.
I do use Steve Martin's HOSTS file and IE-SPYAD from Eric Howes, but I have no experience in visiting porn-sites, and I'm not planning to get that experience.
My point was that installing those app's could get crkit1 in more trouble at home, and I wanted to avoid that.

>:( Well, I got the bill! $162.00 for 31 minutes (at $4.99 per+tax) connected to live.sex...through some dialer company which the biller won't disclose. The billing company is Alyon Technologies. I emailed them and told them what happened. I also told them that there was no way that 31 minutes had elapsed before I ripped the phone line out of my computer.
They emailed me back and were very nasty. They said that their products don't carry viruses or worms and that they could prove not only connection, but also activity for 31 minutes. Then they delineated the proceedure for dispute, part of which was to check my phone bill for a call to New Jersey on the date in question.
So, I called my long distance carrier. Amazingly, there is no such call on my bill. So I emailed them back, gave them a confirmation number from the phone company and threatened to contact an attorney.
Then they emailed that their dialing product (now it's their dialer) automatically disconnects at 31 minutes and I had better be careful at whom I hurl accusations. They gave me a long lecture about parental controls and about their respectability etc. they used very poor grammar, horrible spelling and no tact or good business sense at all.
That's when I lost it. I scathed their butts! I really feel bad for the poor shlubb who opened that piece of mail.
Anyway, they want me to send an affidavit from their site, along with the original phone bill (from which I plan to cut out the codes for my account) and they will adjust my bill.
I don't want it adjusted. I want it gone! Any advice?

Sure..did they bill you through your local telephone company or was it a seperate billing direct from them.
If it is the latter..dump it and forget it.
Second..talk to your local telephone company and ask them about a block on your phone for all those KNOWN area code for these kind of scams and dialers...not only the 900 numbers ( if you are in the states) but all the rest of them.
If they are block...the dialer will not work.

Ohh you're a model? Well i'm an athlete and i am in the race cars at the circuit; which is your sign?
(hope the image comes through this time without crashing another time my system after the submit button.
OK, crashed again sending an 79kb gif, had to reboot completely so twice is enough for me here.
The image goes on with you seeing an old lady in her bikinis, a cigaret halfway her mouth and her bunny slippers on and the bald headed old man in his underpants both on their computers and both rather deformed by age. I don't remember the link but you might find it back googling for "chat humor" and neatly on my system)
Found it on another place:

lol what a mess i warnd you about dialer and on your sons bill shame on you.
if it been your phone it be ok then you can say the heck with it but since it your son bill then they got you by the balls.
thers literly thousands of really free porn sites useing a dialer is no excuse.
as some one with a porn fetish for porn i know in all this time not to use a dialer is says every time in big bold letters how much it cost per minute there is no excuse you play you pay.
thers only one trojan dialer out there and that one is from mexico the reason i know you didnt get that one is cause you bill was only a hundred something and not over a 1000 dollars.
i know almost every dialer out ther that has tryed to scam me.

I miss the exact details how it worked, but a few years ago there was lot of discussion with people not knowing they were disconnected from their normal dailer and unknowingly connected to those expensive dialers (i wonder if that is possible if not first such a switch software should be (installed?) on your shystem) and after when discovered and all the complaints it seems to be forbidden and maybe not be done in so many cases anymore (?)...
I don't think with the cable/DSL connections it would be possible at all or am i missing the technologic developments again?
I even don't remember if it happened while surfing to those sites or also from suspicious porn spam ..
The people thought after having left the site or not having visited it at all they were no longer paying the expensive connection if they knew anyway they were switched, but all the time they were on the expensive one till disconnected.
Whole dramas!
In the Netherlands the switchpoint itself is from the national phone company, but such sites can create their own dialers with their own price tags on it, so who is to blame in such cases? Sooooo lots of discussions i don't hear since.

Personally, I think a dialer hijack is one of the worst types of malware out there. The absolutely ridiculous pricing they have on them by the minute, resulting in the massive bills people can get stuck with - often without the ability to successfully fight it. >:(
When I switched over to DSL a few months back, I decide to leave my normal analog modem entirely disconnected (i.e. phone line not plugged in.) That’s a real good way to ensure that a dialer won’t work. ;) My DSL service has no variable “dial” (alternate digital connection ID, as some ISDN lines have), so that is safe. Many people I know that have dedicated modem phone lines have them set up with no long distance access service, at all, another good way to help limit the exposure, as is the blocking that Primrose mentions above.

A while ago I tested my setup against trojans etc by going to a porn site, then wandered around it to see if it was trying to install anything on my system.
As it turned out, the one thing it did try to do was to install a premium rate dialler, well camouflaged. 2 things protected me:
1. Using a dual boot - it tried to default to my C drive, which I only use once every two months or so. For those with only one O/S, make sure next time you reinstall, set your system up with two primary partitions, and put your O/S on 'D', not 'C'.
2. Tiny Trojan Trap. The dialler could only execute if I deliberately disabled TTT. FWIW, you can password protect the admin tool, so no other users of the system can disable it.
Mr.Blaze
October 19th, 2002, 08:21 PM
low water mark hit it on the nose this line is for only internet dosent allow long distance of any kind or i-900 or 1-800 dials.
as for buabs your lucky i had some nasty dialers that install even with javah and active x off i dont know how the heck they pulled that one off but they did.
you must had dealt with an old dialer cause the new ones hide in 5 difrent places at one time and they can replace the deleted one if you dont get rid of all of them on next reboot it replaces the recently deleted one.
rember a dialer is a program and like programs it can be tought to do lots of things.

:'( for pity sake! I downloaded Spybot today and then went to play with it. Didn't change anything in it, except to not start at win start up. It found 3 dialers and some other stuff. I let it destroy the dialers but left the other stuff alone. Then aol wouldn't work, ie 6disappeared from the desktop...it all started over again just like the first time. The dialer must have a destroy signal of some kind, so if you delete it it kills you a piece at a time, I deleted spybot, and reverted to an earlier state with my System Suite restorer (after cleaning registry). Explorer still wouldn't work but I reinstalled aol from a backup and here I am again. The system is unstable but I felt compeled to try and tell you all about it, since you have all been so kind and patient with me. Alittle prayer or whatever you deem fit would be helpful at this time. I keep getting an "this program has performed an illegal blah-blah and will be shut down whem Sys Suite firewall tries to load at startup too. I shut down and then it comes on the next time. what did I do with those matches and that kerosine? :-[ ??? >:( ::) smilie overdose!!!

HTAstop (4/13/01)
It's now possible for a "rogue" website to actually embed Trojans, worms and/or viruses directly into a web page. In the past, pages that offer seemingly attractive downloads which contain such malware required you to click to start any download to your computer. Now it's become automatic, using features in the Windows operating system known as scripting. These scripts can load programs without you knowing, and then they run immediately. All you have to do is visit the site, without doing anything besides viewing the page. HTAstop acts as a brickwall against these scripts, disabling them so the download doesn't occur. HTAstop protects you against one variety of script, our IEClean covers all twenty-seven.

SpyBot-Search & Destroy*
the perfect double check for Ad-aware. Covers: Aureate,CLPRS, Comet Cursors, eZula HotText, Gator, GoHip, Radiate, WebHancer, WildTangent etc.. Very useful extra features included*
SpyBot-S&D searches your harddisk for so-called spy- or adbots; little modules that are responsible for the ads many programs show. But many of these modules also transmit information about your surfing behaviour and more to the net.
If SpyBot-S&D finds such modules, it can remove them - or replace them with empty dummies in case their host won't work any more with its bot removed. In most cases, the host software still runs after removing the bot.
For a list of 'supported' bots see the feature lists below. Spybot-S&D works with an easy interface that allows updates by just replacing a file of about 1k size. Those updates come by my software mailinglist.Another feature of Spybot S&D is the removal of usage tracks, which makes it more complicated for unknown spybots to transmit useful data. The list of last visited websites, opened files, started programs, cookies, all that and more can be cleaned. Supported are the three mahjor browsers Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator and Opera.Last but not least Spybot-S&D contains some routines to find and correct invalid entries into the registry.

I think I love you MRBLAZE...You really went to a lot of trouble to help people with this. My husband wants to come and live with you so he doesn't have to worry about all that security stuff, he can just look at your sites and such! You can have him cheap! He is real handy around the house!lol not gay...knows plumbing and stuff...how about $5... just kidding. Tried to sell him to the zoo last year but they wanted a big donation..it was cheaper to have them take the children! ;) Thanks for all your help. See my profile and send us list of safe places if you will. The poor man is addicted. I could care less about it, rather see scenery or foreign places. Love to read. Thanks again. :)

Had to check the forum items here before agreeing with your proposition Root ;D
TGhere are those institutions for alcohol and drugs addicts, whcih now finally are part of health care and government attention, so some day maybe also for porn addicts?
With this growing problem over internet as a whole and spam mail it should have that attention long ago already.
Imagine how much it costs on bandwidth, economy, not to forget the health matters and keeping crime alive.
We have a saying which fits ehre as well: "better one bird in the hand then ten in the air" but i think mcdonald introduced the "getting hungry outside and dinner at home" with their drive-in and phone ordering ::)
which was not all the original meaning of it.
All that dreaming, get a live we say.
The sadness in this case of the phonebill getting in your son's name (are you sure it was not him?) while it was your husbands hobby, and you pay for it. Big HMMMMM but that's your decission of course. And maybe with some help and commenting you're abo get rid of that and with MrBlaze's amazing help prevent future occasions.
You do know of course there is in IE a possibility to block sites with special content, but i think you made already very clear what would probably be the result of doing so.
Did you know this addiction is considered cheating in circumstances?

:-[I made a mistake by being so personal here. At first, I was teed off about the damage to my system. In my reply to Mrblaze, I was just trying to cause a chuckle or two. ;D Don't want to start a gender war.
Just needed some help with the dialer problem and wanted to increase awareness/resolution of this sort of problem. I think that has been accomplished. You have all been great. ;D
:-XI won't bother you anymore until the matter is resolved and then only to let you know what happened.
Thanks to everyone for your tolerance and all your attempts to help. :)

If course! Anybody would be furious with the dialer problem, and all the trouble with reinstalling the system etc...... Glad we're all here to learn from each other and able to be of help, shoulders, etc.
Just forgot to say: the chuckles for sure you created, and so we all are able to learn some more security in a happy way.
Really keeping fingers crossed for the dialer / bill problems.

Hi crkit1,
Please, you didn't bother us. Please feel free to ask for help about those dialers or other problems! We're all here to help each other and to learn from each other. And there will be certainly no gender war tollerated.
So, what I'm trying to say:
please feel free to come back here any time, you're welcome here!!!

;) Thanks, I was a little sensitive yesterday, tired etc. Felt insecure here. Felt that maybe I was using the thread for bit*h fest behind the old-man's back. Maybe I was. Got a private message of support about that from the source. Still, made my husband read the whole thread, He said he thought (most of it) was funny. He knows me pretty well.
Anyway...finally got a printer cartridge, so I can print out Alyon's dispute doc. on PDF and send it to them. Man, they get you coming and going, $31.99. It should print gold ink!
Jooske, my son is 21 and doesn't live here anymore. He pays the phone bill because most of the work I do is gratis, so I don't have a lot of cash. I didn't take a vow of poverty or anything, I just felt there was a substantial need in the community for services such as mine and the County government isn't willing to pay for it since 9-11. You would think there would be more assistance at this time, but hey...what do I know?
Thanks for your support ;D

:'( I got a bill from Sprint on my regular phone bill. They are not my long distance carrier. :o It is for $130.00, for two calls, 7 and 8 minutes, 1 minute apart, to Cook Island. They were supposed to have been placed four days after Alyon's alleged calls were made.
I didn't get that dialer completely off my system for at least two weeks. I'm petrified to think of how many calls could have been channeled through my computer in that time.
I am getting this bill in November and this all started back in September. ::)
Just an update in the continuing saga of the porn hacker blues. Happy Wildersing! :)

<-QUOTE}
LWM,
I'm on ADSL. My 56k modem is installed as well, but not used and not plugged into the phone jack.
Are you saying that a "dialer" can't be used on ADSL ?
thanks,
bill ;)

crkit1 - I really feel for you in this. If eyespy hadn't quoted my text from above, I probably would have ranted again about just how evil I think dialers are, and also the companies that charge such an unbelievable amount of money for such short calls. (Like their real costs are anywhere near even 5% of that!!) I truly hope you get that one resolved. :)
Bill - To the best of my knowledge, digital lines that have no variable connection capability can not be used to "dial" (aka. connect) to any service other than the one that you bought it for. I don't know the capabilities of all DSL around the world, but I know mine and it can only "sync up" with my provider's redbacks (the network nodes controlling the Internet access of subscribers). There is no variable "dial" like capability to attach to other addresses.
Back a couple jobs ago, the company I was at used ISDN digital circuits as both temporary connection devices (for daily file transfers) and dial-back for leased lines. These ISDN lines had the ability to dial a digital telephone number and connect them to numerous other locations. These lines were also billed at a high per minute rate. Once, an office manager at a remote office misunderstood our instructions for the use of the ISDN lines and figured it'd be easier to just leave it connected all the time, instead of doing the connect sequence each day for the daily transfer. At the end of the month, we got a bill for almost $6,000 in charges - even though usage monitoring showed almost no data traffic. :(
I must say, I like my current DSL line much better than even having the possiblity to "dial" other "numbers". I'd hate to pay $6,000 for a little web browsing. ;)

Thanks LWM. :( Sadly, I live in Southern backwoods-trailer-only land. We don't even have city water, let alone DSL. People out here don't have cable either. Heck, some people don't even have a floor. lol ;) I love it out here though because it is quiet (except for the neighbors' Friday night crack and beer fest, followed by the Sherriffs' visit). it is quiet til Monday (when they let 'em all out to go to work). :P
;D Aside from all that, I called my phone company (as I had originally) and told them what happened, again. The lovely lady there, REMOVED THE CHARGES from my bill. DITS*! She also got permission to block all 'miscellaneous' long-distance calls. Easy for me, because I only call 2 long distance #'s anyway. She also blocked all international calls. She gave me a case # to reference in the event that any more charges come in from the time period in question. I love her. ;D Now, if I would just hear from Alyon that they are idiots and incapable of determining which people actually use their services or not, I'll be happy as pigs in .....slopp. Here's hopin'. *Dancing in the Streets ;D

Hi there
Just a small advice for everyone who read this. If that happens and you receive a huge bill from your ISP, go to the police. No need to pay for those ruthless monsters.

"Call the police"
Krusty: I tried that, they refered me to the FCC. The FCC refered me to the FTC. The FTC refered me to the BBB. That's enough alphabet for me. When it is all over and done, an attorney pal and a social worker (like myself) friend of mine and I are going to take a grassroots stabb at the whole bunch of them. Probably have to start with a website or newsletter to collect similar complaints, incidents and etc. I'll be looking for solid support from several forums' members about that time. 8)
