How about that Retief Goosen? Very nice use of the putter today. Although I have to admit I was pulling for Phil. :-* :-* :-*

Yes. Lots of wind and fast greens. Didn't look like a typical US course. Reminded me of courses you might see in the British Open.

Nerves of steel & the guts of a burglar. Made putts from everywhere but the clubhouse....something like 30 one-putts in 4 rounds played on greens that make putting on one's concrete driveway seem slow.
I've always pulled for Lefty because over the years when he was being badgered by the press about disappointments & "chokes", he was invariably affable and accommodating - no easy task when one has just seen another tournament slip away.
I think the game of golf & all golf fans were the big winners. Like Palmer needed Nickalus and Ali needed Frazier, Tiger has needed to have someone take him on. They have. Game on!
Last add: how is it that the golf gods, who are ever vigilant about rules and would never allow a player to improve his lie, suddenly decided it was OK to water that nightmarish 7th green between each group of players that came through? Sounds like "improvement" to me.... ???

I think what it boils down to is they didn't prepare the course for the tournament very well. Although to me, fair for one should be fair for all.

If you saw the 7th green @ all during the tournament (a 183-yd hole designed by Satan), you probably saw the TV diagrams they showed. It sloped away from the cup in every maddening direction possible. The green was rapidly turning to a "brown" with each passing hour and was the consistency of the carpet on a miniature golf course. Something on the order of just 20-30% of the golfers were able to land their tee shot on it & keep it there. That's just unheard of for professional golfers.
In a desperate attempt literally to save the green from being killed completely and to turn the hole into something even close to a fair test of golf skill, tournament officials allowed the greenskeepers to water it with hoses after each group had putted out. Other than normal maintenance/mowing, it's almost heresy to tamper with a course once competition has begun, especially during a round and on a U.S. Open Course. The USGA runs that tournament, and they are absolute sticklers about rules and tradition. They were faced with an almost untenable choice in this case.
I'm reminded that Craig Stadler once lost a San Diego Open because he knelt on a towel (trying to keep his slacks from getting soaked) to hit a ball from beneath a small tree. A TV viewer called in to say that his action constituted "improving his stance" - and the penalty stroke(s) assessed cost him the tournament. It just seemed to me that his actions seemed less an "improvement" than watering a green during mid-round to slow the ball down.
But, hey, golf was invented by drunken Scotsmen 500 years ago, and some things about it (including my swing) are just unexplainable! :o :o

I thought a Golf course was supposed to brown. Most of 'em are down here! ;D
And what ever you do, don't make a divot. You will break your arm.
On a lot of courses down here, you are allowed to make a little grass tee in the fairway so you can at least hit the ball without topping it.

BTW, I think a pretty fair country golfer by the name of Lee Trevino refined his game in those Texas winds. Used to win bets by playing with a taped Dr Pepper bottle. This was a local course down by Corpus. The ground was "gumbo". Mushy when wet and hard as concrete when dry.
The Pro courses down here are well taken care of. The Woodlands is VERY nice.

Ha! You know those two putts that Phil missed (on 17 I think) would normally been "gimmes" for him.
Have you ever seen the Pros just casually walk up and quickly tap in a putt that's a couple of inches from the hole? I've seen Phil do that when the ball was (it had to be) 6 inches away. And I never see them miss. Every time I try that the ball rolls way past the hole. No such thing as a gimme with my game!

That he is. His caddy's slow death from "Lou Gehrig's Disease" was very tough. Both men handled the Final Round with great dignity.

Unfortunatly that is the price you pay when a sport gets more popular and starts to draw big crowds. It starts to draw spectators from different areas that the sports are sometimes very vocal. I really think that a lot of the background noise is caused by people that are not as used to the courtesy allowed the players as in golf as compaired to the sports they are used to watching. And then again there are a lot of inconsiderate people around also.

I thought Annika played very well in the Colonial tournament in Texas last year. Barely missed the cut....much better than a whole buncha the boys. And I guarantee you that Michelle Wie (all 6' & 14 yrs of her) has got game. She lacks only some maturity - gee, I wonder why that would be? I just hope they let her have some semblance of a "normal" teenage life.
If women have the game to compete with the men, they should have every right to play on the PGA Tour. My only complaint would come if they continue to receive exemptions into tournaments. The men have to do "Q" School or qualify via the Nationwide Tour. Ladies should have to clear the same difficult hurdles. ;) ;)

But I also believe that if the men are forced to allow ladies on the Men's tour, the ladies should be forced to accept men, too. What with his shoulder injury/surgery & his far-flung business empire, Norman has little time for the game anymore. He was probably the most maddeningly blessed/cursed player of his era. More 2nd place finishes in "majors" than anyone during that time (though he did win 2 Brit Opens). Lost due to choking (remember The Masters against Faldo?) & due to opponents' shots so lucky as to defy description. Yet, through it all, he maintained an affable public demeanor. At the pathetic level of my game :( , more strokes can be saved by spending a good deal of time @ the pitching/putting green than on the practice tee. The ultimate irony in golf is that the 5' putt counts exactly the same as the 300-yd drive. Which of those is any of us more likely to make/hit ???

Sub-category: Most unusual shot witnessed in person
Once had an older gentleman (as in 80-ish) join us to fill out our 4some. Retired fella who traveled the country in his motorhome, stopping to play wherever he felt like it. I noticed he was wearing a ballcap with the number "8" printed above the bill. Didn't ask at first....
We came to a 140-yd par 3 hole that played from a very elevated tee to a green that lay beyond a pond. Behind the green were out of bounds stakes. He hit first & sailed his tee shot over the green & out of bounds. He waited as the other 3 of us each hit. He then hit his provisional ball. Sure enough, it took 2 bounces, then rolled straight into the cup....for a PAR!
As we drove down the hill in our carts toward the green, I asked him about the "8" on the cap. "Oh that....it's the number of holes-in-one that I've made."
I felt very humble.... :-\ :-\ :o

I must admit, my cynical/skeptical side kicked in immediately on the lengthy hole-in-one story. Given the set of known facts, I'd never certify it as more than a "whopper". There's no way on God's planet that the tee shot flew 300+ yds in the air, ricocheted off some yardage marker & somehow found its way into the hole 200 yds further down the fairway. A man goes to the confessional. "Forgive me father, for I have sinned."
"What is your sin, my child?" the priest asks back.
"Well," the man starts, "I used some horrible language this week and I feel absolutely terrible."
"When did you do use this awful language?" said the priest.
"I was golfing and hit an incredible drive that looked like it was going to go over 250 yards, but it struck a phone line that was hanging over the fairway and fell straight down to the ground after going only about 100 yards."
"Is that when you swore?"
"No, Father." Said the man. "After that, a squirrel ran out of the bushes and grabbed my ball in his mouth and began to run away."
"Is THAT when you swore?" asked the priest again.
"Well, no," said the man, "You see, as the squirrel was running, an eagle came down out of the sky, grabbed the squirrel in his talons and began to fly away!"
"Is THAT when you swore?" asked the amazed priest.
"No, not yet." The man replied. "As the eagle carried the squirrel away in his claws, it flew towards the green. And as it passed over a bit of forest near the green, the squirrel dropped my ball."
"Did you swear THEN?" asked the now impatient priest.
"No, because as the ball fell it struck a tree, bounced through some bushes, careened off a big rock, and rolled through a sand trap onto the green and stopped within six inches of the hole."
"You missed the %#$* putt, didn't you?" sighed the priest

Too funny. I get the impression SSG needs to spend less time on the 18th hole, and more on the 19th. ;D
Edit: I would give my 20 reasons why Sex is better than golf, but I suspect Paul would object. ;D ;) ;D ;)

There is a term for the Astros here---snakebit. They are always just a little off.
Great players, alltime winning record, etc. They just never can quite get over the hump.

The rules do matter.
Sam Snead, like any pro golfer worth his salt & reputation, was always a stickler for the Rules of Golf. Being a great storyteller, he would sometimes spin this yarn about why rules (and strict adherence to them) can be so important....
Sam was known to wager a few bucks on a round. One day he'd bet a pretty sizeable sum with a hotshot amateur player looking to beat the master & fleece his wallet. Long about the 5th hole or so, the amateur player teed up his ball about 6" or so in front of the tee markers & prepared to hit his drive.
Sam said, "Whadda ya doin' there, young fella? Teeing up in front of the tees is not allowed."
The amateur replied, "Hey, it doesn't make that much difference in a friendly game. You can do the same."
"OK," replied Sam.
After the amateur player hit his tee shot, Sam stood on the tee box for a moment with his ball & tee in hand. He then took off in full stride down the fairway. Mr. Amateur yelled, "Hey, where ya goin'?! You haven't hit yet."
Over his shoulder Sam replied, "As long as we can tee up in front of the markers, I'm gonna head down here a couple hundred yards & find a REALLY NICE SPOT."

HaHa! I remember a very similar story about why "gimme" shots should not be allowed. ;D;D
Gimme: A shot, usually on the green, but that may be anywhere on the course, that is conceded by a player’s opponent. Gimmees are usually applied to short putts that are almost certain to be holed

The laws of golf
LAW 1: No matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come. This law does not expire on the 18th hole, since it has the supernatural tendency to extend over the course of a tournament, a summer and, eventually, a lifetime.
LAW 2: Your best round of golf will be followed almost immediately by your worst round ever. The probability of the latter increases with the number of people you tell about the former.
LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water.
LAW 4: Golf balls never bounce off of trees back into play. If one does, the tree is breaking a law of the universe and should be cut down.
LAW 5: No matter what causes a golfer to muff a shot, all his playing partners must solemnly chant "You looked up," or invoke the wrath of the universe.
LAW 6: The higher a golfer's handicap, the more qualified he deems himself as an instructor.
LAW 7: Every par-three hole in the world has a secret desire to humiliate golfers. The shorter the hole, the greater its desire.
LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man.
LAW 9: Palm trees eat golf balls.
LAW 10: Sand is alive. If it isn't, how do you explain the way it works against you?
LAW 11: Golf carts always run out of juice at the farthest point from the clubhouse.
LAW 12: A golfer hitting into your group will always be bigger than anyone in your group. Likewise, a group you accidentally hit into will consist of a football player, a professional wrestler, a convicted murderer and an IRS agent -- or some similar combination.
LAW 13: All 3-woods are demon-possessed.
LAW 14: Golf balls from the same "sleeve" tend to follow one another, particularly out of bounds or into the water (See Law three).
LAW 15: A severe slice is a thing of awesome power and beauty.
LAW 16: "Nice lag" can usually be translated to "lousy putt." Similarly, "tough break" can usually be translated "way to miss an easy one, sucker."
LAW 17: The person you would most hate to lose to will always be the one who beats you.
LAW 18: The last three holes of a round will automatically adjust your score to what it really should be.
LAW 19: Golf should be given up at least twice per month.
LAW 20: All vows taken on a golf course shall be valid only until the sunset.

Fred got home from his Sunday round of golf later than normal and very tired. "Bad day at the course?" his wife asked.
"Everything was going fine," he said. "Then Harry had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee."
"Oh, that's awful!"
"You're not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag Harry."
