View Full Version : Favorite Music Performers & Music Trivia

Everyone has musical preferences and knows some music trivia. My guess is that there are folks in Wilders that can take us back as far as Bill Haley & The Comets (Rock Around The Clock), or even further, and others who know the latest sounds (that would NOT be me).

Here's one I learned a few years ago:

The mother of Michael Nesmith - yes, the guy in The Monkees - invented Liquid Paper ("white-out"). She later sold the company for millions of $$$$.

That's not exactly music trivia, but it's a start.

Hey, I heard The Beatles broke up.... :'(

Guess we should warn right everyone right from the start, this is probably gonna wind up being one of those "What was the topic again??" ones. ;)

First a little background ... I was re-organizing my monstrous MIDI collection one night, and having one of my "senior moments" where I couldn't for the life of me remember if the lovely "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was from the Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel. It did eventually come back to me, mercifully.

Next day when telling that story in one of my other groups I had a flash of inspiration -- can you imagine S&G performing with the Beatles? Both the stylings and the lyrics and the feelings were often so similar.

Add in Harry Chapin and Crosby Stills etc. to that same public "jam session", and the mind boggles. I can't imagine a single person on earth who wouldn't have killed to be able to see that show.

In a musical era dominated by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, The Who & anti-war demonstrations, the #1 song in America in 1966 was The Ballad Of The Green Berets (by Sgt Barry Sadler).

[Note: I make no political statement in that remark. It's simply fact.]

Roy Head

Roy Head has recorded songs in a variety of styles since the 60's and is most closely associated with his giant hit from 1965 Treat Her Right.

He was born in Three Rivers, Texas in 1943. By the early 60's Roy had formed his own band caled the Traits. He was a country singer but ventured into rock-and-roll. The group signed with the Scepter label in 1964, then moved on to a smaller label called Back Beat. It was here that they would have their most success on the pop charts. They recorded their song Treat Her Right and it entered the pop charts in September of 1965. Released as by Roy Head and the Traits, it reached number two both there and on the R&B charts. Although Roy Head was a white singer he had recorded a song in an R&B style, and thus became part of the mid-60's blue-eyed soul movement that also included groups such as the Righteous Brothers and the Boxtops.

Other songs which had been recorded earlier were reissued, either as by Roy himself or by Roy Head and the Traits. Two of these reached the top forty on the pop charts later in 1965, Just A Little Bit and Apple Of My Eye. Roy and his group recorded with other labels, some of which were too small to promote a record into being recognized nationally. They had three more minor hits in 1966. They reached the top 100 just once more with a minor hit in 1971 titled [The World's Going Up In A] Puff Of Smoke.

Roy Head turned his attentions to the country market in the 70's, and continued to record for a variety of record labels. The country hits began to come and Roy rode the country charts into the mid-80's. The most successful country song he released was The Most Wanted Woman In Town in 1975. Roy released a number of albums in the late 70's and early 80's, and there were some compilations issued in the 90's.

So Roy Head and the Traits had a variety of records issued on a variety of labels. They are basicly a country band that records in a rock-and-roll style, sometimes with an R&B influence. The result is a lot of varied, interesting music. Roy himself is an accomplished guitar player and the group is known for putting on a good show, sometimes along the lines of a James Brown dance revival. The big hit from the the 60's, Treat Her Right, was featured in the movie The Commitments

Jurassic Joe :D

The lyrics were inspiring!

96 Tears
? and The Mysterians

Too many teardrops for one heart to be cryin'
Too many teardrops for one heart to carry on
You're way on top now
Since you left me
You're always laughin'
Way down at me
But watch out now
I'm gonna get there
We'll be together
For just a little while
And then I'm gonna put you
Way down here
And you'll start cryin'
Ninety-six tears
Cry
Cry

And when the sun comes up
I'll be on top
You'll be way down there
Lookin' up
And I might wave
Come up here
But I don't see you
Wavin' now
I'm way down here
Wonderin' how
I'm gonna get you
But I know now
I'll just cry, cry, I'll just cry

Too many teardrops for one heart to be cryin'
Too many teardrops for one heart
To carry on
You're gonna cry ninety-six tears
You're gonna cry ninety-six tears
You're gonna cry cry, cry, cry, now
You're gonna cry cry, cry, cry
Ninety-six tears c'mon and lemme hear you cry, now
Ninety-six tears (whoo!) I wanna hear you cry
Night and day, yeah, all night long
Uh-ninety-six tears cry cry cry
C'mon baby, let me hear you cry now, all night long
Uh-ninety-six tears! Yeah! C'mon now
Uh-ninety-six tears!

Name any 4 of the 6 members of Buffalo Springfield, some of whom went on to spectacular careers in other bands, in duos & as solo artists. Springfield's recording of For What It's Worth became the defining anthem of the 60s.

This one's just a teensy bit off-topic, in the sense that it's not so much a trivia-quiz item as asking for help filling a gap in my personal memory that's driving me up the wall.

Anyone remember the name of the group (or for that matter, even heard of them) who did an oddball version of country-rock and country ballads with a strong Latin (Afro-Cuban, if you prefer) backing? Just to make it really tough, I'd be hard-pressed to come up with even a rough date (maybe mid-70's?), plus I don't think they ever did have any major hits.

Ok, and I'll throw in a fairer one too -- who was Gloria Esteban's group?
