Symantec Corp., the big provider of antivirus and security software, on Tuesday released the Norton SystemWorks 2003 suite designed to keep PCs operating at peak performance levels.
One major component of the suite, Norton AntiVirus 2003, automatically removes malicious code, protects e-mail and instant message attachments, and keeps virus definitions up to date without user intervention. The instant messaging functions support Yahoo Instant Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, and Windows Messenger. New worm-blocking technology detects Simple Mail Transfer Protocol worms such as Nimda.
New Web-specific tools include a Web Cleanup feature for removing cumbersome files. Users can decide to remove some Internet files while keeping others that might be useful, such as cookies from e-commerce sites. A new Connection Keep Alive function simulates user activity when the software senses a drop-off in activity so connections aren't broken.
Norton SystemWorks 2003 and Norton SystemWorks 2003 Professional Edition -- with additional features geared toward power users -- are available now for pre-order at Symantec's Web site or at for estimated retail prices of $69.95 and $99.95.
