Based on the title of this thread, I immediately purchased the PRO version of AVG and uninstalled NOD32.

Now my system is totally infected.

Given the choice I'd choose AVG, its more user friendly and as its so widely used you'll always find support for any questions,plus its possibly better at detection than Avast (IMHO) due to Heuristics as standard (which can throw up a few false positives) Best thing is to give it a try! :)

AntiVir PE http://www.free-av.com/index.htmis a lot more better than AVG6 but almost twice the number of false positives.

But given between Avast 32 & Antivir PE which is second best would you guys say & why?

If this is what you want to know then Antivir PE can detect more viruses then Avast32 or AVG.

Heuristics
Heuristics (from the Greek heuriskein, to discover, find) is a rule of thumb, strategy, method or trick used to improve the efficiency of a system that tries to discover the solutions to complex problems. In the context of anti-virus software, it is used to describe software which applies rules to distinguish viruses from non-viruses. Heuristic software is initially attractive for users since it is often presented as not needing updates.

Unfortunately, heuristics is not problem-free. The main problem is that the virus writing community learns the rules used by heuristic software very quickly and starts writing viruses which circumvent them. The anti-virus companies then reformulate the rules and reissue the software etc., annulling the 'no updates' argument. Heuristic software also has a propensity to 'false-alarm', i.e. to label objects as viruses when they are not. Because of this, heuristics have to be tempered effectively, in order that they are not over-sensitive and to minimise the likelihood of false-alarms.

everyone has his/her coffee as they like...

when I saw the thread title I said to myself you bet it is! I believe anything is better then Nod, <it gave me too much trouble with other programs. I think pc-cillin is better but have ditched it also as every third update or so it would stop working correctly until I manually updated. So now I do use AVG and I love it! It's simple, fast, friendly, easy, and thorough!

Generally speaking, these 2 products can't be compared... :)

In that case you'll be happy to learn that NOD32 "let 15 viruses in" while AVG "never let any in" ... according to a comment on CNet.

I truly DON'T believe that AVG is a better product than Nod. It was just an attention getter.
