Security Alert: FCC proposes mandatory Digital Rights Management

With efforts to mandate copy protection of digital TV broadcasts stalled in the United States Congress, Hollywood and the RIAA -- together with two Congressmen who are working on their behalf -- have approached the FCC (http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DOC-225218A1.pdf). Legislators Billy Tauzin and John Dingell, after failing to pass legislation in the house, have written the FCC, asking it to mandate built-in hardware copy protection in all devices that might record or receive a digital broadcast.

I will be surprised if this is actually passed.

Fair-use seems to be a touchy topic these days... although it is very debatable on how far fair-use should extend.
I see no reason why users shouldn't be able to record TV shows digitally on PVRs. However, the new "sharing" feature may have to be removed (or at least restricted to be only on a house LAN - which would still give the benefit of watching a show anywhere in the house - much like that of a VCR).
