Just received an update from the folks at Tiny:

Hello,

first of all we would like to apologize to all of you who were not answered. When we introduced Sandbox technology we did not expected such a huge response and interest from general public for this technology. We are (simply said) not staffed enough.

The introduction of Sandbox technology caused also certain problems to our firewall driver which turned to be less stable when used on certain HW/SW configurations.

We would like to announce the availability of beta release of TPF 4 which is scheduled for September 4, 2002 and you will receive separate email about it.

Since TPF 4 has completely new configuration database there won't be a bridge allowing to transfer old configurations into the new engine. The configuration of TPF 4 should be more simple and straightforward.

What to expect?
1. New User Interface
2. Arrival of SNORT based IDS (later this month)
3. Smaller size
4. Greater stability
5. Some bugs here and there...

What not to expect?
1. Content filtering - discontinued, TPF4 will OEM third party solution during fall 2002
2. Self-learning - we hope that this will not be necessary with the way the new TPF 4 is designed. There will be separate tool to selfdefine sandbox profile for given application later in fall 2002.

We hope that new TPF 4 will be more simple and straightforward to use. We are also preparing certain initiatives that will simplify and automate the sandbox building procedures.

There will be separate support system dedicated to TPF 4 - we will appreciate your feedback.

With best regards

TPF4 Team

I'm glad to see they addressed several issues especially size and stability. Generally my overall experience with TPF3 was very good and I am looking forward to trying TPF4 beta!

Hi Paul

I have no idea what the plan is as far as distribution is concerned, but I'd certainly be happy to share any info I receive.

Much obliged! I'll take it, you're going to give the new version a try? If so, looking forward to your findings ;)

Be happy to share a copy ( if it's time limited ofcourse ) if it happens you cannot find one and are interested.

Is that OK to say that here? If not sorry & edit.

We probably can - but are interested in your opinion ;)

Sharing a copy most probably isn't the way to go; it will violate the EULA. Providing a download link would do, in case you will not give it a try yourself.

Not really, no ;)

No need to apologize, nor to edit 8).

Anyone beta testing the new version 4 yet?

Sounds pretty interesting with the added Sandboxing ect. Tiny added in version 3. I was going to try 3 but i heard it was quiet difficult & there isnt very much help online for it yet unfortuntely since its so new. I dont like trying brand new released version software out either anyways because you just dont know what you might encounter.

Version 4 sounds soooooo much better. I cant wait to hear from people who start testing it.

Please dont be shy let us all know what its like now :)

I just tried Tiny for two weeks and it was the worst firewall for lockups with Windows XP of any of those I have tried..
I sure hope Tiny 4 is better..

I don't think it's out yet. I am also supposed to be on the v4.0 beta testing list. I received the same notification that was posted at the top of this thread, as well as a link to a pre-release version of 4.0 that was dated Aug 30. (Meaning, the install file name was: TPF4_300802.zip). But, a few days later, they removed that file. I assume they pulled it because of problems.

Since the beta release date was going to be Sept 4, I figured I'd just wait for that, rather than trying the Aug 30 version. I thought they'd debug some more in the few extra days. But, today is Sept 14 and still no email, post or anything about the version 4.0 beta.

I'm hoping no news is good news and that they are tightening the code before release. (FYI - I'm only interested in the sandbox portion - Tiny Trojan Trap - not the rest of the firewall. You can customize the install and not take the firewall and anti-virus, if you prefer.)

Do you know if licensees of TTT will be offered an upgrade?

I've been trying to find that out myself, since that's the license I have, and I just bought it a short time ago. I haven't heard anything yet, but, in communications with Tiny regarding issues that I had with my TTT installation, their suggestion was to download the 4.0 beta of TPF and just don't install the non-sandbox pieces.

I'm hopeful that since the product is modular enough, that this means they still intend for it to be a separate product. As for who gets the upgrade and at what cost, if any, I don't have a clue.

Thats a shame they have left you beta testers all wondering what the hell is going on. All they would have had to do is post at 1 or 2 boards online saying.. it will be another couple weeks or whatever because of xyz, we care & sorry for the wait & the word would have gotten around to everyone.

Please keep us informed & let us know when the beta does finally come out. Id be interested in hearing whats changed & how the whole process is going.

The Sandbox part interests me most also.

Thank You for the update LowWaterMark.

It sure looks like it. This is an update you may receive in email from Tiny Software if you are a current owner of TFP 3.0...

I'm not sure if a representative from Tiny Software will be posting over here or not, but they have posted over at DSLReports that the new TPF v4.0 Public Beta is available. So for now, I'll just post the link to their post here...

I've downloaded the main XP/2K version kit and I'll be trying it out shortly.

Confused: I have a licensed copy of TTT but not TPF. I'm very happy with ZAP and don't need or want another firewall. I do, however, want a great sandbox such as TTT but with a far, far superior UI, which I hope TTT 4 will be. Is there a TTT 4?

LowWaterMark

I've been asking that myself and apparently, it's not there - yet. I'm fully hopeful that they'll provide a separate TTT when they've got the product reviewed and further debugged.

You are supposed to be able to just install the TTT components from the kit when installing. They advised me to do that, so that's how I'm going to try it out. (I also only use TTT and only have a TTT license.)

I will let you know what happens when I do that. Now it's just a matter of finding the time it takes to try out something like a new version of TTT. ;)

I have a licence for tpf3 and with version 3.0.8, I can only use it installing the core components and the sand box components. If I install the firewall components I can't access the internet. So I would say that you can definitely install the TTT components separately. I use kerio beta3 for my firewall at present. GA
