The figures for Facebook actually should make us rather sad. Imho, it clearly shows a problem, rather than just being an interesting figure. A psychiatrist would sit on their own couch after looking at those stats.

Most of the children I ask really believe their Facebook "friends" are truly friends. I'm afraid to ask adults, so I don't.
I agree this is sad. What a statistic.

Did I do the math wrong? Doesn't that work out to ~8,900 YEARS? :o

Doesn't seem that bad. Aren't like... 250million people on facebook? People use Facebook as an instant messenger, they log on and leave it open in case a friend IMs them. They could easily spend a few passive hours with it in the background or talking to people as they would with pidgin or some other program.

If each person spent 1 hour on facebook that would be over 15 billion hours, right?

532 million status updates? Is that all? That's a mere 2 updates per person. Considering you've got those people/ businesses who post updates multiple times throughout the day this seems accurate.

Doesn't seem that bad to me.

Well, your post piqued my interest. So, now I have to agree as there are, purportedly, well over 800 million facebook users.

Wow, 800 million? So... yea... this is even less surprising. This means that instead of 2 facebook statuses on average you have less than 1.

Yep! The number I got was 845 million monthly active facebook users as of December 31, 2011. Further, that number is expected to exceed 1 billion sometime around August of this year.
