Ok I've got AT&T GSM and boy if you leave a major city the system is the suck in the US. That is lame though since most of the planet is using it and I like the idea of SIM cards. But oh boy even on I95 I get dropouts, here I am talking on the phone and then blah no signal and call dropped. A few feet later I got the signal back and talking again on the phone, a few miles down the road blah another signal deadzone (just for 100 or 200 yards) and then signal is on Again. I understand that GSM range is lower then TDMA or CDMA so they need about 4 times more towers then the regular TDMA OR CDMA in order to cover the same area but come on! This is crazy. Now I am in NH and most of the state is a deadzone. I went to MT.Washington Valley and the whole zone is AT&T dead. Their "If your phone works it's in your area" is a load of crap. My phone did work, it did get an GSM signal (Full strenght mind you in Conway and North Conway) but it was T-MOBILE tower and well my phone had "Emergency Calls Only" so what they said "IF YOUR PHONE WORKS ITS IN YOUR AREA" is a lie. Since if that was the truth then well my "PHONE WORKED" but IT WAS NOT IN MY AREA? (Yeah I have the National GSM PLAN).
I don't like Verizon that much since their phone selection is the suck. But I have no choice since I will have to travel between MA and NH a lot and I need a phone that actually works. I don't want to worry that if I move 20 feet from a main highway I enter a deadzone. I mean I need a phone that will allow me to use it in emergency. (and no GAIT is not the answer GAIT phones are freaking old ugly clunks of plastic). So I guess Verizon here I come....Unless anyone knows that AT&T GSM service is expending in NH.
P.S.
From what I heard AT&T/Cingular is moving south so they are selling most of NE to CDMA, i.e. VT,NH,Maine are purchased by U.S. Cellular which has an agreement with Verizon AND AT&T would have to rent the tower space which they are not planning to do. So the parts of NH which are not part of I93 are out of luck. Unless somone knows any different then well please let me know.
