hi,
when I used avast free and comodo fw/d+ there was no conflict. avast free has bb, right? but it played along with comodo's hips.
I upgraded to ais. Removed comodo fw/d+.
I'm thinking about adding spyshelter free to fill in the gap of comodo hips.
so, will spyshelter free hips and anti key-logger conflict with ais bb and its integrated anti key-logger feaure? is spyshelter needed when I've got ais?

thanks for any reply.

You have no anti-execution control with Spyshelter, which is arguably the most important function (if it can't execute it can't infect, goes the saying).

You could try:
- Online Armor with the Firewall component uninstalled (from the Options>Firewall tab)
- A dedicated anti-exec application such as the novirusthanks one discussed extensively in this sub-forum
- A virtualisation app that includes an anti-exec element (e.g. Returnil)

Or you could try a threatgate mitigation approach, e.g. Defensewall or Sandboxie, but that is a very different approach to your previous setup.

A lot of it depends on the type of user you are and your own approach to computer security.

There were two parts to the question - is it needed and will it conflict. If it's not needed then there's hardly any point addressing the conflict question :)

Come on the OP bought Avast Internet Security, don't advise buying other stuff :D

I would definitely try Spyshelter free when you feel you are missing the HIPS, it is a very complete anti-key logger with decent HIPS functionality. You can set it to auto allow signed programs to reduce pop-ups.

I have used it in many setups on x32 systems, see for example http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=1926593&postcount=4

Number 1 on my list is OA, which is free if you don't want the extra functionality (not requested by the OP) :) It fills the gap left by CIS nicely by having a very strong, low pop-up HIPS with the option of uninstalling the firewall. On 32bit installs it also has all of the anti-keylogger functionality of Spyshelter.
imo, a HIPS without an anti-exec function is not really a proper HIPS.

if you want an anti-exe you could always use windows own SRP.

When I used spyshelter with AIS I got BSOD. Spyshelter may not conflict with Avast free as some are using it. I think AIS firewall or BB conflicts with spyshelter.

Options tab>Firewall>Uninstall Firewall.....although I'm not 100% certain that this option is available in the free version. If it isn't then bang goes this free option for you.

no surprise there, with the quantity of inline hooks that SpyShelter injects in the kernel.

if i were you, i would try SS on a clean system.
then installs your security apps one by one until your computer seizes up. ;)
you'll then know exactly what SS is compatible with.

anyway,

you could try Blue Screen Viewer to check what's causing BSODs.

pretty good app to have laying around! :thumb:

here's some help if you are new to it:
