View Full Version : PC hangs when installing updates during shut down ....

Hi,

MS just released 15 (or so) new updates for my Win7 64-bit OS - 4 of these were security updates for .NET 4. Of these 2 were classified 'Important' and 2 'Recommended' .....

Now what my problem is:
If you have set your PC to DL/install updates automatically then they are normally applied when you shut down your PC. However the above mentioned updates all require 1 or 2 "Allow" from ESS 5 which you cannot give when in shut down mode. Hence everything is stuck and you have to force a shutdown (which is NOT recommended !) and take the risk of HDD inconsistencies to apply the updates in interactive mode.

The updates are
KB2539636
KB2487367
KB2468871
KB2533523

Why ESS 5 needs any kind of approval (when updates are often made when shutting down your PC) is beyond me ...

Any thoughts ??

Cheers,
StoneDog

Two of the .net updates needed/wanted to call home to Microsoft in order to continue installation. The firewall would have just blocked the communication, unless in learning/automatic mode.

Normally the updates should not phone home during shut down installation, shouldn't they?

I set the windows update to download automatically but ask for isntallation. I normally do that on shutdown.

My other PC without Eset worked fine...

It is your standard ESS "Allow"&"Deny" firewall prompt - see also http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=305314

Hi all,

same here - I posted the same a couple of days ago http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=305265.

ESET really should work over this as with Windows Update a lot of people has it set to automatic/semi-automatic where the updates are applied during shutdown and this should NOT prompt an "Allow"/"Deny" FW prompt ...

Well my experience did not go very smooth with that updates too. Same updates as mentioned in this thread, but my pc never turmed on again, it stuck on "installing updates". I could not ever opened it in safe mode, it just restarted over and over.. I used my backup image at last. Not sure what the problem is, but unless this problem does not resolve, i am staying away from the final version too.

Bump ....

@Marcos or anyone else at ESET: Any comments on this one ??

It would be a huge shame if the official released v5 would continue to exhibit issues when updating your OS ....
