I flagged 50 dollars meaning True Image Acronis as " security " software; otherwise, zero dollars.

Yes, it's security. But can be found for 0 dollars. Internet is big :P ( and there are no only super risky cracks and keygens outside )

May be. But softwares developpers must live. If nobody buys their product, the software dies. Someone remembers System safety Monitor ?

Yep.....great program for that time.......bought a license,but it didn't help much...:(

Poll jumps directly from 200 to 400 $,but where's the 300$? :D
That's probably what I've spent over time..

as far as paying for acronis, seagate and wd give a free version that verifies you have a drive of theirs. I make the cd and uninstall. then I do only cold boot images and when I have had to re install an image never had a problem with it. also when I delete a file accidentally I can restore the file.
I only use the freebies and no one seems to be hurt yet from lack of finances.

I haven't paid for any security software... ever. I either get licenses from friends or I seek out free alternatives.

Zero dollars over the past two years or so.

Using freeware versions of MBAM, Keyscrambler, Sandboxie, Comodo Time Machine, and the Plus version of WinPatrol (via the free upgrade offer in 2009) on XP Home SP-2 with IE 7.

Backup and restore via Macrium free on the Hiren's Rescue CD and Paragon 10 (Rescue CD as well-free license per the Wilder's giveaway last year).

To the best of my knowledge, my computer has been infected only once using this setup. Malware was detected and removed by MBAM.

Very often, I do download an application to try but the last actual purchase was in 2009 (Bitdefender suite).

If you mean in total then mine would be well over $400. Been using computers for years and i annually buy upgrades for certain programs plus i'm always trying out new software which has me spending even more. These days i'm a little more self controlled and only buy what i consider to be necessary. For everything else i've switched to free versions.

0$. Either freeware, giveaways, or gifts from others. I have been tempted though.

When you ask that question, I think you have to also ask as of what date. When I bought my first WIN95 computer I was a babe in the woods. I experimented with all kinds of software that I wasted money on. Fast forward 14 years and I'm lean with only a few paid apps, usually just to support the company. :)

To buy the MBAM, Sandboxie, Keriver 1-Click Restore and Shadow Defender must have been about $100 dollars.

Annually (That's only with the NIS, but are 3 PCs and Ad Muncher) should spend no more than $50 dollars.

Can't use it as external in an enclosure or a dock. Don't know about WD ones.

Too many.
But worth it IMO.

Zero dollar(or rupee as I can say), there are tons of freeware around that can compete with the paid applications and also there are many giveaways so even getting license of fully functional software is easy. And as far as helping the developers are concerned I do help them by during BETA testing. Atleast I can't pay for them but do support them as long as I don't earn;D

Between 0 and $50. I don't mind paying to support development and besides the paid versions of security software often offer features, benefits and protections not seen in the free versions.

Back in 2007 I started a similar poll, personally I spent a lot in the past, nowadays on a new machine I would buy only an imaging application.

50 dollars on Norton Internet Security 2011. I'm not using it right now, but I will install it again on the more powerful laptop that broke and is on repair atm.

Before that, can't really remember well. Probably around 50 dollars with a Norton AntiVirus box, bought in a hypermarket back in 2001; and 30 dollars with McAfee Virusscan Plus download package, bought as part of an internet provider plan back in 2004.

ESET NOD32 (3 years) 90$ + Kaspersky AV (using it now) 45$+ Outpost Firewall Pro (Lifetime) 40$+ Superantispyware (Lifetime) 20$

200$ (over 4 years)
Not bad at all.

Grand total over the years, well over $400 and proud of it ;D Currently installed $0, although I use the ShadowProtect RE disk for backups/restores, and that software I paid $80 for.

For the past 5-6 years I haven't spent anything on security software. Just recently I paid $12.50 for a year of Avira AntiVir Premium, and $20 trying iVPN for a month. And I'm soon to be throwing about $43 at Sandboxie as well. So $75.50 in the past 6 years, and all in the past 2 months.

I'll more than likely be spending $100 annually now for iVPN. Who knows about a paid AV. As of now I plan on renewing Avira. I really like it, but so many after learning Sandboxie have ditched their real-time AV's. I may just join that crowd.

You may find it hard to go without the AV.
I've been running Sandboxie all year and can't bring myself to go without.
Just saying... :)

I purchased a couple licenses of MBAM Pro when they were on sale. Would do it again if needed.

Since when? The dawn of humanity? Probably more than I will ever know. I remember ZoneAlarm for like 10 bucks back in the mid-90's. Man, it's all a blur to me now. :)

Hello,

I just paid $100+ for Ad Muncher. Other than that, I use entirely freeware (see my signature) except for:

Xfinity.Comcast.net - Norton Security Suite
http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/

It's version 5, the latest.

Since I've been using and owned pcs since before Windows and Microsoft forced their way into our homes and offices I can only guess it is a small fortune (sigh). They weren't even called PCs back then lol. You needed to have a 'no idea' or 'tons' in your poll options ;D

Hello,

I splurged on security software this month. Ad Muncher Premium that I already mentioned, and I just spent $33+ (24.95 EUR) on SpyShelter Premium. The dollar was weaker than I thought during the currency conversion.

More than I would like to admit.

Mostly because of layering and changing AV's.

I have an impressive inbox full of licence keys ::)

Over the years much, much more than $400.00. Recently very little though as SBIE and AppGaurd (that along with what comes as part of the OS are my staples now) are lifetime.

I've bought many licences I rarely/never use to support the developer or the project - sad I know but I believe where you can afford it you should reward those with the vision to try something different and/or the commitment to risk a great deal to help make the cyber world a little safer. If you always go for free stuff fine but these guys, partcularly the smaller/one man band companies need to make a living too.

Going forward, I'm thinking about buying WSA and would happily pay year on year for SBIE if required.

Cheers

The only security software I've ever paid for was Norton 2010 which cost $40.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by spending dollars (or pounds sterling in my case) as in the past I have used two AVs that were supplied by my ISP, so I suppose I was paying for them really. Then I discovered MSE. ;)

Not quite 10 years ago, I bought Norton Internet Security. It proved to be a bloated, system depleting mess that I removed shortly afterwards. Used freeware AVs for a while, which weren't as hard on my system but still dragged it down. Switched to default-deny about 6 years ago, enforced by freeware and SSM pro (which was free as a beta tester). Have never looked back.

$9.99 on an MBAM sale.

$85 - iVPN - 1 year sub.

$43 - Sandboxie - Lifetime sub.

$12.50 - Avira AntiVir Premium - 1 year sub.
---------------------------------------------------
$140.50

That $85 will turn into an annual investment if things continue as they have over the past month. And the $43 I spent on Sandboxie may stop me from having to spend any more $ on other security software. It's become the keystone of my setup :thumb:

An acquaintance was kind enough to get me the ShadowProtect as a gift :)

$0.00

FW comes with the windows, av comes free from the 'net and so do other tools and browsers (and addons).

$0

I paid for a Conseal PC Firewall license but that was over 10 years ago, and well worth the money.
