About cloud number of users

Hello.

I've been using ESET v5 RC for some time, and discovered there's a new feature, Cloud-Powered Reputation of Files. I can use it by right-click menu, and it'll display a window with Risk Level, Number of users and so on. But I have a question about the Number of Users.

In the Cloud-Powered Reputation of Files window, displays the number of users, but it only shows 1~3 person icon, I wonder how many people the person icon represents?
For example, one person icon represents 100 users?

A file used by only one person in community?

I don't know either.
I think it means only one person in community use this file.

it is a relative way to show the number of person/pc using this process.

More weird for me the time of discovery for "opera.exe". This process and browser exist since more than a month !!! And 2 years ago for "explorer.exe" that exist since w98 isnt it ???

It depends on the version of the file. If it was patched or whatever the checksum changes. It would be easy for malware writers to exploit this if it checked with the cloud based on filename alone.

ok but, we are looking in an AV so i will be very surprised if i will see an unsafe file in this list !!! ::) :dry: :wacko: IMO, this list is absolutely useless.

it would be better for Eset team to work on something else, sandboxing or..... ??

Well, this feature can help ESET reduce false positives :)
If the risk level of a file in list is a green tick, ESET won't detect it as a malware.

How is that useless?

BTW if you want to use a sanbox you could always use Sandboxie along with NOD32. Personally I am not a fan of sandboxes at all!

So what !?? it just inform us of the file version, big deal.....

It will never be unsafe files in this cloud list so what that brings us furthermore ? If our security apps dont warn us, we can believe everything is safe, dont need a cloud list to know that.

All files will go in to the cloud, safe or not.

The cloud will actually show if a file is detected as safe by Eset(a green tick), or potentially unsafe(yellow) or a risky file(red).

If a file is detected as risky by the cloud does not necessarily mean that it will be detected by Eset as a virus, while the cloud does not scan the file, but only gives you a reputation based on the number os Eset users with that exact file.

If i remember well, detection is built into the scanner, never in the cloud window

thanks, i understand more how it works but I am still not sure we need to know that to assure and increase our security

leave that task to ESET experts ;)
they know what they are doing, and hopefully they will use the current cloud information in a more efficient way than other vendors
