That's probably a beta/dev/modified version.

Final versions are listed here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpc-hc/files/

It can be a beta or a different version, I don´t know. The version included in K-Lite codecs is the one I have used for a long time and my default player.

Latest update is 1.5.3.3474 (K-Lite codecs 7.5.4). http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/KLite-Codec-Pack-Update/1094057842/4

Actually, you do not need K-Lite pack for playback, when you use MPC, unless you create videos.

Yeah, MPC-HC includes all codecs out of the box. No need for external codecs.

Been a long time VLC user but decided to try MPC-HC due to the fact they have a 64bit player, which seems to work fine on my machine. I thought not all codecs had a 64bit counterpart yet preventing 64bit players becoming mainstream (much like browsers), or are the VLC devs just slow?

I don't know really. I just know that on my HTPC-netbook, 1080p movies run fine with MPC-HC and I cannot say the same thing about VLC. VLC will give me 3 FPS on my HTPC with a 720p movie... so the difference of efficiency of the codecs used are immense between the two softwares.
